The reason the Talban was in power was because during the cold war the Soviets were gaining influence in Afghanistan. Under Soviet influence Afghanistan was a secular nation where women were educated and could vote and dress the way they wanted. Then the USA government armed mujahadeen fighters in order to get SOviet influence out of Afhganistan. After that the Taliban took over due to what the USA government did.
