If you are fortunate enough to have actually heard of this game in the first place, please, do yourself a HUGE favor and play it, you will not regret it.
The seperate campaigns are excellent stories on their own, no doubt, but their true function is only revealed at the end when it all comes together, and my god it is a total mindf*ck.
I wish I could erase the last 40 hours from my memory so I can relive it all again, I doubt I will ever find anything even close unless I learn Japanese...
"It's that damn good" YOU BETTER BELIEVE HIM AND YOU'D BETTER PLAY THIS GAME ASAP OR I WILL PERSONALLY FUCK YOU! DON'T YOU DARE LOOK UP THE STORY ENDINGS ON YOUTUBE!
Btw, just finished all last night. I cried, I was extremely happy, and was absolutely blown away. THE best visual novel I have ever played. And my first :D
I got this game a while back and I imagine I will dive into it at some point in the near future, but I've been wondering. How many different endings are there? This one guy said that there's twelve in total, is that true? And if I am to get all of the pieces of the story, will I want to complete ALL of the non-main endings (good and bad) before heading towards the true ending with Yagami?
@MattEureka Probably not at this point. Perhaps sometime in the future, though. I'm a bit busy right now though, so I have no plans for when I'll post a new review. Short review? Ultimately disappointing.
@PhantomZwei Ah. So you played it already I see. Yes, it was disappointing. However, you have to admit, the lead up was amazing. It could have been as amazing as Ever 17. There were so many great mysteries that had been set-up. I'm currently playing the Nintendo DS game "999" by the same creator. It was recently released in the U.S. Have you checked that one out yet?
I'm SO glad Aksys decided to pick up 999... Otherwise I wouldn't have even known about its existence.. and it also made me aware of this game, which I'm going to try out! :)
999 is a lot better, so I guess it WAS the best visual novel to reach American shores. 999 Confused the hell out of me when I was going for the true ending.
This game blew my mind. I have never ever read a story as amazing as this and i coudnt even compare another visual novel to it.. this game deserves SO much more attention that it is getting.. it took me TWO WEEKS of searching the internet for hours everyday to get hold of this game and alot of money, and i do not regret it.. this game actually changed my outlook on life. so amazing, words cant describe it.
@number0IX I think it's great. I don't have enough info to be able to say what I like or dislike about it, but as one of, if not my very favorite VN of all time I'm all for a remake of it. At the very least I hope to get ahold of the OST for the remake after it's released. Even I'm not so fanatical as to buy the game itself without a translation, though...and I of course realize that will never happen.
It has allowed me to introduce the game to many people. So thanks. ;) I'd like to suggest that you review Remember 11 as well. It's the sequel to Ever 17. Also do a review for 999, another VN by the same guy for the Nintendo DS.
I just wanted to thank you for this review. I've watched it repeatedly for many years. I really appreciate it and it has helped me to introduce the game to many
When you introduced the two main males... bwahahaha, liar, liar, pants on fire! Anyone who's played the game through knows who's who. And... pffft... Takeshi's a bit of a heavy sleeper, isn't he? xD
I don't see how many people say its a boy's game. Honestly, not to be evil towards boys cuz I know there are exceptions lol, but most guys don't care about romances in games and stories o.o. It's really a girl's thing and honestly the romance is actually good! I've seen lots of movies where romance is the entire genre..but it seems so fake..for this game the romance seemed pure and took notice of each girl's story and history, and overall a great game and was a great buy
After I finished all paths in Ever 17 I told myself I would get a piano one day and play the entire Karma piece. Some time ago I finally got a keyboard and a couple of months ago I managed to play the entire song. What a feeling... I've never played the piano before, nor was I so interested in piano music, but this VN had such an effect on my mind...And that song, along with Tsugumi's screaming from inside that "you know what"(no spoilers)...Words are just not enough for this.
@SoSiization I was referring to the character. She doesn't appear to 'exist' in the Kid's route, much how Sara doesn't in Takeshi's. It's oversimplifying, yes, but that's how it initially appears. =P
I only recently acquired this game, and have yet to start playing it?
I read here that it ain't a hentai game (thank god), but are you able to make any kind of romantic relationship with any of the female characters? Like a light eroge or ecchi VN? Or does the story focuses more on drama and the mysterious and stuff?
Hmmm. I played the game 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors which from the same writer of this game, and as 4 me it's the best game 4 DS. I which if i could find this game, but i can't find it anywhere now :(
The review forgot to mention the massive plotholes (for example, kick the can?) and disappointing final route. Sorry, but the biggest reveal in Coco's route was that Tsugumi's clicking thing is an infrared laser. Besides that one hint, everything interesting in the entire game could've been deduced from the other routes, which had better characterization and more suspenseful moments. But regardless, I'd give E17 a 9/10 just for the song "Karma".
Note to everybody who tries it: You MUST finish it, the best part is in the last, Coco's path. Believe me, it's nothing like the others! You WILL shit bricks!
Ever 17 is a great story that, in all honesty, would be difficult to pull off in any format outside of a visual novel. It's well-written (Although it has a few translation hiccups ) and keeps you guessing through all of the scenarios. It's hard to describe without spoiling the entire game, but the greatest part of the game is how well all the disparate story lines manage to mesh together in the final scenario.
It's a game that once you start playing, you will want to see it through to the end.
@garlicxlr Just to think of it sends a chill down my spine. My god...if I went to a real LeMU I would let out some tears...Hence the fact that I'm a 20 year old guy.
Nothing really compares to Ever17. It's an experience in itself and feels totally different to other Visual Novels because of how the whole story has presented.
Best example of noticeable bad translation in the game: "Naturally I knows the hacker!"
@XRory95 No, there's no h-content in this game. And you take the role of a male with the scenarios revolving around numerous girls, but I think the story could easily be enjoyed by a girl.
