@ShadyTweak In Premiere Pro, select a sequence, then go to File>>Adobe Dynamic Link>>Send to Encore. Try sending it to Encore. If Encore starts up, you're all set. If not, not sure what to do. You could try re-installing Premiere Pro, but select only the Encore installation part. Normally Encore can be launched in Windows under All Programs, Adobe, Adobe Encore.
Hi, this is a nice tutorial. I've got a question though. I want to create an autostart menu for my dvd disk with a nice background and some buttons (few short movies + maybe one exe file with video codecs) but I want it to run on my PC, not on my stationary dvd player. Is Adobe Encore apropriate software to do that or should I use something completely different?
@SentiBM You can burn a regular DVD and it will play on a PC. Or you can save using the Web option which will place the movie into an HTML document. That can be opened using a web browser on a PC. I would experiment and see what works best.

I want to create a dvd menu for my film, so after creating menu with after effects and then with encore link all the buttons, should I just import the film footage to encore and link the footage to buttons? I have edited my film by Sony Vegas. Please help!!
Do you have any tips for keeping the quality of the menu high?
The menu I've made looks great in Photoshop, but it's pixelated when I take it into Encore. I tried rasterizing the layers but no joy. Even text that I create in Encore itself is pixelated.
@joobny I assume you're rendering to DVD and watching it on a TV. You might try to make the font bigger (small text usually looks pretty gritty on TV). Or build a menu in 1280x720 or even 1920x1080 in Photoshop and use that in Encore (encore will scale to fit a regular TV). Experiment. I know that the "highlights" for menus can look pretty gritty. I have no other solution than to keep experimenting until you get the results you like.
@TVIason I'll consider it. In the meantime, at my HowNowVideo(dot)com website, there's a free Photoshop layered menu that has the proper buttons. It's on my Downloads page. You can see what's required in Photoshop for a button to be recognized by Encore as a animated button.
I am having a button problem lately. I created two button on Photoshop and when I open the menu in Encore the highlighted buttons get moved and I can't re-align them to the text. What am I doing wrong?
@alejandrodlucca That's is strange. It should update automatically. One option is to do a "Save As" from Photoshop giving it a slightly different name. Then re-import it into Encore and use that one instead of the other.
Hy! .. When I import a video to the timeline, this video is .aep was made in after effects. So when I import it the encore stops working. Any idea of whats happening with that?
@nucleotoxiico Try first exporting your After Effects timeline as an .avi then import into Encore. I don't believe Encore can take After Effects timelines that are not rendered.
@blackberry5591 If you're on a PC (not Mac) find a .psd file (gif and jpg as well) on your desktop in any folder, right-click the file and choose "Open with" and choose Photoshop thus making it the default program for those types of files. Restart Encore. That may help. I haven't seen the problem you're having before.
Hi David, Excellent tutorials from you. Thanks! So much better than the gobble-de-gook that the Adobe website offer as tutorials. You're a star. Thanks!
@toptrumpet1 Thanks. And learn tons more in my 5-hour DVD set, stuff not seen on YouTube. Learn more at HowNowVideo(dot)com. Sold over 90 copies of these so far all over the world. Works with CS5 or earlier.
@vierungogpissed You need to install it. Check a folder called "Adobe Encore CS4 Functional Content" in the "Premiere Pro Content" folder. You must install the extra library items. Also, I have the some sample menus at HowNowVideo(dot)com on my Download page.
Hey, nice video really clear and helpful. Can I ask what screen capture software you are using? Mainly because my family keep asking me for help with the basics like copy and paste and I want to be able to record it so they can keep it and keep looking over it.
@matjbush I used Camtasia. I downloaded a free, 30-day trial, at download(dot)com. There's a little learning curve. I output from Camtasia in 720 x 1280 (I started by setting my monitor to that when I recorded the screen) and then took that output into Premiere Pro for more tweaking. There are other, cheaper, versions to try. But Camtasia seems to be the best.
