I lived in Europe for 3 years and visited France on many occasions and had a chance to talk to many French citizens as well as many other European citizens and they dont mind paying taxes as long as they go to proper expenses, they all love their national healthcare system and wont give it up. My father, a Vietnam Vet, choose to pay through blue cross and blue shield back in 1980's to 1999, even though he had the option of using a VA hospital. There were non near him. When he started having issues he still had to travel 50 mile for surgeries. It was much further to travel to a VA Hospital. Indeed Health Care needs to be reformed. But the government could not even provide a Hospital near by. Thus he chose his own doctor near by and one in Houston.
Are there really those who can't get health care? Probably few and far between. None of us can afford it, so we're all in the same boat. There are charitable hospitals as well. I'm sure a trillion dollar plan will solve it though, throwing money at a problem solves anything!

I've been in the Army for over 8 years, I've served in Iraq and Afghanistan and I've been under goverment run healthcare for almost 9 years now (8 as active duty, 1 year as a reservist) I can honestly say that government run healthcare is by far one of THE BEST in the country. Tricare is the active duty system and the Veterans Administration is great, I've never had to wait longer then a few minutes to see a doctor and the service is top notch. All these right wing myths are nonsense.
sounds to me you are one of the very few who has had such excellent service, but before you call my ideas (and those of so many others -in fact a greater % of the population,) why not research a bit more ouside your own life and see how so many others are treated.

I was stationed in Europe for 3 years and talked to as many German, French, British, Austrian, Italian and even Candian troops when I was in Afghanistan and they all love their healthcare systems. Not one of the Europeans I talked to would ever give up their healthcare systems. Yes they agreed they pay higher taxes but they would rather do that then live w/o a safety net. And they also told me that myths of long lines and rationed care were false.
well, it looks like we wont come to an agreement and that is okay, but what i would recommend is read the bill that is proposed and then make a decision.

She was insured w/ Cigna (private for profit healthcare system) She was 17 yrs old when she died because Cigna refused to pay for a liver transplant that could have saved her life. Cigna deemed it "expieremental" and refused to cover the transplant DESPITE what doctors demanded. Is that not a death panel? Is that not rationed healthcare? Is that not a waiting list? @DeuceMP2 the safety net is good , however long waits are no myth atleast in urban centres ! I drive 3 hours out of town to go to the hospital because it is faster than waiting 8 hours minimum in Toronto. Don't believe what people say go on the website health canada and check out average emergency room wait times in large urban centres to see for yourself.
Most of my friends who are enrolled in the VA system and are still on active duty are all satisfied w/ their government healthcare. Not to mention actual balanced non biased polls done by private companies whos reputation and business depends on their reliability have shown that 70% of Americans are in favor of public option healthcare. Oh and I didnt commit 9 years of my life to this countrys defense w/o thinking of more then myself. I know people who have never served wouldnt understand that.

Thanks for your service but I think you are wrong although you are satisfied with the VA health Service, there are also those that pay for their health care and are satisfied. I just don't think you can put the entire country on this system and expect that it will not have its own problems. You may seem satisfied with your VA care. But there have been times when people like may father who did not like the VA health care. Because government controls this program, thus they can cut this program.

TipoftheSlung, I am a veteran and I have experienced government run health care as in VA. And it leaves a lot to be desired. I qualify for VA health care but I refuse to use it. NHS can not possibly be any better.
The true test of wether the NHS is good or bad would come at election time in the UK, if there were a push to have it done away with the would be a political party who opposed its existence. I am not saying that it is perfect, no system is and the way your system is run through insurance companies certainly isn't. There is no mandate whatsoever in the UK to disband the NHS and it would be political suicide to suggest it.

I lived in Europe for 3 years and visited France on many occasions and had a chance to talk to many French citizens as well as many other European citizens and they dont mind paying taxes as long as they go to proper expenses, they all love their national healthcare system and wont give it up. My father, a Vietnam Vet, choose to pay through blue cross and blue shield back in 1980's to 1999, even though he had the option of using a VA hospital. There were non near him. When he started having issues he still had to travel 50 mile for surgeries. It was much further to travel to a VA Hospital. Indeed Health Care needs to be reformed. But the government could not even provide a Hospital near by. Thus he chose his own doctor near by and one in Houston.

I've been in the Army for over 8 years, I've served in Iraq and Afghanistan and I've been under goverment run healthcare for almost 9 years now (8 as active duty, 1 year as a reservist) I can honestly say that government run healthcare is by far one of THE BEST in the country. Tricare is the active duty system and the Veterans Administration is great, I've never had to wait longer then a few minutes to see a doctor and the service is top notch. All these right wing myths are nonsense.

Well as a matter of fact I have. I was stationed in Europe for 3 years and talked to as many German, French, British, Austrian, Italian and even Candian troops when I was in Afghanistan and they all love their healthcare systems. Not one of the Europeans I talked to would ever give up their healthcare systems. Yes they agreed they pay higher taxes but they would rather do that then live w/o a safety net. And they also told me that myths of long lines and rationed care were false.

She was insured w/ Cigna (private for profit healthcare system) She was 17 yrs old when she died because Cigna refused to pay for a liver transplant that could have saved her life. Cigna deemed it "expieremental" and refused to cover the transplant DESPITE what doctors demanded. Is that not a death panel? Is that not rationed healthcare? Is that not a waiting list? @DeuceMP2 the safety net is good , however long waits are no myth atleast in urban centres ! I drive 3 hours out of town to go to the hospital because it is faster than waiting 8 hours minimum in Toronto. Don't believe what people say go on the website health canada and check out average emergency room wait times in large urban centres to see for yourself.

Most of my friends who are enrolled in the VA system and are still on active duty are all satisfied w/ their government healthcare. Not to mention actual balanced non biased polls done by private companies whos reputation and business depends on their reliability have shown that 70% of Americans are in favor of public option healthcare. Oh and I didnt commit 9 years of my life to this countrys defense w/o thinking of more then myself. I know people who have never served wouldnt understand that.

I just don't think you can put the entire country on this system and expect that it will not have its own problems. You may seem satisfied with your VA care. But there have been times when people like may father who did not like the VA health care. Because government controls this program, thus they can cut this program.

The UK healthcare system only looks good to people who dont have to use it.
Sure there's lots of excellent doctors & nurses doing a brillient job in difficult circumstances but for patients it's russian roulette.
Of the peole I've known who have died in the last 5 years, every single one has died due to failures & poor service.
The system rewards failure, but worse than that the patient has no control over what happens to them, so if you have a bad doctor, you're dead.

I am not saying that it is perfect, no system is and the way your system is run through insurance companies certainly isn't.
