Steve Hogarth and Steve Rothery, and very well represent the souls of the lyrical and instrumental marillion, represent, and the whole band's style and school of neo progressive milênio.eles 3 are to be congratulated, and all fans this musical style in the '90s many said they were alive and well sepultado.
That's a lovely solo from Steve Rothery! Such a criminally underrated player!! There sure were some true legends on the stage that night!! I once met Steve Hogarth after a Marillion gig. A nice guy... \m/ (:o)

Another fantastic song from a fantastic band - loved them with Fish - really love them with Steve - don't be blind - listen seriously to them and then decide if you like them. Fantastic!!!!!!
@Jacoisms Agreed. First time I saw them was with Fish, I didn't hear no Yes neither, but a better Prog-Gabrielesque version of what Genesis was doing at the time.
@MrBrakovich I can relate.... someone gave me love and wonderful friendship and my introduction to Marillion.... Amazing this song makes me emotional and I think how much the special person who shared it with me changed my life...
This song takes my spirit to places that aren't from this world. I know it reads cliche, but it's the only way I could express what I feel when I listen this song.
I think that Steve Hogarth looks here like Nirvana fan. Maybe it's because of his hair slicked down or facial expression and calm behaviour, but I don't know Nirvana and have this strange feeling. ;)
This was a Dream Theater performance in Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. For that concert they got a lot of guest musicians and played cover songs. They played a song with Barney from Napalm Death, this song and they played a instrumental song with Steve Howe. I don't know if the whole concert was ever released, but you can watch these parts on the 5 Years in a LIVEtime DVD.
I'd really love to see the whole concert. :\ You really could see how much fun they had.
oh no,they make brilliant music, believe me!Listen to songs like "Ocean Cloud" ,"This Strange Engine",or the "Brave"-album.Or see they live,it´s very special(sorry for my english,i hope, you understand):-)
This one belongs to my favourites of marillion.saw them 3 times and every gig was great. Since 13 years i´m Dream Theater fan and was so surprised and glad to find my favourite bands playing this together!!! it´s really orgasmic!!!!
The difference is that Jagger can still sing Stones' songs, but Fish can't sing any Marillion song... Anyway, I love both singers, Marillion is just amazing.
That's not entirely true. I saw him live on both the Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws anniversary tours and he did pretty damn well on many of the old tunes.
Such a beautiful solo on this, and much as I love Dream Theater and Petrucci, Rothery's playing is a triumph of feel over pyrotechnics on the guitar. But DT have always counted Marillion amongst their influences so great to see some of them playing together here. Shame Mike Portnoy forgot his shirt...
Just look at the way that Petrucci, probably the greatest axeman since Hendrix, watches every note that Rothery plays at the start of the solo. Awesome respect from one guitar genius to another, brilliant to watch.
thanks for posting this faboulous thing cocogruby... i love the guitar solo and the chant part after it.... (end of minute 3)... must check out more of the hogart-era... the song beautiful is also amazing... hope marillion do more stuff like this and that they come to switzerland :)...
I don't know anyone else but my brother who's ever heard of Marillion! He turns me on to ALL the great bands. Been listening since the early Fish days. Love these guys and this is one of my favorite guitar solos Steve plays. Tried to figure out the riff but I'm not that good.
Without FISH Marillion losted the old touch of magic....the brighty shine, the fantasy dreams, the kaleidoscopic colors...all had faded away...it's really sad!
I felt exactly the same in the beginning Fish left the band but than I gave Steve Hogarth a chance and know I think he is really good but for sure the nostalgy remains because there is only "one" Fish.
Rothery is great! Yeah really... ! But guys i have to say it, am really deceived with theo other guys playing. Theywere not really in the music... As if theywere somewhere else..
KlaVol, the other guys you are talking about are part of Dream Theater, and you're right, they're not putting the same magic as the other components of Marillion do when they play this song (Pete Trewavas, Mark Kelly and Ian Mosley missing). There's a lot of bass missing...(although BEAST636 does not seem to agree...)
Nothing missing... it's live in a club and basically off the cuff. No huge album sound, and no overdubs. Musically it's as good as anything, just different than the album. Marillion doesn't sound like the record live either. If that had been done with Dream Theater's live budget today... it'd sound way bigger.
They're consistent tho. I saw them years back in London, not long after Fish left, and this was very much the sound. Um, tho maybe Hogarth was singing with a bit more power, same inflection etc tho.
La verdad es que esta canción de Marillion (Easter) es preciosa...lástima que Myung (Dream Theater) no coge el bajo de Trewavas...y es que Trewavas es mucho Trewavas...y no se puede improvisar...es lo único que me falla en esta versión.
