russia is not ready for a western style democracy yet. putin has moved the country ahead a lot in his term, but there is still a lot of work to be done. it may not be in the best interest of 100% of the population, but if the country wants to survive economically and to continue to grow and prosper, this kind of rule from above is necessary for the time being.
