The body was thrown into the river with a heavy weight, and was not pulled out until three days later (with the sheriff reporting at that time that the skull just fell apart). @justJunya If you had bothered to conduct even a modicum of serious scholarship on slavery in North America and examined the census figures you would observe that in proportion to their population that freed blacks owned more slavers per capita than whites. George Shrewsberry and James Hanscome were just two of many black South Carolina slave holders.

As early as the 1850's newspapers facetiously reported lynchings as "necktie parties" - particularly in the West, where the hanged were seldom niggers and more likely to be whites accused of a property crime (From 1882-1968, the Tuskegee Institute claimed 1,293 lynchings of whites). Nigger lynchings developed as a post-Civil War response to perceived threats to the political and social institution called "white supremacy".

What about the disruptive niggers who were hung from the yard arms of slave ships as a warning to the other jigs? I saw a woodcut of that in the Tubman Museum in Macon. They thought it dated from the late 1600's. Do you suppose that pre-dated neckties? Do you suppose all of those yard arm niggers got fair trials before they were hanged, or do you think they were lynched?

I think that's called "quality control" in today's corporate circles. Slaves were, by law, cargo, so removing undesirable goods before it tainted others had nothing to do with "fair trials" or lynching.
