I have the old Vanguard LP that this recording is probably from, and I sat up close when he performed the song at an afternoon blues workshop at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 (where the picture may have been taken). It always sends chills up my spine. He was a true master.
thats cos you live in other level, a lower one, with those called "the rats", you and your brothers are just trash, alive trash that will never understand things from our superior court
Did the Grateful Dead steal a part of these lyrics or did they give credit to Skip James? In the Grateful Dead's song, "I Know Your Rider" they use the line "I laid down last night, tried to take my rest. My mind got to ramblin', like a wild geese from the West." but they just altered the words a bit.
i feel some people just dont understand,,, is it cos im older ??????... before you comment on something you know little about ... well dont comment at all....
@GoldenNakai17 I live near Philly but am able to pick up good music from the Princeton University NJ radio station WPBR 103.3.. I think they stream online too
I really don't know how to give this recording justice, you can't re-mix it or re-record it. I know he didn't make money out of it, I don't supose for one moment that's why he wrote it. Here we all are still listening to it, I don't know about the rest of you? but I for one would would have been happy to be remembered for this song
Of all the Blues giants Skip James may be the most intriguing from a psychological standpoint. His relationship with his dad was complex, & it had a profound effect on his musical life. Some of the forces acting upon him must have made aspects of his music better, while some of the forces, together with his own mind, caused big problems, taking him out of Blues music for several decades, preventing him from reaching his full potential. Despite that, his Blues is simply incredible.
a very wise man once told me, "the blues aint hard to understand. every blues song is either about fuckin', or not fuckin'. it's either about how your woman is great, or about how your woman is bad."
@SacredSocietyAP i haven't played a video game for 15 years -maybe the odd one now and again but i think they're mainly for kids....i don't think there is any need to call people morons.. if they are on this page and enjoy skips music then they have good taste and are cool in my book..- people find out about diff kinds of music from lots of different places.. stop being a nazi
@iampunitan I agree with this guy. I am a 19 year old clean cut lookin kid that has been listening and playing the blues since age 9. Im all for free living, no matter where or what you come from, if you share an interest with someone of any kind of character, embrace it.
The entire Ghost World soundtrack is full of amazing music. (Maybe sans the graduation rap and blueshammer :P) Though they left out a terrific Buzzcocks song. Anyway, nobody does this song quite like Skip! Just adore it.
@justhurryupduuuude I think there's a special trait in blues music where certain deliveries are why they're great. Sometimes the song is off key, or a clap is off rhythym or it's a real simple song that anyone could play but there's something about it that makes it great and unique no matter how old or repeated it is.
@GiannisVP hell your from greence that means no cunt listens to you !!! blues if for black people that comment shows your ignorance skip james was from a mixed race family black white and indian so think before you bump your gums , in fact many of the greatest blues men were from mixed backgrounds
@deewilki Hey, KKK bastard, why dont you hung from a brunch? You are not even hair of my dick! The Gospel brought blues! I see a black man up there. You got such a big problem with black people, tyrant(greek word stupid ass, your vocabulary is full of those!)?
@GiannisVP you my son are the racist the gospel did not bring the blues it was part of its constituents with out it the blues would not be what it is but the blues is many things and the greatest blues artist used a plethora of musical influences skip was a mulato , african , with native american blood and his music has all these parts within it your response is quite pathetic realy you are the tyrant RSVP
@deewilki For sure I am not a racist. The way you shift your manners is pathetic. Its so simple. Africans did not have Blues influeses. Gospel was before B.
Because In English you and you(many) is the same thing on writing you did not got right my last comment.
@GiannisVP fuckin hell mate learn to type africans did not have blues influence ok now im not replying to any more of your pish you show your stupidity with your last comment africans did not have blues influencess africans brought the rythems and beats from there homelands and applied them into other forms such as country gosple thus forming the foundations of the blues now fuck off and go read some possibly some lomax stuff and educate your self
