@quantumcahill powerful lasers have other uses, such as long-distance wireless power, and for use in factories.
you are currently using a military research project, the internet.
the military do an awful lot for technological progression, regardless of whether or not the initial use is ethical.

@Neylonx I'm well aware of the benign uses of lasers. the point is ''new scientist video'' is more than proud to unveil this new killing machine in the name of ''defense''. and we should be happy about this? fuck that. fuck the military's bloated budget and fuck our ethnocentric indifference to the millions of people that die because of our "progress" as you would put it.

thing is, if they spent this much money on just scientific research with no particular goal in mind, the general population would not be happy.
scientific research is not particularly economical, hence the military spending.

''scientific research'' by definition has a goal in mind: i.e. curing diseases, space exploration, mapping the human genome...etc. No offense, but that was the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Fact is, science is expensive and we spend 50% of our discretionary budget on ''defense'' so science becomes militaristic. No altruism, no compassion... Just go back to sleep...the govt is in charge...
