Splitting YouTube is genius. Each country can bring in advertising dollars that would not ordinarily come from just one YouTube. Advertising will be tailored for a country's language & culture. By having YouTube in different languages, such as French and Italian, means you can reach more people. The more people you reach, the more MONEY you can charge advertisers.
I'm an Aussie, in Australia... I haven't seen an Australian specific YouTube just yet. Perhaps the Americans think that the people of the United Kingdom, don't know how to speak American properly, so they decided to section you off so as not to have to put up with your accents and lack complaints about the weather?

Yes, the division - if there has to be one - should be by language, not country.
It makes sense to divide by language because there's an actual physical reason to make the division: If you don't understand French or Japanese or whatever, then you can't read the text or understand what people are saying.
But doing it by country is imposing cultural divisions. It's already creating weirdness like separate UK and Irish servers but nothing for Australia or Canada?
But, in one sense, they're bringing that confusion on themselves by dividing by a political entity - the UK - so they have to separate the Republic of Ireland out of that, lest cause upset or confusion.
They definitely aren't making things easy on themselves or their users. It's unnecessarily opening up a political can of worms to divide a community by arbitrary political divides.
I mean, should they be starting up a separate "Basque" server from the Spanish one? If they add an Indian or Pakistani server then how are they going to deal with Kashmir? Will that have to have its own server too?
If they add an Isreali server - legitimate, as they speak Hebrew - then are they risking invoking a fatwa on themselves if they don't also introduce a Palestinian server?
But if they do that, won't they offend the Israelis? If Hamas and Fatta go their separate ways then will it have to be further subdivided into "Gaza" and "West Bank" servers?
If Scotland were to gain independence, then would the UK server divide into "Scotland" and "England and Wales" servers?
Will the Swiss server have to be deliberately detached from the other servers, in order to preserve their strict stance of utter "neutrality" from the rest of the world?

I think the Irish one exists simply because Google / YouTube don't want to be accused of "political insensitivity" by just lumping Ireland in with the UK.
Otherwise, there is no real rationale that Ireland gets a YouTube region before Canada and Australia does.
One thing about this new system. It's not working properly.
I'd selected the UK YouTube from the menu but when I clicked on the link in my notification Email to come to this video, it logged me into the Irish YouTube (the Irish flag appeared in the corner).
Weirdly, it then wouldn't let me switch back to either the UK or US using the menu, unless I first went to the home page.
I think this is all a bad move anyway, but if it's going to start doing weird things like randomly logging us all onto the Japanese site and then refusing to switch from it - so we can't understand any of the text because it's all in Japanese - then it's going to quickly become a disastrously bad move.
They certainly aren't making things easier on the users or themselves this way, by introducing yet more ways for it all to go horribly wrong. :D
There's hardly any difference between British and American spelling.
A handful of words have a few letters different. I don't see it as being any obstacle to communication whatsoever (not least because it hasn't been at any point thus far).
Australia and New Zealand tend to generally lean mostly towards using British English.
The American spelling differences were a deliberate "spelling reform" that happened in America. It wasn't any kind of "natural evolution" of the language in different places.
"British English" is really just English - and this is the main English used in most places - and "American English" is the result of the spelling reforms in America.

By all means, provide a "language" option.
Change the "country" menu to a "language" menu and then filter the videos by language.
That would be useful to people who speak other languages.

The Gregg's baguettes are legendary. Not quite as good as Clocks sandwiches/baguettes. We've got one here in Kingston (SW Londonton), it's the best thing ever.

Splitting YouTube is genius. Each country can bring in advertising dollars that would not ordinarily come from just one YouTube. Advertising will be tailored for a country's language & culture. By having YouTube in different languages, such as French and Italian, means you can reach more people. The more people you reach, the more MONEY you can charge advertisers.

I'm an Aussie, in Australia... I haven't seen an Australian specific YouTube just yet. Perhaps the Americans think that the people of the United Kingdom, don't know how to speak American properly, so they decided to section you off so as not to have to put up with your accents and lack complaints about the weather?