Johnny Cash called the theft and re-use of material the Folk Process. And I agree with him. There are just 12 notes in all of music. Odds are nearly total that nothing you play or create is original. Cash created "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" out of an old Irish folk tune. Led Zep did much the same with God knows how many blues songs. Bluesmen swiped from each other and created new things out of what they took. It doesn't bother me, it's just the way things are.
People, if you complain about the way the bluesmen took ideas from other bluesmen and incorporate in their work, you dont understand the blues, noobs.
my favourite blues musician...truly unique and timeless .R.I.P. and a note to all blues fans out there ...go watch the whole 7 movies from "martin scorsese presents the blues" series, and start with "soul of a man" ...you can thank me later :)
@jmrockit, get off it brother; I was just blasting my surprise on the moment...to be causually listening, and hear one of my favorite Robert Johnson lines. It was just disappointing. I "understand the blues" plenty. More than you I'm sure. I know these guys lifted/tributed/stolefrom/"re-worked", what-you-will, all the time. It's ok. But really, Robert Johnson did it a LOT. And most people don't know. I was just pissed right then and left a comment. Sorry for the offense. Shakespeare was worse.
Man if all the music in the world was 100% original with no evidence of any other inspiration there would only be a handful of genres and songs. Saying this guy stole this or this guy stole that is total bullshit.
Man if all the music in the world was 100% original with no evidence of any other inspiration there would only be a handful of genres and songs. Saying this guy stole this or this guy stole that is total bullshit.
I am SO ANGRY to learn Robert Johnson stole is fun Come on in my Kitchen verse "Some joker got lucky, stole her back again" from Skip James. It's such a cancer for me. Like with Led Zeppelin, constantly learning something ELSE they stole from someone else. Of course, RJ fans don't consider it theft. They call it Homage or "re-working" No, it was a young kid stealing other men's songs.
@nairbasirrah Well man there is a difference when you take a vocal or instrumental line and work it into a piece, as apposed to taking a complete song, word for word, note for note; singing and playing it and calling it your own. There is a subtle difference of using four measures, rather than performing Crossroads as your version of a Library of Congress song. Young Bob recorded the first rock and roll instrumental solo on Kind Hearted Woman. He was the first modern day blues man
What tuning is this in, anyone? I'm trying to learn how to play the blues, I really am, but I don't have a teacher or anything. This music is so much more beautiful than anything I hear that's nowadays "music", because I can relate to it. See, with other music, I can't relate, it doesn't mean a thing. I can't relate to big cars and women and money and fancy drinks. But I can relate to melancholy feelings, or sadness. Everyone's felt sad at some point in their life.
@krylon2009 It's in open D-minor, like an open D-tuning but the G-string half a step down. So from low to high: D-A-D-F-A-D. You can find instruction on the tuning here: youtube.com/watch?v=qwQhe5C0TTA&feature=related (Guitar Lesson 1 of 6 Hard Time Killing Floor Blues). Skip's playing was really modal (neither minor nor major). sometimes he left the G string open (D minor) or fretted it at the first fret (D major). Skip also tuned up to E-minor but you might break some strings then!
Guys, just imagine, you may close your eyes and think what was it like when Skip entered the studio, sat down at the chair and started playing that song, the whole universe stopped for these 3 minutes, one of the most remarkable moments in the history of mankind.. oh I think I would have fainted If I saw and heard this!
@arzachelek ur kinda ridiculous man, i mean its a great song i love it but dude its not like some forever history changing event, like when jfk was shot, or when the twin towers fell. get real man
good thing rafealmadferit showed up to tell people who is allowed to be a bigger fan of a song. Woulda been a shame if he just sit back and let people enjoy it.
It's just so amazing, the timing, the combination of culture, society, and an artist with ideas and the availability of an instrument that could be used to express it. Just brilliant.
The devil took my woman left a wandering spirit in the mist of night. Over the dark water screaming daggers of ice, a solitary mind rambling, a sudden fright Where will she go tonight?
oh yes. I.m feeling skip today.

@arzachelek Every note that was played and sung, along with every emotion attached to them was real.
simplethunder 6 months ago

good thing rafealmadferit showed up to tell people who is allowed to be a bigger fan of a song.

MemphisBlueAgain 10 months ago
@MemphisBlueAgain
Where will she go? In the pines, obviously. In the pines where the sun never shines.
(I know, I know, but Leadbelly and Skip James both occupy the same ingenious realm)

"I laid down last night, laid down last night
I laid down last night, tried to take my rest
My mind got to ramblin', like a wild geese
From the west, from the west" ¡fucking GOD!