Just finished the game as a girl who just recently got into visual novels and I was bawling like a baby. It's still super Meta, even though I align closest with Sora Agenasaki.
@XRory95 Technically it's a boys only game by having the cast mostly of women and having a dating element to the game. Which is what kills the game for me.
@crazymaysunrise Well. being forced to date won of the women in the game does kill it for me as it's a distraction to the main story plot. It's something they didn't really need to add to get the story across. Like how in some action movies they cram romance into it for no reason.
@Maverynthia But part of the main story plot is the romance. I mean...Takeshi is a major protagonist, but I did not necessarily see him sacrificing himself for just anyone. Likewise, The Kid and You was a sort of...I'm not sure how to explain it, but I found it to make sense. If you didn't like the romance, then did you enjoy the Kid+Sara ending? Or the Kid+Tsugumi+Sara? If you take the romance out of this plot, you don't even have a plot because two characters aren't even conceived without it.
Does anyone know more VN's with plot twists like this? I want more of these stories
I've heard ever7 and remember 11 aren't as emotional as Ever17 and is more of a murder mystery :o. I'm Chinese though so I can try the Chinese translations instaed of waiting for English :o
I feel like this novel gets so much praise and people are afraid to say anything bad about it. Ultimately, I was a bit disappointed and in the future will read sci fi books instead. It is hard to top the works of Adams, Stephenson, Reynolds, Haldeman, Herbert, etc. I certainly haven't finished all of those potential works yet and they are better and can be read in less time.
It is tough to get through these arcs as there are many places were they tend to drag. I do not need you to beat into my head that ______ is at this point in time a supposed fact. Also the music can be quite good but it is sometimes inappropriate to have tense music when clearly they establish that they are completely safe for another 6-7 days. Also the music got to me that there are 26 tracks for 50-60 hours of novel. That's a lot of the same music being heard.
The final arc with coco can be tense and satisfying but you will spend maybe 40-50 hours or so not in that arc on the other 4 arcs. These arcs do not give you much in the way of answers and rather create an incredible number of questions in your mind. This can be a great way to go about writing a novel but there needs to be more revelation or satisfaction in the first 40-50 hours, this is called progression.
I think it needs to be said that VN are not for everyone. I recently decided to experience a visual novel and I chose this one to be the first. This vn can be very slowly paced. It is important to note that this is really more novel then anything else and not up to the standards of the best actual novels.
@MrFate888 Ever 17 isn't perfect, but you have to consider the medium. Yes, there are certainly better traditional novels out there, but as far as visual novels that can be found available in english, Ever 17 is undoubtedly one of the best. Like you say, it's important to temper your expectations, but bear in mind this review is self-contained within the visual novel category, and not intended to compare it to traditional novels. That said, thanks for your input for those that might be curious.
@MrFate888 Id say thats true, VNs arent for everyone, however if this was written as just a novel using the "True" arc, the story itself is better than most actual novels out there in my opinion. Especially the ones regarded as the "best" nowadays. But thats just my opinion. It differs for each person.
It's a shame that this isn't being made anymore. I'm sure this would've made a huge profit if they would've just let it sell longer. This game is epic. EPIC. LOVE IT. Amazing Job with the review. I agree entirely with it. It's just that damn good. Too bad they didn't translate the Infinity Series of visual novels. I wanted to read them all... Too bad the makers of the game went bankrupt... WHY!!!? T>T
@ranma5 Check out Swan Song. I will warn you that there is a small bit of hentai, and it deals with rape and murder at various points, but it handles it pretty well. Most graphic things are only described instead of shown, so it's not disturbing. The art and plot are both great. I just started Ever 17, but if you like the idea of a few people trying to survive on their own, Swan Song might appeal to you.
This was a great game! I had no idea how deep the story was untill i got on coco's path. All i have to say to anyone who likes anime or visual novels.... get this!!!! It is great! Also its not a dirty visual novel which is hard to find, and to find a good non dirty visual novel.... well thats even harder.
You know I have to agree this game really is taht damn good. Just finished Coco's route and wow this was a great ride. Some things I predicted but others really surprised me. Really glad I checked this one out.
I hate asking cause i normally dont do this but ,is there anywere i can get the full version for free.I played the trail a few times and badly want to play it in full but dont know were.PLEASE HELP? or recomend another one that similer and free.Thank you
I got an ad for this at an animecon in 2006 or 2007... I don't usually like guy-marketed visual novels because they're usually hentai, but this looks really good. And hey, I like cute girls as much as the next panaesthetic asexual girl... ^^; ... unless it's fanservicey. Is it fanservicey? o_o
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I watched through the video... it is a little fanservicey. And the squeaky bishoujo voices... the squeaaaky bishoujo voiices... it looks like a great game for people who like bishoujos, but for those who don't ... ^^;
It is, but it's still available at many places online for a very good deal. I'm looking at one right now that's available for $26.95, so it isn't yet difficult to get ahold of.
Actually, it looks like I was misinformed on this. The sites that I'd seen it listed at apparently don't have it in stock, but merely haven't removed it from their product pages. Apologies, and good luck in your search!
I know what website you're talking about. They've had it "in stock" for a minimum of four months! I don't think it's that hard to say that it's "out of stock" for them.
I've had this game for some time now after I saw just the art on a site. I was really pleased to find a visual novel without hentai, so I immediately tried it out. After finishing Tsugami and Sora's paths I've found it a bit harder to get on Kid's just because I adored Takeshi so much >>;
Great review for the game. The ending part struck me as perfect with the words matching the beat of the song~
Do you know where I can find the English version?

