You must use the reciprical of the variable to change the negative exponent to a positive. In order to do that the Y must go to the denomenator

it doesnt need to go there...its just a rule some mathmaticians like to follow...it can go in the numerator but when you do 14-20=-6, the -6 will go on the numerator. If you want it to go in the denomitor, you bring it down but you switch it from being negative to positive
