No, Dick Powell originally played "Richard Diamond" on radio from 1949 through '52. He also owned the series; when he told his wife June Allyson in early 1957 that he was thinking of casting David Janssen in a Four Star TV version of the program, she thought David was all wrong for the part. Powell knew "star quality", though- Janssen might not have matched Dick's wisecracking persona as "Diamond" on the radio, but he was tough, nevertheless.
