Everything you mention, is the whole point of the movie.. The creatures are suppose to reflect the inner spirit of Max, and they are the wild and childish side witch he is loosing to time. Notice how much mood swings they have, and how much they act like children. They name Max king, but what they are looking for is a mother figure because being a child without authority can be dangerous. This movie should speak to all that still remember how it is to be young, as well as to those who are young:)
What the hell is he talking about. It looks good to me. I'm going to go see it. Doesn't seem like a weird thing to make a small book like that in to a movie, but screw it. It looks very worth it.
What Kenneth Turan doesn't address though, is WHY these characters act the way they do in this adaptation. After talking to others who have already seen this movie, I'd say that there is a very good reason these personalities are presented in the way they are.
Most people who have watched this say that, while it is adapted, it fully retains the message and spirit of the original. Even Maurice Sendak fully approves this movie and thinks it has a wonderful vision. I wouldn't call that "raping" the book.

Thumbs down for the review. Thumbs WAY UP for the movie.
It is a modern masterpiece, for anyone who remembers what it is like to be a kid. This man clearly doesn't.

I am not seeing this. They ruined a childhood memory by raping a loved book.
