  • What is happening at 1:36 ?? Sound like a ride cymbal, but he plays the Hi-hat?

  • Does anyone know where I can find the live version of this where Layne sang the verses and Jerry Sang the chorus?

  • Sweet ass lyrics, awesome solo, rockin ass heavy riffs and the best singer to come out of grunge rock! Great song!

  • i 24 che hanno messo non mi piace si dilettano nell'arte di succhiare cazzi!!!

  • Them mutha fuckas make me want to start my own band! Damn! lol!

  • There are still 2 members left right?

  • @TheBANZAILUKE Of the original lineup, yes. Mike Inez took over on bass for Mike Starr in early 1993 (this performance was recorded on February 26th of the same year). Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney are still alive and kicking ass.

  • @GotMeWrong1984 Mike Inez also ;)

  • RIP Layne Staley and Mike Starr!

  • mike's hair, gotta love it!

  • live its even better!

  • Awsome song. Too bad the lead singer isn't alive any more.

  • @airsoftnotherstuff His name is Layne Staley, know it and love it!

  • i dont know about anyone else, but i cant listen to the new stuff and think of AIC. it's not the same. how can you carry on with the band name when the lead singer passed away? or when the frontman / guitarist dies?

to me THIS is AIC, pure love for this tune :)

  • Layne Staley>Jesus christ

  • @mbCASISmb existence is always better than fiction though, surely.

  • To think there was a time Jools Holland had real rock on his show and not wanky NME "indie" drivel

  • When you listen to this on headphones you realise just how fuckin heavy it is

  • Solo - nailed it.

  • Chuck Norris sings this while he showers

  • Dont compare the late great Layne to that a**hole, Bono. Show respect.

  • looks a bit like Bono

  • nirvana was more selable cos he had a son and wife...LAYNEis da shit

    sorry about my english...

  • @1911agp he had a daughter not a son lol

  • jerry kills it

  • Excellent performance. Too bad the mix sucks. Too dry and Jerry's voice is way too low in the mix. But hey, thanks for posting!

  • his voice on this is incredible, his vibrato echoes its crazy

  • Agreed man - been playing for 20 years myself. My wife would not have noticed though.

  • What's up with Sean hitting the hi-hat in the video at 1:36 but there's the sound of the ride being hit instead?

  • @ILikeWafflz absolutely! Well spotted (although easy once you are waiting for it). Probably editing for TV and the editor doesn't know the diff between a hat and ride

  • @xwinglover When you actually play the drums and you closely watch the drummer on every live video you look up, stuff like that isn't only not hard to spot, it really sticks out.

  • owwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • watch?v=WFCoOjSDh70

    B&B & Alice

  • Layne was a small guy when he died but his voice reached higher than the tallest mountain

  • Layne Staley looks like Bono Vox ,but in metal way LOOOL

  • Comment removed

  • @Zappafan1980 Very true.

  • epic

  • I just love the way at 1:29 Layne gets in to the rhyme then shouts "YEAHH!" Thats what I call kickass!

  • I wanna make love to this song. :)

    <3

  • 3 Things I wanna do before I die ,

    1 , Have Layne's hairstyle

2 . be as sexy as Mike Starr

3 Touch Mike Inez's hair xD

  • I dont know who said FAIL but feck off!!

  • acabaremos siendo un gran montón de huesos...

  • I can't believe in the 90's, just 20 years ago. Just being yourself got you to be a huge rock star. If you look at bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains. These guys look like regular joes, they looked like me and friends, wearing just jeans and a t-shirt. And it got them to be rock stars because of it. Nowadays you have to look and sound a certain way or record labels won't give you a chance.

  • @thefallofoscar That's true and it was what made the 90's grunge scene blowup so quickly. The 80's metal scene was all superficial: big hair, excess, and little focus on the actual music. Nirvana came around and said "fuck that, we just wanna make music our way" and so it was done. It's disappointing how record labels go back and forth between signing bands with actual talent, and those that aren't just a gimmick that can sell records.

