we gone thru this time and time again with rock&roll, cinema, literature, cartoon, art, and etc. time and time again it all comes down to waste of tax payer's money. there ought to be a law where future form of art should never be brought up to supreme court.
Violent games lead violent kids. So does real guns. But you don't sell them to kids, you sell them to adults. Therefore, sell violent games to adults. And parents, do your job.
While I do support that no such ban was instated, the REASON behind the decision was not to "protect free speech" and all that other stuff. The real reason was lobbying by video game companies who stood to lose money should violent games be banned.
Fewer games means less profits. That's the reason for the decision, not to protect your rights. If there was no money to be lost, it would be quite possible that the ban would have gone through.
Hey, I say leave censorship to the parents. Seriously, they'll know... in most cases... what their kid can handle without getting frightened or misunderstanding the content. Like a movie really. So awesome job supreme court, you seem to get more good shit done than the rest of our gov combined.
Freakin sweeeet! There are already more than enough restrictions in place.Parents need to take charge, take responsibility, and monitor what their children have access to.If they're offended by something, they need to take care of it at their own level, and not try to influence everyone else's rights. The only violence that video games have noticably motivated is toward the $160 handheld console and dumbass Pokemon game, from grandma, because some tardo pre-pube couldn't find the freakin ice gym.
How long before the MPAA decides that the movie rating system is impacting its sales and decides to have it ruled unconstitutional on the grounds of free speech.
Most kids are not Father by Uncle Sam! Government should not be one who decides which things kids can not play or watch! It the parents jobs to do that!
who are the three people that would be ignorant enough to dislike this vid. i mean really they would have to have a religious hate for video game or just accidentally clicked the dislike button on their way to the thumbup >:/
... ok fine dont stop little kids from playing Violent video games... stop them from buying Mics / Headsets so that they dont destroy the eardrums of many other gamers...
onanidaily is retarded. That's not what this ruling was. This protected that medias right to produce violence. It had nothing to do with movies as a separate media. Get ur facts straight. Like movies it's ip to the parents to allow their child to view these movies games etc. Idiot
@xxSnarflesxx I may be retarded but at least I know how to respond to someone’s comment.
If you understood my comment you would have realized that the fucktards sitting on the bench had just put us on a slippery slope with regards to the laws currently in place limiting a minors access to prohibited items.
Following this ruling, the laws preventing minors from buying cigarettes, Alcohol, or viewing R or X rated movies in theatres can be challenged on the same grounds.
@Camrocks1000 What are you talking about? This was hardly a left/right ruling. I fact, one of the dissenters was Clarence Thomas, a big time conservative.
@CoolerKing37 ok youre dumb. youre right that it might have not been a left right ruling but not all conservatives have to have a conservative viewpoint this could have been a topic he didn't view positively on.
@Dragonrider1227 Same thing happened to me when I upgraded FF5, now some videos wont play, did some research and not all of these videos use the same codecs. Only solution I found is Chrome.
@Drillur nope, check it out. ESRB has no real power, they are only there to warn the consumer on what they are purchasing. anyone can buy the game. it's only store policy that limits on who is allowed to buy it. that is why they have signs and shit at gamestop saying you have to be 17 or up to purchase the game, cause it's their policy. there is no law on it
You could say the same thing about the movie and music industries, except that video games are better regulated, according to the FTC (13% of minors were able to buy M rated games, compared to 38% being allowed to buy R rated movies, 47% being allowed to buy unrated movies, and 64% being allowed to buy CDs with parental advisory labels on them).
@D0CCON ya, that's cause the people that rate the games, movies, and decide whether or not CD's should have parental advisory labels on the, have no power. the only thing preventing minors in any case from buying said material is strictly the store policy. the only thing that is illegal for a minor to buy content wise would be xxx, aka porn.
Also, I'm curious as to what was scientifically unsound about the studies linking video games with violence in children. As an educator, I'm familiar with these studies, and I've always considered their findings to be valid. So I'd love to hear the reasoning behind the opposite point of view, because I don't want to only be familiar with one side of the argument. Is there anywhere I could read in detail about the decision?
I think the other side of the argument is that parents are in charge of teaching morals. Sometimes it isnt right to buy a game for a kid a certain age, but if the government gets to decide it will be wrong and exploited for other reasons. Censorship is scary.
@idiot4aday OK, I see what you're saying. Giving the government power to restrict the sales would be too "big brother"-ish. I sort of agree, but if certain parents are OK with their kids playing violent games, the parents could go buy them for the kids. I feel like this decision mainly benefits kids who are playing these games behind their parents' backs, and I don't think that's a good thing. I definitely understand what you're saying, though.
Well your counting on the parent caring about what the kids watching. The thing is the exposure of the violence isnt as bad as the parents attitude toward certain behavior.
What I don't get is why it's illegal for children to get into R-rated movies, but not for them to purchase M-rated videogames. Inconsistencies like that confuse me. They should either both be legal or both be illegal. Anyone understand why the discrepancy?
@Bosston62 reminds me of the psn outage, where some grandpa was mad because he couldn't play COD with his EIGHT YEAR OLD GRANDSON. Some people are seriously retarded.
@Bosston62 That's a really good idea. That might indeed be taken more seriously by parents. Parents do definitely have an enormous responsibility in the department of monitoring the media that their children consume. Because I mean, I like video games as much as the next person, but I just hate seeing little kids playing games like CoD, and Mortal Kombat, and such, because they're still at such an impressionable age.