The strange image quality is due to the strong back light coming from the window behind you - it's an interesting effect, but maybe not what you really want. The sound quality seems ok to me.

Seriously though, I've been looking around some of the new sites, and they are kind of interesting. On the Italian site, they translate "Views" as "Visualizzazioni", which is about seven syllables longer than it has any right to be.

A peeve of mine would be how the most viewed section has been taken up with soccer, chinese soaps and various cartoons like Yu-Gi-Oh. Having the soaps and cartoons in their own section would be great. Having people check to see if their video clip has already been posted a dozen times would be good too.

Many of my friends from other countries (German Sweden Spain and Japan etc.) all speak English on u tube like u mentioned so i dont buy the language thing as good reason to divide the community. Could it be purely 4 advertising reasons?

They should just have a drop down box for language with "Not Applicable" by default. And maybe have tags for relevance to specific countries (selected via the flag-thing in the corner).

I agree with the language thing, most people I know would go straight for a 'spanish speaking' youtube. Still, I wouldn't want to get locked into some "ghetto youtube" for my own country when there's like 30 others that speak the same language. Sure they can have specific content, but really, I wouldn't watch a buch of politicians bullshitting me on youtube, even if they were local.

And to take the ending a step further, in general, a good indicator of impending bower movements is the discharge of intestinal gas a couple hours before the actual need to do a #2.

Yes, the division - if there has to be one - should be by language, not country.
It makes sense to divide by language because there's an actual physical reason to make the division: If you don't understand French or Japanese or whatever, then you can't read the text or understand what people are saying.
But doing it by country is imposing cultural divisions. It's already creating weirdness like separate UK and Irish servers but nothing for Australia or Canada?

But, in one sense, they're bringing that confusion on themselves by dividing by a political entity - the UK - so they have to separate the Republic of Ireland out of that, lest cause upset or confusion.
They definitely aren't making things easy on themselves or their users. It's unnecessarily opening up a political can of worms to divide a community by arbitrary political divides.

YouTube have previously failed to communicate or understand their audience but this is even more so, as most of us appreciated and adored the whole "web 2.0" concept of being able to mix freely and get to know each other, as if the political divides didn't exist.
Unnecessarily bringing them all back into this mix is a very, very, very unwelcome move, in my humble opinion.

I think its mainly for technical reasons.
Changing the country changes the youtube IP address.
That makes it easier to manage the traffic and improves scalability.
Selecting UK may make youtube faster at peak times.

I think the Irish one exists simply because Google / YouTube don't want to be accused of "political insensitivity" by just lumping Ireland in with the UK.
Otherwise, there is no real rationale that Ireland gets a YouTube region before Canada and Australia does.

One thing about this new system. It's not working properly.
I'd selected the UK YouTube from the menu but when I clicked on the link in my notification Email to come to this video, it logged me into the Irish YouTube (the Irish flag appeared in the corner).
Weirdly, it then wouldn't let me switch back to either the UK or US using the menu, unless I first went to the home page.

I think this is all a bad move anyway, but if it's going to start doing weird things like randomly logging us all onto the Japanese site and then refusing to switch from it - so we can't understand any of the text because it's all in Japanese - then it's going to quickly become a disastrously bad move.
They certainly aren't making things easier on the users or themselves this way, by introducing yet more ways for it all to go horribly wrong. :D

There's hardly any difference between British and American spelling.
A handful of words have a few letters different. I don't see it as being any obstacle to communication whatsoever (not least because it hasn't been at any point thus far).
Australia and New Zealand tend to generally lean mostly towards using British English.

The American spelling differences were a deliberate "spelling reform" that happened in America. It wasn't any kind of "natural evolution" of the language in different places.
"British English" is really just English - and this is the main English used in most places - and "American English" is the result of the spelling reforms in America.