  • @GotMeWrong1984

your point about Nirvana is true, i'm not disputing that nor am I just complaining or anything, but I'd like to point out that Nirvana wouldn't have been half as popular if bands like Pixies and Sonic Youth hadn't changed the landscape of music first

  • @DanieLatzanich Very true, them as well as punk/alternative rock bands like the Melvins and Green River really laid the groundwork for Nirvana and the early 90s grunge scene. I guess what I was trying to say was that in the eye of the public, the average listener, they were seen as the flagship band of the movement.

  • @GotMeWrong1984 Wrong, wrong, wrong...

    1) "Grunge" was merely a scene, not a genre of music.

    2) Soundgarden and especially AIC are Heavy Metal bands.

    3) The vast majority of 80's metal focused 100% on the actual music. Even if you're talking about Glam Metal bands, most musicians of those bands were way more talented at playing their instruments than Kurt Cobain.

    4) Even if it wasn't their intention, Nirvana was an incredibly marketable band, especially for teenagers and young adults.

  • @metalrules13 I never said that the Grunge scene was a genre of music. I was merely using it as a way to group the variety of bands that came around in the early 90s. Points 2 and 4, totally agree.Point 3, I was talking about glam metal and what rock music in general became in the later half of the 80s. Agreed many of the Glam bands were talented, just doesn't mean they made the best music. Guess I'm just not a fan of the glam scene so let's just consider that my personal opinion.

  • @GotMeWrong1984 I'm not a fan of most Glam bands either, and I'm also not a fan of Nirvana. And I agree, whether you like one or the other is just a matter of personal opinion. My point is that Nirvana became so successful because most people were fed up with the late 80's glam scene, and Nirvana offered the exact opposite, both musically and stylistically. It doesn't necesarily make them better or worse than what came before or after, it just makes them different.

  • @metalrules13 Agreed man.

  • @thefallofoscar

    >just being yourself got you to be a huge star

I disagree. I don't think AIC or Nirvana were rooting to be big starts but it happened because they were discovered. It wasn't them being themselves it's due to them being amazing musicians.

  • @thefallofoscar I agree with you. But if you think what clothes and styles AIC had during their years you could say that they got very famous due to their style and music.

  • @thefallofoscar i have a feeling there will be a revolution and someone will come along who will change everything, eventually people have to get sick of over-produced records and auto-tuned voices, and songs about how fun it is being famous....... while there is still fans of alice in chains, nirvana, pearl jam ect. out there, some fan will step out and get people listening to 'good' music again

  • @tom0bob thats basicaly what we need, another cobain. atleast the people before the 90's like MJ were at least talented. Hopefully my band can make an impact someday.

  • @thefallofoscar Sort of agree but I think part of the whole 'grunge' thing was the "ordinary"ness of it... I think the record labels latched onto this idea, and as a result sold more records.

remember at the same time there were people like Celine Dion ect -

I dont think the 'grunge' movement really represents a microcosm of the 90's music industry really...

  • @thefallofoscar these bands had talent! nowadays they have autotune . .

  • @mobstermafi Correct me if I'm wrong but I think if the hi hat is open all the way it can sound like a ride

  • @mobstermafi No he is just hitting towards the centre of the hi-hat, it vibrates less and gives a shorter sound much more like the ride

  • @danathor99 Ah okay, thanks for the correction

  • yuussssss

  • Mike Starr is amazing!!! r.i.p

  • I don't know why, but I always think of Albert Wesker at 2:06.

  • @EhSteve8690 Hah, ya Layne did have that look at the time

  • @EhSteve8690 i always think that anyway haha

  • @EhSteve8690

If you've seen the "Again" music video, which I'm sure you have - I feel like the character Albert Wesker was designed off that music video :P

  • I think this is my favorite of their live performances of all time.

    DuVall is gold.

Layne Staley is platinum topped with gold, silver and bronze !!

  • i have played this video over 100 times in the last month. no new songs get more than 1 play from me these days. good music lives forever.

  • Mike's hair is fucking awesome hahaha

  • THE BEST BAND FUCKERS YEAHHH!