@iChoctate Thanks. I have a more advanced tutorial in my new 5-Hour DVD set. Check this out at HowNowVideo(dot)com. Free shipping worldwide. Only $19.95.
Is there any way to make our play buttons work as separate assets in Encore if we don't have any default/sample buttons in our library? I am just trying to make my own buttons but when ever I come to the step at 6:10, my buttons are just part of the menu, I can't move them around or anything. Can you help me out?
@DefectiveUmbrellaInc If you go to my website, HowNowVideo I have some sample menus you can download, on the Download page. In order to get a button to behave as a button in Encore, it needs to be in a Photoshop layered folder with the (+) in front of a name. That's the only way Encore will treat a graphic, or text, as a button.
@dreamtheaterpantera I drag out a rule. I'm creating an underline using the line tool. The line tool is part of the shape tools (rectangle, oval, etc.). I have more training with my 5-hour tutorial DVD set at HowNowVideo(dot)com. Good luck.
the CS4 installation i'm using did not have the bonus features added. as such, i do not have the menu templates and created my own menu from scratch. not a big deal, but my video content does not play when i take the appropriate action; e.g. press play, press the button (link), it just loads the video but it is in a "paused" state, and pressing the "remote" play button doesn't do anything. pressing stop does not take it back to the menu either but pressing the "Execute End Action" button does.
@mustions You bet. If you want more Encore training and Premiere Pro training, check out my new 5-hour personalized training DVD offer at HowNowVideo website.
Loved the video, question, after i link the individual buttons, and i have 10, with the chapter marks in my time line. After i built my standard DVD i set the overide action to return to menu, I thought that if i selected this option, when i hit stop on the clip, the video would return to the menu, It did not. What am i doing wrong? ALSO, I cannot scroll down the buttons on the menu to highlight the desired chapter from the menu. The flow chart looks like it is correct please help jb
@jonettabproductions I'm creating a DVD set of tutorials that I'll discuss some of these issues. It's tough to talk through it here. Go to HowNowVideo website and order my DVD set. I describe all this. Your button routing isn't set up correctly it sounds like. Override them and manually set the routing. Make sure each button is number in the correct sequence. Sorry I am unable to describe in words the solution. You can also try Adobe TV. They have tutorials there.
I notice that if you apply effects or really anything to the highlight besides a solid color it will not show up back in Encore. Also if you want a highlight to show up behind a button and you even layer it behind it when you use the button in Encore it is front of the button...
@Nosnibor Yes. Highlights are rudimentary in Encore (or any DVD creator). Encore seems to create a very rough edge to any highlights, so I typically just use a simple underline of one color for all my buttons.
@dteubner Thanks for the response. That is sad cause I had made a cool a highlight in photo shop then realized it was single colored and covered my button when selected...
@abci23billionmillion You can make buttons from scratch in Photoshop. Just follow the example. You can also download some menu examples at my website: HowNowVideo(dot)com
@Voteonme Yes, I have an old Photoshop. I keep waiting to update to CS4 or CS5. Then I look at the cost. Oh well, one day I'll buy the Master Collection and get everything.
I have problem on Adobe Encore CS4. Im going to burn movie to DVD. Movie file is like about 700mb, Encore shows that when encoded its like 4,9 Gb? And the video file is only 672x280 and its not HD or anything hi res stuff. So whats the matter?
hi, is there any example for Blu-Ray menu creating ? I have .mkv archive and want to burn them on BD-Disc with my own menu.. Where can i learn bluray menu creating ?
@selant07 Blu-ray is really the same as regular DVD, but when you first launch Encore, choose Blu-ray as the preset. Then, when you create a menu, make it a 720p or 1080p format. You can use Encore's menu samples, or just start with Photoshop, like I show in the video. Then import into Encore as a menu and you're off and running. I'm assuming your original video was shot in Hi-def. Good luck. If you need more help, you can try Adobe TV. They have great tutorials too.
