  • whats next a light saber?

  • Why are we continuing to do this? I mean seriously, these guys are basically killing people just by WANTING to make this stuff. Imagine walking threw a dessert and realize a red beam is pointing right at you, you run away with your heart beating fast and your head bursts in flames. What a scary fucking thing that would be, why cant we all just not kill and resolve our problems. Those idiots in the military are like kids. They dont want to be the more mature people in the situation so they kill.

  • Star trek shit is here already.

  • i shot down my neighbor with a laser i got on Craigs list

  • Dear santa.....

  • the shooters was all like "pew pew, gotchya ur dead" :D

  • They should just get some Cats with Laser Bean Eyes and train them to hunt our enemies. We don't need to put them on ships....

  • @dougblessin Laser Beans are the tastiest!

  • I think we're letting science fiction get the best of us.

  • Great, now when robots take over, they will have lasers to kill us to!

  • @TehUberNation ROFL XD Great point.

  • @TehUberNation Bah, but we need teh robots for that zombie army!

  • What is the range on that thing??

  • @thiel18 a few kilometers probably

  • @thiel18

light travels indefinatelly unless absorbed so

  • Why does the woman narrating this video sound like a voice for a car GPS?

  • SNOOP DA WOOP

  • Its about time. Lets refit a few of the shuttles with these things and go shoot down some aliens. The universe will be ours!!!

  • welcome to the future of warfare

  • What if that plain has mirror surface.

  • @mam16cm ooops?

  • Seems weak. I hope the guidance system will be able to cope with faster targets that try to evade it

  • Did some of you even watch this clip? It ain't no weapon of destruction, but a defense-system against incoming missiles or enemy drones.

If anything this invention is going to reduce destruction and save human lives.

  • @Hax666G sure! the goal has been reached and no one's going to do further research for building laser driven attack systems

  • i was going to ask why in black and white- but id guess that the test was done at night for heat vision/night vision ??

  • This invention can be used to... fry humans to a chunk of coal.

Science has always been the willing whore of obnoxious mass murder.

  • IMA FIRIN MAH LAZER!

  • @Madmonkeythegreat BLARG! XD

  • Sucks they don't tell you what the name of the laser system is. I'm very curious to know more about it...

Though I suppose much of it is still very top-secret hush-hush.

  • PWNED :D

  • JEAH WE HAVE FOUND MORE EFFECTIVE WAYS TO KILL MANKIND

    FUCK YOU

    PEACE

  • aha. next use for it a supersonic anti-ship missile instead of this cheap plastic toy.

  • peace

  • peace love piece luf

  • WOW Realy most Technology these days SUCKS... like why the hell do we need all this shit for? its just causing the human race to kill its self.. THERES SOMETHING CALLED GLOBAL WARMING...

  • @eddy95600 Global warming is just a TV gag if you ask me. Last winter was the coldest one since 2000. And this weapon is so ineffectiv, the only thing you need to defend yourself is a mirror, so don't worry. The only thing it surely caused was a big waste of money! Money they coul have spend to invite things like engines wich don't need gasoline to work. gawd gah stupid! >:(

  • @Supercyzer definitly not yes there have been some errors in the doccuments on global warming but several goverments still state global warming is an issue and not a made up thing

the tempratures are getting more extreeme winters are getting colder summers are getting hotter typhoons getting stronger and tornados are comming more frequiantly

its defenitly an issue nature is trying to restore its self by over compensating other seasons

  • @Supercyzer for instance new york this winter was extreeme

spring in europe is also extreeme

and so is summer russia hase already recorded 700 deaths to heat and drowning isseus relating to hot weather

first time ever power cables have fallen down in netherlands due to wind hose over 90km/h something is changing you probably can call it climate change

  • @klote2314 Lets call it klima extreemation.

  • @eddy95600 lasers don't cause global warming

    you idiot

  • hell they use to have smart machine gun turrets for this job i guess the future about laser technology now.

  • tht drone took way to long to catch fire and crash what if 3 missiles 3 times the speed came to that war ship

it would be dead even tho its a nice lazer it needs to be quicker and more accurate!

  • @klote2314 keep stating effing obious

  • @klote2314 so you do know how far the plane was away from the ship ? how far was it ?

  • @Charlemagne0815 does it really matter?

missiles are way faster i dont se a laser tracking a moving missile going over mach 2

  • @klote2314

    It works- believe me.