  • You know what man i want a movie about Layne too but I dont want sound like a dick. But I rather have some legit production company do it not an idie thing or somethiing like that. Cuz if they mess up theyre really going to mess up. I think a movie will be made someday we just have to be patient. I mean I f theyre going to make a movie about Kurt Cobain and all he mostly did was sleep all day i think they will make a Layne movie. Like Chris Cornell said Alice in Chains lived the rock life.

  • @notavailableisnotava Well I've got good news and bad news for you. The good news is that there is a movie about Layne currently in the early stages of production. The bad news is that it's based on the books about Layne by Adriana Rubio and that the Jerry and the gang aren't too happy about how Layne is being portrayed. This has really held up the movie and I this point, it's unclear whether it'll ever even be finished.

  • @GotMeWrong1984 that is exactly what i mean isnt like some sort of indie film. I mean if that chick cant do a book right what makes you think shes going to do a whole fucking movie right. Not only how they portray Layne but the acting the directing. I dont want to see a movie about Layne with horrible acting and a bad script. That would just make everything look bad and it would make somebody that is a good writer or director think twice about making a movie about Layne.

  • @GotMeWrong1984 Are you serious.....My eyes just lit the fuck up.....Where did you here that and why is Alice not happy with it. Is it about the drugs cuz that shits gonna piss me off if that's the way Layne is gonna be portrayed. I think you should carry on and make that movie yourself...Mad respect for you for putting a movie together. I'm really gonna start looking for clips and pieces of Layne, Alice, and Mad season.....So if you need any I'll give em to you. Keep it up and Rock Out..

  • @RebornLayneStaley Thanks, I appreciate it. There's gotta be problems when the movie was supposed be in production in 2008 and there's still nothing going on with it. The guy picked to play Layne, Lathan McKay, has a facebook page and will likely respond if you ask him about it. The band wasn't too happy about the Adrianna Rubio book about Layne because they think some things were falsified as well. It's a real mess and it's sad.

  • Great performance! Love Layne's hair combed back, but then again, Layne's hair looks awesome no matter how he wears it. AIC forever!

  • 1:36 : S you do it all wrong : O

  • @MrLazarsd WTF is happening to you? are you stoned motherfucker? who cares?? JUST ENJOY THE MUSIC dude.. give a heavy punch on your dick!!!!!

  • this song is the best say all the true!

  • J@sus Christ. 2 of the original 4 are gone. And Lady Gaga is still alive? Where's the justice?!

  • @darrensilverman73 man its simple. God wants a bass lesson, so he call starr.

  • negatives- jerry fucked up the solo - jerry's mic wasn't working -the audience barely even applauded at the end (what a bunch of assholes)

    positives-layne sounded amazing

  • Their voices merge one to other so amazingly...

RIP Layne and Mike, continue to rock in the heaven of rock!

  • I love the way Layne and Cantrell work off of each other's vocals...sigh...such a tragedy...

  • I only want to say that I'm thankful of the simple fact that when I was 13, these guys were my musical idols, not all those other so called artists who shall not be named, I pity 13 year olds and the times they're living.

  • my headphones won't go any louder.....crap

  • @alantecontra LOL! EXACTLY!

  • dam this song should be over 4 minutes !!!!!!

  • rip mike

  • wth?!?!?!? at 1:35 the drummer is playin the high hat when hes supposed to be palying the ride...

  • @fendermatt497 lol you're right xD

  • WTF at 1:36 the drummer is not playing the ride

  • sick bass line

  • all i have to say is ....FUCK YES!!!. thank you

  • Mike Starr is already above, unmistakeble thundering accompaniment in AIC!!!

    RIP Mike from Spain

  • This is how it's done fuck heads. RIP guys.

  • Rip mike and layne

  • @mcdawnie Hey Dawn!!

  • i love Mike's curly hair.

  • Here's a good one. I was playing in a band in the mid '90's, playing classic rock covers. The bar owner, some drunken hillbilly, said our music was too loud and too heavy. After 20 minutes of his interruptions, we played Them Bones, Mr Crowley, and No More Tears(Ozzie). We packed up, and walked out without saying a word or taking a dime from that jackass. Best of all, he went out of business less than a year later. So, thank you Alice in Chains.