I'm having trouble importing a video file. It imports but it comes up just as audio and no video. It's avi. file if that helps, can you give me some advice
@zap1pow2boom3 You could try to first import the AVI into Premiere Pro. Then export it out again. There might be some problem with the original AVI. If Premiere Pro can't import it, then there's obviously a problem with the file.
He(She) excuses, these masks that you use and that your you have, you create them before with photoshop? If it(he,she) is like that confirm to me thank you
Hey..When I clicked on the photoshop button on encore, it opened photoshop but it doesnt let me see any layers or anything, in other words I cant edit my menu in photoshop...any solution??
@laurap19 I've never seen that happen before. In Encore, with the menu selected, check the Layers tab to see if Encore shows layers. The layers tab is at the bottom right, next to Styles. Asssuming you do have layers, then I don't know why Photoshop fails to see them. You can ask your question at Adobe's website, under Support, Forums, Premiere.
mabey you have another layer selected or its not visible... check the new new layers and make sure you have the right one selected?...i hope i helped write back if i did?
@JACKASS11793 Its pretty much the same as this video and the more advanced one. If you still need help and he hasnt helped you yet i would be more then happy to help.
I am needing help with the part where he creates the button for encore. I also have an empty library and and creating from scratch in photoshop. When he creates the highlight there is a link or something. How do I get that?
Search Google for Adobe TV. They have many tutorials and they may cover animated backgrounds. Or search "animated encore backgrounds" on YouTube. Good luck.
I figured it out already, but thanks..You import a video as an asset, Make it a Menu, then select the menu and go to it's motion/Properties panels and link stringy thingy to the SOURCE VIDEO (Audio and Video AND put a check mark in "Animated." Why that isn't automatically assumed when you convert Video to a menu, is because adobe has no continuity in their software packages. Irritating. But if one doesn't know better, ADOBE always has been the best.
The secret to creating a link is how you name the layer in Photoshop. It must be named as I have it. Encore must see the naming conventions correctly, or else the button won't be a link. Does that answer it?
I figured out what the problem was. Thanks for the prompt reply though. I was typing "(+)" instead of (=1).
I have another question though. I'm trying to get a video playing in the background of my main menu. I had it working but then I edited that menu in photoshop and now only a still is displayed when I preview it. I can still hear sound from the video though. Do you know a way around this? Thanks!
Actually, on second thought, I just figured out this, too! I forgot to hit the "Render current motion menu" button. Now I have another problem though. There's video playing in the background but whenever i move the cursor to select "Play All" or "Chapter Selection" (the only two buttons on my menu) it makes the video in the background repeat from the beginning. Now what's wrong? Thanks in advance.
great simple introductory video for encore. Would be nice to see you could also do a tutorial on an animated menu using after effects. Once again great video.
Hi, thank you for your post. if i play my dvd on dvd player the quality is very bad on movies menu and slide show. i can see every 3 seconds horizontal lines.. i made a dvd using dvd maker and there was everything perfect. please help me. im using encore cs4
Someone help me, I'm new to encore. When I start a new project and click on the library button that every tutorial says to there are no files to use even when I click on toggle display menus
thanks for this tutorial!!! i dont have this menu-library so i just made a photoshop-file and created everything. how do i have to save this file to edit it in adobe encore???
Save the photoshop as a PSD then, while in Encore, go up to File-Import As-Menu (or Shift+Ctl+I) and import your menu. It will import as a menu that way.
I did that too, I made a 1280x720 PSD file (blank) then opened encore and dragged it in. From there, I followed this video -click the photoshop button and you can still make a button by typing in "(=1) highlight" instead of copying it from another button.
Thank you so much! :)

