All the Navy has to do is use these kind of videos for recruitment tools. That's the big promise of the military anyway. Do whatever we tell you and you can play with our toys.
Leadership shouldn't have done a port visit to begin with.
Underway replenishment means ships can stay at sea, away from ports. The whole idea of port visits is absurd nowadays because it's grossly insecure. (Italian frogmen with simple explosive charges bagged the battleship Viribus Unitus in World War 1, the idea is not new.) It's doubly absurd in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. Modern ships can stay at sea for years if required.

You would think that with all of the military brass we have they could have anticipated the first Cole attack and put this kind of firepower on board before the attack. More military entrenched bureacracy at work. After they blew up the Marine Barracks in Beirut hundreds of dead Marines, they gave the Marines bullets for their guns too. What a shame
It had the fire power. The Navy wasn't authorized to shoot what seemed to be a everyday boat in the harbor. Things have changed though. Noone gets that close to a US Navy war ship anymore.
They had intel that terrorists were working in the area. Just like the Marine Barracks when hundreds of Marines were killed. The military leadership in the US is bureacratically impaired. They can't anticipate the simplest things. They don't want to be held liable for doing the wrong thing so they will do absolutely nothing. I have seen this for decades. The terrorists will run rings around the US military just as Narcos run rings around our Jokeland security.
I was very proud to join the USS Cole in her maiden voyage after the 2000 attack in the battle group. I was on the carrier in the battle group. I am now on a DDG and think about the Cole and those on her crew that perished everytime I go underway. I will never forget and I send a salute to her crew and to those who died serving onboard her. I am honored to serve among you!
I am sorry for your loss. The answer to your comment is more than I can put here, as I have been a critic of how the Navy does security long before we were bombed. Unfortunately, as happens more than it should, change happens when it's too late. Thanks for finding my video.
Simply, this is a newer gun crew and this is training...this is not a show off video. This just so happens to be the only time I got to tape these guys, and they've gotten better since.
For most, it seems easy...it takes a little practice for most people to get it right.
As far as I remember, I don't really have much else as far as crew served weapon shoots. I do remember someone video taping me doing some firing at a target with an M14, but who knows where that video is.
This was also about 4-5 years ago, YouTube didn't exist really, the newer crew probably would have more videos of stuff like this. Though doing a basic search, not much around to this day. Hmph.
@Urdulen All they were doing was instructing how to fire forcfully, with dispersion, or accuretly(not all at the same time) making shure the guns work, and getting the crew to get used to the different weapons for more readieness. Marine Battle Companies do this all many times a year.
That's a "person behind the gun" issue, not the gun. Don't be too concerned, this is simply a firing exercises. There are other factors that weigh into a security engagement like this, pulling the trigger isn't the most important.
Now if only they used this weaponry back in 2000, there would have been no American lives lost. The weapons are there to be used. The Iranian gunboats which tested our Navy recently should have been blown out of the water.
Some of the weapons, like the Mk44 and Block 1B did not exist for us then but I know what you're saying. I had brought it up back then...but unfortunately things were a lot more different back in those days as far as mindset and attitude. Things are tougher generally, but there's always room for improvement...a lot of room.
A lot of the newer DDGs employ ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile) instead of CIWS. The arguments between the two are vast, but a few advantages to ESSM is they don't have to be uploaded and downloaded like CIWS, can be made ready rather quickly, less mechanical stuff (which made the move to VLS before) and reduced radar cross section. As I said, however, the arguments between the two are large.
If they are able to work out whatever kinks they can with something like THEL, then it SHOULD be nice. The one thing I see with a lot of vids showing new stuff is there is also the limitation, application and bigger picture to consider. There is definitely some obstacles with THEL which I am not aware of/not going to disclose. If they get it to work and it's ready, I'm sure it'll be of great use to us.
As long as you find the job you enjoyed, you're good to go! I've been doing electronics at a grinding facility. A lot more involving than before, have had to build some new machines. It's fun, but I miss my doorkicking days. What do you do now that you're out? Happy New Years, btw.
Hey Hunsaker, yes I remember you...though I thought you were in deck...or at least at my time. Sorry if I'm wrong...fuzzy memory at the moment. But I hope you're doing well.
Yeah, I was in deck for like a year. I got a 96 on my ASVAB so I decided that the Navy wasn't making the best use of my time in such a manner. Also, I wasn't particularly fond of slaving in the hot sun all day watching people from other divisions go home. I struck OS and made 3rd and 2nd first time up, got my esws and all that. I was standing TIC when I left. Anyway, I got out in June and I'm doing great. What are you up to?
Oops...disregard above, I was going backwards and looked at 1:23...at 1:32 is what we called the Mk44, fires 7.62...a buddy of mine on his cruiser was the first time I heard of the gun...about a year before we got ours. It's cool and all, but it's heavy to setup and assemble, takes forever to load and when you're Winchester and the fight's still on, you're pretty useless. But it's still a great weapon and if all the other weapons don't attract your attention, this one is sure to do so!
I thank your dad for his service...if you're ever inside the Norfolk Naval Station, the Cole is stationed there as long as they're not underway. As well, the Memorial is inside the station, northwest side about a mile or less from the carrier side of the piers.
I thank him everyday for his 20 years of service, As long as the Cole is there for another year or 2 I will see it. Yeah Navy ships are friendly as long as your not a go-fast or a gun boat lol.
Dude, why are they trying to kill Moby Dick. It's not like he ever hurt anybody. Well, except for Captain Nemo. But he had it coming. Navy guys--why do you have your names stitched on the back of your pants? Is it on your underwear, too?
Lol...the stitching on the back of the pants...that a Navy uniform regs thing. Don't know the exact reason why, except maybe so that we can be identified from behind...I have no clue. Underwear doesn't have patches stitched on it...though we did stencil our names on it during bootcamp.
Well, CIWS fired at a refrigerator sized box and shredded it up so the crew served weapons had to do with a smoke float, which is shown right before everyone else shoots. But the starboard Mk 44 destroyed it and the final gun was the only one shooting at the water.
i think they are shooting at the box that you saw at the begining of the vid. I can't see it out in the water, but i think thats just an image quality issue
The giant refrigerator sized box you saw in the beginning of the vid was our main target. Our CIWS was the first one to have at it, and there was nothing left after that shoot. So the smoking object before the rest of the guns were fired was the smoke float we used to practice shooting.
its not a crew served. thats a mini gun weapon thats a 20mm CWIS then a 50 cal then a 7.62 minigun. the pop pop pop pop pop are m16s and 50. cal macine guns and some 7.62 machine guns. lol then thats a 20mm anti aircraft gun. lucky bastards.
No, I helped push for M16s onboard, but they never arrived until near the end of 2004. But we had M14s and for me they worked pretty well. But at least we have something a little more useful for security details in port now.