  • Damn.. I like this better than the LP ver.

  • FUCK YEAHHHH the DIRT ALBUM what a masterpiece of brilliant disturbing shit, i love it ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • @cowboysfromjerk Never has anyone said something so eloquently XD

  • @cowboysfromjerk

You arn't fucking lying are you, man?

    :)

  • @IWantToTasteDirtyx3 no fuckkking way ¡¡¡¡ i swear to my mother´s grave aic is the only prescription to my mind ,soul, and ears ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • fuck yeah that album is the shit

  • extraordinarily powerful voice!

  • Sabbath-esque

  • Another priceless performance by my favirote band Alice in Chains.

  • Oh man this song kicks so much ass!

  • ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @thebassdude3 yeah man.. my bad... thats basically all chords half step down and lower E tunned into Db( step and a half down) like 'sludge factory'.. do you know if there is more aic songs in this tune?

  • nobody ever comments saying how great jerry is lol like yeah layne is literally the best singer ever but jerry doesnt get enough credit i think he deserves more thats just me though

  • @TheSlackerdude agree with you.. jerry is my biggest inspiration as guitar player

  • drop D tunned guitar = insane riffs :P

  • DEAR ALL ROCK AND NIRVANA FANS, FEBRUARY 20TH IS KURT COBAIN'S BIRTHDAY. THAT DAY WE WILL ALL VISIT THE "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" VIDEO, LIKE IT, AND WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY. NOT ONLY WILL IT PAY BACK RESPECT TO HIM, IT WILL ALSO HELP NIRVANA GET TO THE TOP OF YOUTUBE AGAIN. THUMBS UP THIS COMMENT AND REPOST THIS ON ANY NIRVANA OR ANY ROCK VIDEO

  • hm just isnt the same with 1 guitar

  • wow....thats...alot of hair

  • @sneezo16 Twas the trend at the time my friend. I still remember seeing "Friends don't let friends get haircuts" written on Mike Inez's bass :D

  • @GotMeWrong1984 ye,the acoustic one but i couldnt tell which was the word after get...xD thats awesome, considering i have dreadlocks :D

  • @GotMeWrong1984

not only the trend in that time, me and much of my friends still have a lot of hair on our hads.

  • @sneezo16 thats what she said

  • @jackman94 lol

  • RIP

  • @orgasmos360 It's like the days that Cobain and Dimebag died...you always seem to remember where you were.

  • What a shame that we have to see google ads featuring people like Rhianna at the bottom of this.. I'm surprised it wasn't introduced by Lady Gaga or something.. in the words of another god of rock King Buzzo of the Melvins; "The world is not a right place". lol. *smh*

  • BBC was lucky enough to capture Layne in rare form, his vocals were amazing. Jerry's were mixed too low so the harmonies didn't come off great, and those and the lyrics are what make AIC so special to me.

  • @coopersgrl jools holland show was still in its infacy back then sound wasnt always good on heavy bands

  • layne was a great singer!!! and jerry's solo's fuckin amazin. my fav aic solo!!!!!

  • Kick ass solo

  • at first i turned it down cause it was loud, then i turned it all the way up cause i realized i would rather blow my eardrums to aic then to hear normally for the rest of my life

  • great lyrics

  • I love the way they perform this song live. I wish it was like that on the album version

  • jools holland used to be good...you should see some of the shite he gets on his show these days :(

  • This song kicks ass, gotta love that seattle sound... C'mon you got AIC then you got soundgarden, nirvana and pearl jam were good too but for me they dont compare to those two. Nirvana were more poppy and pj just dont cut it for me. Melvins are from there too i think, the list goes on people... GRUNGE saved us from hair bands and i think its time for another rock revival just dont know where it comin from this time.

  • Hands down the best performance of this song, unadulterated mastery.

  • RIP LS.

    AIC still THE GRUNGE

  • I would kill so many people to have been at this show.

