Sounded great but Fantasia's from the Aretha school of singing which means as the voice grows older and the range decreases the screeching will grow. Fantasia like Aretha before her will continue to try to hit notes she cannot reach - she will just scream them if she cannot hit them properly.

@taurusg32 Aretha can still sing, however in the 80's Aretha was starting to lose her voice because she smoked 40 cigarettes a day.(According to Aretha herself she stopped in 1991 because she admitted that it ruined her voice) Fantasia on the other hand does not smoke so I highly doubt she will be like the current Aretha.

yeah... people just don't get Fantasia. And thats cool, but don't cut her down. Shes REALLY not a recording artist though. I've heard some of the crap they've put her voice to on albums.. and it really sucks hard. But when shes been on Broadway or doing ANY other live performance? INCREDIBLE! Apparently a lot of you think that if it doesn't sound exactly like the original, it isn't any good. Well, to you I say, any idiot can imitate, but to make a song your own takes skill.

And that "screeching" that she does is part of soul singing. Simon's a fucking idiot for not seeing that. Almost everyone can sing cleanly, but only a few can sing with a rasp. People who don't have an appreciation for "scratchy" voices just don't get what soul is all about.

Sorry, but I don't think you know what you're talking about. If she really was singing "two or three octaves to [sic] high" that would mean her real voice is about as low as a man's voice, which is obviously wrong. She has a naturally husky woman's voice. I grant that her voice isn't for *everybody*. It's not conventionally "pretty" because soul music isn't meant to be "pretty". It's supposed be emotional and heartfelt and sometimes even painful.

@averagehomosapien Believe it or not I actually think she has a beautiful voice, but in my opinion her naturally raspy voice goes hoarse at times when she tries to go for really big notes. Hoarseness is not a sign of good soul singers, its a sign of someone who wasn't taught how to control their vocal range. Like I said, I was actually quite a fan, but for you to think that Fantasia looked back at this performance and almost cringe with some of those hoarse notes then you're crazy dude.

Her voice was screechy but that's just how she sings, there are TONS of singers who have that same rasp in their voice. Luther Vandross, Aretha, Chaka Khan, it's an acquired taste. I, for one, enjoy the raspiness in her voice but some people prefer more linear tones, it's just about people having different tastes.
