This song makes goose bumps on me. The long and short of Anna Mae's murder was Greed. The same reason Leonard Peltier is still in prison. The Wilson requiem was some of the source of greed...
Nice song, like a ballad. Have you read "The Unquiet Grave" by Steve Hendricks?
The book is a great inside look at AIM and how the FBI created dissent within the group through rumors(real?) of informers among the upper echelon of AIM.
It seems like AIM leadership began to fall apart after the group and Anna Mae were pulled over one night in Oregon(mid '75) before her murder. They were carrying a cachet of weapons back from Seattle to Pine Ridge.
Her murder has finally been convicted, And fools like Sociology know nothing these are the type who will never value our native women. AIM brass at the time were scared and seen spy's every where and ordered her killing in a blind belief of their fears. When will they stand up and be real leaders and admit their wrong doings and not be scare boys. They must face the creater one day.
Little known fact: Then tribal chairman Dick Wilson illegally sold off 1/8th of the reservation to the energy companies for uranium exploration. I think the whole thing at Jumping Bull was a cover for it. They knew AIM would be pissed and would speak out. That they'd speak out against the environmental harm it would cause and the injustice of it all.
(1) Anna Mae abandoned her two young daughters. (2) Anna Mae had an affair with a married man, her best friend, Kamook Banks husband, AIM Leader, Dennis Banks. He allowed the so-called "gun in her mouth" to happen. (3) Anna Mae made bombs to hurt someone or something. (4) Anna Mae is not a good example for any woman to follow. Anna Mae is not a "Warrior Woman". Anna Mae did not follow the example of the White Buffalo Calf Woman. Anna Mae is an example of femicide.
@S0CIOLOGY ...... 1) Anna Mae would never even think about doing such a thing to her own children! 2) This so-called affair she had with Dennis Banks was just a cover up to try and distract the real problems that were going on with AIM. 3) She never "made bombs to hurt someone or something?" There's no evidence of this. And 4) Anna Mae was and will always be the perfect role model for many Native women all over. She was the White Buffalo Calf Woman who never once committed femicide!
@MCNQ He's just shelding light on a story, chill! That song has been around for 30 years, and the world is still spining. I have woked in SD, near Martin on a rez, and the Lakota I met have always been happy that people take the time to understand and talk to them. You are welcome to your own thoughts, but it is just a song.
2009, still no answers on who killed Anna Mae. The muders of 100's during the "reign of terror " on Pine Ridge. And still Leonard Peltier is locked away by goverment deceit.
People can hijack Wikipedia and put anything they want on it, even the goverment. Why were the FBI after a cowboy boot thief when there were hundreds of unsolved murders. It was a set up.
Explain more about the set up I know that wikipedia is subject to the input of many. You can cut and paste Wikipedia text and paste to help explain your interpretation, to correct history. You can also use as many post comment boxes as you need.
one of my elders told me it was Leonard who killed Anna Mae, and her best friend. The hit was ordered by A.I.M. and here they were supposed to be protecting Native peoples and they were killing their own. Just because all the men wanted to !!!! Anna Mae and it was creating dissension among the A.I.M. members. It is fitting Leonard is serving a double life sentence. The Native Elder told me EVERYONE knew who killed her! History is never told true by anyone.
@tjlightningbolt ..... no.... the FBI wanted her dead because she exposed the truth about all the uranium mining that was illegally going on to the rest of AIM. The thing with "Leonard and her best friend wanting her dead". That's just a farce and prefabricated sham as a cover-up, that's all. Remember ... Leonard is in prison for something he did not even do and I strongly believe the whole incident at the Jumping Bull compound that day was just a cover up story for the FBI, that's all.
such a very touching song.. it is very sad , i live in SD, and and aacutally makes me feel guilty for living here on the land that was probably theirs at one time possibly!wonderful gift of singing a story and i know thru u that anna mae was obviously a veyr beautiful woman.. and i know how those cold dactoah (Dakota)winds blow! in many ways more than one!
joy harjo has a song to anna mae that's got soul from the deepest deepths... haven't been able to find it on utube. may her story live forever. thanks for posting this. jim's a true brother
My mother grew up with Anna Mae Aquash. They lived next to one another and my dad dated Anna Mae before long ago (they were friends). Anna was always nice and loving to others, and she always smiled when she met you. She is very missed here in Canada.
This song takes me back many years when I heard Jim sing it live at Shady Grove at the Oregon Country Fair. It has stayed in my heart ever since, and all these years later still brings tears to my eyes.
It was actually an AIM member who shot her, but the feds set it up saying she was an informant when everything was coming down. The wife of one of the founding members of AIM turned in the guy.
From Russel Means website.....ANNA MAE AQUASH CASE On November 3, 1999, in Denver, CO, I participated in a press conference to discuss the murder of Anna Mae Aquash. Anna Mae was a loyal memeber of the American Indian Movement (AIM), a veteran of the 1973 liberation of Wounded Knee, and a defender of all Indian people. She was brutally murdered in the winter of 1975; her body was found on the frozen plains of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on February 24, 1976.
@westthunder ..... No!! It was ACTUALLY the FBI who shot her because she spoke out against all the uranium mining that was illegally occurring on Lakota lands!! The FBI and all the bureaucrats in DC just want you to think it was AIM who did it. Many thought she was an FBI informant which was another lie. She was too loyal to AIM to do such a thing!! Anyways .... I just thought I'd mention this to you.
I heard this song live the first time. It changed the way I felt about my relationsip with the world. I started wondering how best to use this time i have. Jim Page helped me ask that question, and I have always been thankful to him for that.

The bottom started to give out after this.