  • i like jerry's G&L///cool guitar....i had one..

  • This might be a long shot, but does anyone know which kind of leather jacket Layne is wearing? It's lookin' awesome!

  • 5 stars for this video.

  • simplesmente Layne :/ Good Times..

  • Love this song but it seems like the rest of the band besides Layne is playing this song at too slow of a tempo. It seems like he's the only one that realizes it and keeps trying to pull them up to speed but they keep draggin it down.

  • @badjesus666 I think part of that's just how they are. I like to describe AIC's style as controlled chaos. Layne's the madman behind the wheel while the rest of the guys are in the back hanging on for dear life! XD

  • @GotMeWrong1984 It's like in Man in the Box when Layne is yelling during the chorus but cantrell sings softly.

  • @GotMeWrong1984 i wouldn't call aic chaos at all. I call it beautiful. There music is about taking something ugly and making it beautiful; as the great cantrell once said. One other thing fuuuk layne sounds amazing. tht screram at 0:46 gves me shivers haha

  • @erraticchromatic You cant call that a scream. Check the casino brawl- reenact

  • @bl0wan haha what was that shit? bunch of emos screaming like their crazy.. sounded like shit. AIC is real music

  • @badjesus666 bullshit! its perfect!

  • @badjesus666 They are for sure playing in time

  • @badjesus666

i think jerry wrote this song purposely out of time.

  • @badjesus666

i think jerry purposely wrote this song out of time.

  • @badjesus666 If anything Layne is singing this song too fast mate if you listen to studio recording of this song layne doesn't sing anywhere near as fast as he does in this.

  • this is fantastic

  • they need to turn Jerry's mic up .. can't hear them harmonizing. As always, Layne sounds great so does Jerry, you miss so much when you can't hear them both! To me that is crucial to enjoy this and many other AIC songs.

  • @coopersgrl

I agree. the harmonization is one of the things that makes aic so special

  • dude i wish i could have the look layne possesed

  • layne is hot, wish he was alive, more from my age and than meet him! =)

  • Bad video editing @ 1:34 on the overhead drum shot - he's playing the "ting t-t-t-ting" on the ride, but it shows him playing the hi-hats like in the verse. Tsk tsk...

Amazing live rendition of this song though!!!! This whole performance is perfect.

  • @RunningFromSatan i aslso noticed that

  • @RunningFromSatan Don't look at me, the BBC done messed up :D

  • @GotMeWrong1984 Oh I wasn't accusing you! whoever the editor for Jools Holland tried to pull a fast one...not sure why, it seems like they had that camera on all the time....or maybe Sean Kinney can make his hi-hats sound like a ride cymbal on command...who knows! :P

  • @RunningFromSatan That'd be a cool trick, I wouldn't put it past Sean XD

  • @RunningFromSatan i play drums for 16 years there was a time all i had

was a cracked crash cymbal and had to us the bell of the hi hat to make it sound like a ride it is possible... im just saying if your good enough you can make a hi hat sound like a ride or crash cymbal

  • @RunningFromSatan how do they manage to fuck it up that badly haha

  • @RunningFromSatan This was a 100% genuine live recording from beginning to end.Apparently you're not a drummer. You can manipulate high hats to make that sound.Poor observation on your part.

  • @premiumoj I actually consider it a fairly keen observation on my part (although it's actually pretty obvious). I know you can make a ride sound by hitting the BELL of the top hi-hat in the open state (P.S. You're right, I'm not a drummer, but I have played drums enough to know a few tricks). Rewatch the clip, it's just a 3 second re-use of an earlier shot...just poor editing. I also never doubted the validity that this actually was a "genuine" recording...there is no dispute there.

  • Pinche rolota está de huevos!!!!!!

  • in the first few seconds of this song, jerry looks like a little kid

  • Check my attempt at the solo of this song! ;)

  • leather jacket sunglasses goatee side burns badass looking unique voice = LAYNE STALEY

  • love this song love alice and chains forever rip singer

  • Some say we're born into the grave.