  • @kingkill33333 it might work

its just isnt effective enough to put into war

its waaayyyy to slow and costs way to moutch energy!

  • @SeptembersOwn82 your stupid enough to say bullshit like that

  • Imma firing mah lazarr !!!!

  • @SeptembersOwn82 Not officially.

  • Lazzer beamsssssssssssssszzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Yay... more ways to keel each other...

  • Old. I have this and i burn DVDs with it.

  • @Wurstexperte Cool, burn some drones now.

  • @steverooni99 it's the military, so what we're seeing is probably only 1/5th of the capability ... otherwise their "classified" department screwed up in releasing the vid.

  • @steverooni99 I heard the army demonstrated/talked about laser beams shot from a plane at 10000ft, we a range of something like some miles ? [citation needed]

  • Great. Just what we need. A new weapon. Boooooo!

  • Can't the drones just add mirros so to deflect the laser?

  • @MeningsMod That would only reflect the light. Laser weapon technology is used to catch things on fire, and the heat would not be reflected.

  • @TheAmericanPirate

uh, just so you know, the heat of a laser is caused by the light/photons

so if you reflect the light, you reflect the heat. which is why black clothing makes you hotter on a sunny day than white clothing.

  • @Neylonx

The heat is actually caused by reciprocal effects within the affected matter which release partially the photon beams energy and turn it into heat. I do not believe its possible to refelect such a beam entirely. But I dont know for sure.

  • @Neylonx The photons that are not reflected cause the heat. Mirrors do not reflect perfectly.

  • @doctorsamadams i know that, but the guy i was replying to was saying that mirrors 'only reflect the light' not the heat haha

    i know mirrors aren't perfect

  • @MeningsMod no; the laser is so strong that it will burn through the mirror in less than a second.

  • Is that weapon even using a mirror for aiming? Looks like the entire turret is moving, would it need a mirror?

  • Welcome to the future.

  • Can the lasers be fitted to the head of a shark?

  • @thunderpants10 Currently the most awesomeness rank belongs to lasers mounted on bears. Bears with lasers! If the sharks can get them too - I would jizz my pants

  • IMMA FIRIN MAH LAZOR!!!!!!!!

  • I'MMA FIRIN' MEH ANTI AIRCRAFT LAZOR!

  • set lasers to fuck shit up

  • @RBTTIX FUCK YES!

  • lasers seem to be good for antiaircraft and anti missile weapons. Plus a warship would have enough space for equipment to power one.

  • @spark300c the new Ford-class super-carriers will have roughly 6x the power output of a current Nimitz class carrier, from what i've read. Even with electric-based launchers, advanced computers and everything else, I'd say they might have enough room for a few lasers. I mean the 1960 stuff drives four propellers weighing something like 23 tons each, just as propulsion.

  • @jimmybilbo yo Jimmybilbo, Laser power consumption is following Moores law for computing, This particular laser is not that powerful, it uses the salty sea air to excite particles already in the atmosphere to keep the laser focused and at the correct intensity. Hand held lasers like star trek are in development, they first project a misted compound at the target milliseconds before the laser so the beam can travel full strength to it's target. Amazing.

  • Can this laser be reflected back by a mirror? It can be useful against that ships :)

  • Those Aliens are so fucking dead now.

  • @FakePriest Hell yeah!

  • All I can say is this: O_O

  • YEAH WE HUMANS NEED MORE WEAPONS OF DESTRUCTION !!!

THANK YOU FOR PROMOTING WEAPON SYSTEMS ~

    namaste

  • @sundazeberlin

Surely devices that can destroy enemy bombs and drones mid-air don't really count as a 'weapons of destruction' but more of 'weapons of defense'?

  • @maistrooismi

It depends. Are you attacking another country or is another country attacking you?

  • @Saromatae

The point is moot as this low range, inneficient weapon can't kill. It's not a viable weapon for an attack because of these limits.

  • @sundazeberlin anti-air lasers were thought of for taking out ICBM's etc. This keeps a little shield.

  • @sundazeberlin This is a defensive weapon not offensive. Dumbass

WW3 going to happen whether you like it or not.

  • @Mrxb0x Tell that to the next 747 that gets in in-air trip adjustment by "causes unknown". How many passenger carriers from "hostile countries" are going to up and disappear or go down for "mechanical reasons" over the next couple of decades you figure? Good tip off will be when investigators are "barred" from the crime scene for "security reasons", or the us military just conducts the investigation itself and saves the civilian authorities the trouble.

