I applied for the IDF in 2000 via the consulate in Canberra after 6 yrs service in the ADF Army. They rejected my app as I wasn't an Israeli citizen. Would of loved to of served in the IDF.

Phantastisch das es so etwas gibt, bitte unbedingt beibehalten! Ich würde mich sofort freiwillig melden, eine militärische Ausbildung habe ich zwar schon, aber leider nicht von der IDF, sondern bei einer anderen Armee.

Ich wünsche allen die sich freiwillig zur IDF melden viel Erfolg, denn die Ausbildung ist bestimmt sehr gut.

Leider kommt die IDF altersbedingt wohl für mich nicht mehr infrage, was mich sehr traurig stimmt.

I did this two consecutive summers each time on two different bases, had a great time meeting new people and traveling around in the weekends. The guides are great and the soldiers usually very friendly, although many do not know about the program. It's an excellent way of combining a nice relaxing holiday with some honest volunteering.

@MrTriBall ; Who are you kidding about pushing 60? I went at 60 (I just look very young by the Grace of GOD). I went during the Festival of Hanukkah. I met some people there in their 70's - going strong.

SarEl will send you in a Base where the work is less tedious; some only paint fences or whatever. I suffer from fibromyalgia...and did the heavier work. It was fun and you get hands on with soldiers.  And you eat plenty of Isaeli salads EVERY DAY, 3x/DAY. HA. Noon is the best

@MrTriBall ...I was just over there ,I AM 59 ,, There are guys in their 80's doing Sar El volunteer work .. One guy was there for more than 6 months and over 80 ...You must submit medical forms from your doctor..If he says you are in good health you can go....

My Dad did this for a few weeks. He was in his 70's and most of the people in his particular unit - I think the units may be by age - were older than him. They packed medic kits. A lot of them were not Jewish, and they did this all year. One was from Germany.

Oh, and for luckystrike, his wife was not quartered with him. They won't put even married couples on the same side of the hall. But it's volunteer work for the army, not army service.