I think it needs to be said that VN are not for everyone. I recently decided to experience a visual novel and I chose this one to be the first. This vn can be very slowly paced. It is important to note that this is really more novel then anything else and not up to the standards of the best actual novels.
MrFate888 2 years ago
@MrFate888 Ever 17 isn't perfect, but you have to consider the medium. Yes, there are certainly better traditional novels out there, but as far as visual novels that can be found available in english, Ever 17 is undoubtedly one of the best. Like you say, it's important to temper your expectations, but bear in mind this review is self-contained within the visual novel category, and not intended to compare it to traditional novels. That said, thanks for your input for those that might be curious.
PhantomZwei 2 years ago

WHY!!!? T>T
ShadowCorrupted 2 years ago
Because visual novels don't own much of the market :P
N2Lucky 2 years ago
Erm, in Japan they make up nearly 70% of PC games released. Outside however... yeah.
And KID went bankrupt, because they started releasing crap after crap, I guess hoping it would sell just because of KIDs reputation.

Yeah i meant in like America.

Nashah2 2 years ago
You know I have to agree this game really is taht damn good. Just finished Coco's route and wow this was a great ride. Some things I predicted but others really surprised me. Really glad I checked this one out.

DAMMM!!!!
They gave up on the DVD player format???
I wish they didn't. because I have to rely on DVD player to play this. I don't have a Windows PC and instead have a Mac Apple.
So I can't even play it.
-_-
But I wish they could have still made Visual Novels that can play on DVD players because they are the only format I could play games like these on.

Is all you do the entire game is talk to characters? seems pretty boring.
noaheugene20 2 years ago
Nope. You also have to make some important decisions, and this game has multiple endings. And an intriguing story.
So I don't think you'll be bored.

can someone who has played (and finished) this game tell me how long it takes to complete it?
I know it will vary from person to person, but to have more or less an estimate amount. D: thanks.
Fepepinar 3 years ago
30 some hours
tbgox 2 years ago
Try over 100
Hakuoro917 2 years ago
Its officially 60 hours long.
You have two characters to pick from, 5 paths to go through, and 12 endings to see.
Final arc (aka Coco's path) alone takes 10 hours. And not a second feels wasted.

I got an ad for this at an animecon in 2006 or 2007... I don't usually like guy-marketed visual novels because they're usually hentai, but this looks really good. And hey, I like cute girls as much as the next panaesthetic asexual girl... ^^; ... unless it's fanservicey. Is it fanservicey? o_o

I watched through the video... it is a little fanservicey. And the squeaky bishoujo voices... the squeaaaky bishoujo voiices... it looks like a great game for people who like bishoujos, but for those who don't ... ^^;

It is, but it's still available at many places online for a very good deal. I'm looking at one right now that's available for $26.95, so it isn't yet difficult to get ahold of.
PhantomZwei 3 years ago
Really?
Where is it available?
I can't find it...
pheonixstorm3 3 years ago
Actually, it looks like I was misinformed on this. The sites that I'd seen it listed at apparently don't have it in stock, but merely haven't removed it from their product pages. Apologies, and good luck in your search!
PhantomZwei 3 years ago
I know what website you're talking about. They've had it "in stock" for a minimum of four months! I don't think it's that hard to say that it's "out of stock" for them.

J-list is the best place right now. $24.95 but they have a limited stock

I've had this game for some time now after I saw just the art on a site. I was really pleased to find a visual novel without hentai, so I immediately tried it out. After finishing Tsugami and Sora's paths I've found it a bit harder to get on Kid's just because I adored Takeshi so much >>;
Great review for the game. The ending part struck me as perfect with the words matching the beat of the song~