  • @PsychoticusRex OH so they could never ever ever ever before do ANYTHING like that before, but now that they have this laser they're all set. Good point.

Dipshit. If they want something done chances are it's going to happen. This laser is just a means by which that could happen. Who gives a flying fuck.

  • barrle roll see star fox

  • This is another carefully set up experiment designed to make a fragile unreliable system look impressive. Throw in some fog, chaff, smoke, high speed planes and missiles, rough seas, rain, exploding bombs, decoys, and enemies trying to kill you, and then watch this toy choke. The only function of this weapon is to suck money out of the American taxpayer and giver it to defense contractors the live in the Bahamas and subcontract to India.

  • @michalchik right, and when is the last time the USA had a ship confronted by incoming light planes or drones, which it could (and should) shoot down in a time of war?

This isn't a system used in the WW3 you describe. It's used for shooting down planes, drones, perhaps missiles... in modern warfare. It would be used when appropriate to save lives during wars or battles or terrorist attacks.

That's like saying a muzzle-rifle sucks in the swamp, because things get wet, and blah.

  • @jimmybilbo We already have solutions to those scenarios, the Phalanx, AA guns, SAM's, fighter jets, or even a good sniper can take of a light plane or drone. They also work in bad weather conditions which happen VERY often. If I was dumb enough to try to fly a drone into a battle ship (which would not do anything) I would wait for rain. One concussion bomb anywhere near this thing and it optics are out of alignment and probably cracked.

  • @michalchik You speak as though you know how it works.

Perhaps the optics and laser array inself is protected from shock within the assembly? I don't know, but I'm sure someone more briiliant than you or I has come up with a solution.

Anyway, this appears to be an early trial of the technology. I'm sure, as time goes on, the weapon system and the technology behind it will be improved upon and refined so that it surpasses conventional ballistic and missile defense systems.

  • @sexyloser You are right. I am presuming a lot and going off intuition. I may be dead wrong. But I also have inside knowledge of how a lot of these kind systems (I know SDI engineers) get built and what they are capable of, and this kind of demo is the kind of demo they set up when they don't have a system that can really handle battlefield conditions. They show off how rugged and flexible a system is if they think it can handle it. High powered lasers and their optics are extremely fragile.

  • imma firingh mah laz0rz !

  • only a war orientated country like the US could come up with this sort of shit.

  • IS THIS REAL LIFE?

  • well this will solve problems of no-money, corruption, famine, AIDS and the oil spils, iam sure bout that. finally our problems wont become worse, but better.

  • fire the death star cannon

  • My phone takes better videos

  • It takes lots of talent to make video about warships shooting lasers that is extremely UNcool.

  • This is some STAR-WARS shit in 5 years police mans will no longer use a gun ,they will use a lightsaber and the force within!

  • this video has the most hilarious comments ever! :-D

  • Nikola Tesla's dream has arrived...

  • This isn't new tech. Even the footage looks old because it probably is (but that's beside the point).

The military has been useing lasers for many years now and have much stronger ones now than what you see here.

This is a news fail, but mostly in part because the military doesn't show the public stuff until it is old and outdated.

  • The military can invent lasers that shoot stuff down, but they can't get a better camera?

  • @jimjam154

    Laser is more important. :P

  • @jimjam154 it's to make it look old school there buddy

  • @jimjam154 =)) good point XD

  • @jimjam154 The entire budget is going to the laser project. Recording it is a secondary concern. Lol.

  • @jimjam154 hmm, since it's in B&W, it could have been shot at night. still blurry though :(

  • @jimjam154 lol

  • Needs work to be able to take down an Exocet, but hey-everything that helps keep our crews alive! :) Also, DUDE WE ARE SO CLOSE TO LASER_PHASER GUNS!

  • MAKE shore these things stay in the right peoples hands.

  • OMG, LASERS.

    Shit just got real marcus

  • lol i notice that most of the comments are snide telling new scientist that he lazers are wrong... so here we go:

    erm...

  • I think the Army was already using this a few years back atop trucks n hummers.

Laser says... "I am on a BOAT, Pew Pew"

Navy says... "I'mma firin mah lazer"

  • They can use this laser to target an aircraft's subsystem. They can target the pilot, or disable their weapons, or destroy it completely. This laser provide an awesome tactical advantage.