hi, is there any example for Blu-Ray menu creating ? I have .mkv archive and want to burn them on BD-Disc with my own menu.. Where can i learn bluray menu creating ?
selant07 1 year ago
@selant07 Blu-ray is really the same as regular DVD, but when you first launch Encore, choose Blu-ray as the preset. Then, when you create a menu, make it a 720p or 1080p format. You can use Encore's menu samples, or just start with Photoshop, like I show in the video. Then import into Encore as a menu and you're off and running. I'm assuming your original video was shot in Hi-def. Good luck. If you need more help, you can try Adobe TV. They have great tutorials too.

I'm having trouble importing a video file. It imports but it comes up just as audio and no video. It's avi. file if that helps, can you give me some advice
zap1pow2boom3 1 year ago
@zap1pow2boom3 You could try to first import the AVI into Premiere Pro. Then export it out again. There might be some problem with the original AVI. If Premiere Pro can't import it, then there's obviously a problem with the file.

Hey..When I clicked on the photoshop button on encore, it opened photoshop but it doesnt let me see any layers or anything, in other words I cant edit my menu in photoshop...any solution??
laurap19 1 year ago
@laurap19 I've never seen that happen before. In Encore, with the menu selected, check the Layers tab to see if Encore shows layers. The layers tab is at the bottom right, next to Styles. Asssuming you do have layers, then I don't know why Photoshop fails to see them. You can ask your question at Adobe's website, under Support, Forums, Premiere.
dteubner 1 year ago
mabey you have another layer selected or its not visible... check the new new layers and make sure you have the right one selected?...i hope i helped write back if i did?
thanks

I like the part where you showed how to replace everything in PS, but I need an animated Menu background...
FrankStringini 2 years ago
Search Google for Adobe TV. They have many tutorials and they may cover animated backgrounds. Or search "animated encore backgrounds" on YouTube. Good luck.
dteubner 2 years ago
I figured it out already, but thanks..You import a video as an asset, Make it a Menu, then select the menu and go to it's motion/Properties panels and link stringy thingy to the SOURCE VIDEO (Audio and Video AND put a check mark in "Animated." Why that isn't automatically assumed when you convert Video to a menu, is because adobe has no continuity in their software packages. Irritating. But if one doesn't know better, ADOBE always has been the best.
FrankStringini 2 years ago
WOW that look really hard to do
angel9719 2 years ago
How did you get the highlight layer to link to itself? It just magically happened after you created a "rule." Please explain further, I'm stuck.
AnthoKnowledgee 2 years ago
I'm using Adobe CS4
AnthoKnowledgee 2 years ago
The secret to creating a link is how you name the layer in Photoshop. It must be named as I have it. Encore must see the naming conventions correctly, or else the button won't be a link. Does that answer it?
dteubner 2 years ago
I figured out what the problem was. Thanks for the prompt reply though. I was typing "(+)" instead of (=1).
I have another question though. I'm trying to get a video playing in the background of my main menu. I had it working but then I edited that menu in photoshop and now only a still is displayed when I preview it. I can still hear sound from the video though. Do you know a way around this? Thanks!
AnthoKnowledgee 2 years ago
Actually, on second thought, I just figured out this, too! I forgot to hit the "Render current motion menu" button. Now I have another problem though. There's video playing in the background but whenever i move the cursor to select "Play All" or "Chapter Selection" (the only two buttons on my menu) it makes the video in the background repeat from the beginning. Now what's wrong? Thanks in advance.

great simple introductory video for encore. Would be nice to see you could also do a tutorial on an animated menu using after effects. Once again great video.

are you using an illegal copy ? if not they should be there, if not reinstall and make sure you select them to be installed/
africanmarty 2 years ago
nope have reinstalled and they're still not there
Nariekxyz 2 years ago
You have to tell Encore where your library is. Open Encore, click on 'Edit' -> 'Preferences' -> 'Media'
Under the top area, 'Library Content' Location, click on 'Browse' and go to the Encore library on your PC/Mac.
Hit 'Ok' and Encore will now automatically find your library assets.

Someone help me, I'm new to encore. When I start a new project and click on the library button that every tutorial says to there are no files to use even when I click on toggle display menus

hi
thanks for this tutorial!!! i dont have this menu-library so i just made a photoshop-file and created everything. how do i have to save this file to edit it in adobe encore???
Schwerter08 2 years ago
Save the photoshop as a PSD then, while in Encore, go up to File-Import As-Menu (or Shift+Ctl+I) and import your menu. It will import as a menu that way.
dteubner 2 years ago
oh, thanks.
it works
thank you very much.
Schwerter08 2 years ago
I did that too, I made a 1280x720 PSD file (blank) then opened encore and dragged it in. From there, I followed this video -click the photoshop button and you can still make a button by typing in "(=1) highlight" instead of copying it from another button.

elvisio22 2 years ago