  • I smell new aircrafts, Covered in glass

  • @zkjgrty or mirrors..

  • @zkjgrty I smell marshmallows

  • @chaz76vette

    WIN

  • i wonder if this technology was really invented to help shoot down UFO;s.

  • great even more examples of technology being used to cause even more damage to people and the world.

  • @questionsleadtotruth

this technology is likely to be used as a defensive measure.

    just sayin'

sorta reminds me of the picture of a woman holding a sign saying "this machine kills innocent people" in front of a SAM launcher.

of course she'd never understand why her actions were so deliciously amusing.

  • Nikola Tesla's Death Ray

  • So, my question is, when are we going to have spaceships to mount those things to so we can go conquer the universe?

  • there goes a few 100k into the sea !!

  • Wow. Very cool.

  • now we can shoot down the alien spaceships fuck yeah!

  • I WAS IN THAT PLANE DAMNIT

  • star war now!

  • not convincing, sorry

  • Why is the video of the drone getting shot down like something from a 1950's sci fi movie?

  • @yourafatass24 LOL or fried seagulls ^_^

  • I'm really a HUGE fan of war devices, but in a way I wish they would never be used.

Let's say I like the science part of it.

Idea: Develop cool weapons, make them cheap, and start playing games with them, killing drones! (what? Dreaming is still free, I think...)

  • Comment removed

  • what a waste of tax-payer money

  • Comment removed

  • this is bad.

  • What... the... FUCK?!!

  • The title and pronunciation is all wrong It's "l---a----s---e----r" don't forget the quotation marks

  • To bemoan the US military for doing R&D via an object that was the direct result of US military R&D(the internet)... such irony.

No false dichotomies please, research and x(education ect ect) is not an either or object.

  • IMA FIRIN MSH LAZOR

  • America may have the tech but they are an incompetent military force, they cant even win a desert skirmish in the middle east for crying out loud.

There was a saying during the second world war. When the Japanese fly over the Australians duck. When the Australians fly over the Japanese duck. When the Americans fly over EVERYBODY ducks.

  • What drone did they use? It doesn't look like any kind of drone that the DOD uses...

  • Laser pew pew

  • Awesome!! We need more ways to kill people...i'm sure it will just be used for defense. Just like our $500 billion+ defense budget, which is more than the rest of the world spends on defense...COMBINED!! Way to go scientists...

  • @quantumcahill I'm sensing a hint of sarcasm...but you gotta admit, the lasers are awesome.

  • @quantumcahill powerful lasers have other uses, such as long-distance wireless power, and for use in factories.

you are currently using a military research project, the internet.

the military do an awful lot for technological progression, regardless of whether or not the initial use is ethical.

  • @Neylonx I'm well aware of the benign uses of lasers. the point is ''new scientist video'' is more than proud to unveil this new killing machine in the name of ''defense''. and we should be happy about this? fuck that. fuck the military's bloated budget and fuck our ethnocentric indifference to the millions of people that die because of our "progress" as you would put it.

  • @quantumcahill

thing is, if they spent this much money on just scientific research with no particular goal in mind, the general population would not be happy.

scientific research is not particularly economical, hence the military spending.

  • @Neylonx Wow...i don't even know how to respond to that. ''scientific research'' by definition has a goal in mind: i.e. curing diseases, space exploration, mapping the human genome...etc. No offense, but that was the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Fact is, science is expensive and we spend 50% of our discretionary budget on ''defense'' so science becomes militaristic. No altruism, no compassion... Just go back to sleep...the govt is in charge...

  • oh gawd!

  • i wonder how much tax dollars was spent on that wasted drone? or was it a fake one or something

  • this is starwars in the fucking making!

  • i think nikola tesla just fucked us from beyond the grave.

  • do they at least go *pew pew*?

  • @menschherbert no, its *pachew pachew* or else they're illegal -.-

  • @menschherbert they would be Photon torpedoes

  • The lasers need to be colored, visible, and arrive in short bursts to be acceptable. See: star wars.

  • @tgz1000 Also, make cool PEW PEW sounds and be very slow.

  • Funny!

  • @tgz1000 lasers are not colored and not everything that you see on the movies are true

  • @turkishspade Apparently not everyone can lighten up either.

  • @tgz1000 you do know that light travels at the speed of light right ? lol, so you cant possible have the star wars projectile looking bursts.

  • y nt just nuke?

  • One of the most annoying voices on youtube...
