  • I just bought the Windham Hill issue on CD from Amazon. I owned the Vinyl and I feel so blessed to get it on CD for half the price I paid for the vinyl!

  • Soulful and haunting. I cling onto it when I need to reflect.

  • I still have the Vinyl and the deep memories associated with this beautiful music. No person, no place or time, just an excursion into those you recall and remember the most while absorbing it. There is a God, and there must be a heaven. This is what I want to hear if and when I ever cross over. Thank you Isham.

  • OMG........Mel, Mel, Mel. Seeing that again takes my breath away. Now I remember why I loved him. I'd forgotten. :/

  • What is sacred is the love that does not measure consequences. And love does not care about the risks. Perfect!

  • I just got it from Amazon for $4.00 last week!

  • John Lock at 3:04!! :O

  • A friend gave me a copy of some songs on an unlabeled tape that had this song on it way back in the 80's.

It haunted me for years until I finally tracked it down.

The beauty of each note just carried me way past whatever movie it had been composed for.

    (I liked the movie.)

Mr. Isham just ain't normal... he is way out there... and beyond!

  • damn that man was sooo f-ing beautiful. still think he is.

  • @WikeddTung DAM RIGHT HE IS

  • Mel Gibson was always more beautiful than his leading ladies!

  • does anyone know where I can watch this movie online?

  • @purplesalad You can get Mrs. Soffel, new, from Walmart dot com for $10.96.

  • It's beautiful... music and the video... I can't stop watching/ listening to it.

    Thank you.

  • loved it..

  • Why did I miss this movie before, seems nice, kinda regret that I watched this now for now I know how it ends;P

  • A beautiful and underated movie by Gillian Armstrong.

Made before Hollywood got to Mel too much.

Track it down and watch it!

  • I still think Mel is hot even today! This movie was so heart breaking, like a romeo & juliet. 2 lovers that were denied being together because of fate

  • Mel looks REALLY young here...

  • The Story , the cast , the soundtrack everything so superb in this movie ! Mel is still one of my favorit actors .

  • If you like this movie then this'll be pretty cool. I was in the house they live in, in this movie just last night, babysitting for these kids. it had many renovations but it was very creepy and cold. i recognize the house from the movie... it's in the Rosedale area ... a place near me. my dad used to live three doors down from this house and he remembers when they were filming it...

  • So i guess your father must have seen Mel Gibson , that's really cool !

  • This whole movie was based on a TRUE STORY. It was the biggest story back a hundred years ago. The movie was very close to what really happened.

    Good movie to watch!!!

    The soundtrack was very moving.

  • What a beautiful video. Very well done, I had tears. Thank you!

  • Love him. I cry at the end every time. He was sooo gorgeous.

  • A masterpiece in script, acting, locations, photography, and music. Ms. Keaton and Mr. Gibson at their theatrical best.

  • whats the name of this movie i need to watch it

  • Mrs. Soffel

  • I just saw this movie today for the first time. I loved the movie and the music, especially this song. I plan to add it to my collection. 5 stars. 0:-)

  • Where can I get this music? All of it?

    The movie? Help.......desperate

  • Amazing movie!

  • It's the kids I feel sorry for....

  • Diane keaton is so cute and mel gibson is so handsome!

  • Diane, you are the best!!!

    Thanks for the movie!

  • Fabulous soundtrack from this album.. Mark Isham at his best ! A slice of the "Golden Years" of Windham Hill artists....

  • Love the music in this. :3

  • especially the music that starts around 1:30 :3

  • Not my favorite actress but i love Diane Keaton in this one. She looks more stuck-up :-)

  • Marvellous movie and music!!!! Perla.

  • I felt in love with this movie for many many years...and it still last...the cast is wonderful, not to forget the fantastic music by Mark Isham...a timeless masterpiece...

  • I loved this movie!

I still think Mel's best work, has been with Aussie directors!

I would have prefered Meryly Streep over Diane Keaton as the female lead though.

    Beautiful film and beautiful soundtrack.

    It is available on DVD!

  • I prefer Jessica Lange. Perla.

  • Yes, she would have been great too!

Diane Keaton always plays Diane Keaton!

  • One of my fave movies...including the music and of course the acting...love the montage...very well done...the love scene is so tender and real....i just love the whole darkly poignent feel ....thanks!!

  • Why won't they re-release this album? It is extremely beautiful, perhaps Mark Isham's greatest work.

  • The Soundtrack was edited by Windham Hill Records:

    Catalog Nr. WH-1041

Album: Film Music - Mark Isham [1985] Music From "Mrs. Soffel"/Music From "The Times Of Harvey Milk"/Music From "Never Cry Wolf"

  • Yes, the music in this video is from that album, but only parts of "Mrs. Soffel" is heard, here. Also, not in the order, that it plays on the album. (Just in case someone has this album and thinks there's another version. There's not, not that I know of, anyway.)

  • En mi coleccion de mas de 30000 canciones instrumentales, Mrs. Soffel - Pittsburgh, 1901 es una de mis favoritas

In my collection of over 30,000 instrumental songs, Mrs. Soffel - Pittsburgh, 1901 is one of my favourites

  • I'm lucky to still own this Mark Isham soundtrack, on it there's Mrs. Soffel

(13:59). 2. The Times of Harvey Milk

(08:32). (the just did a new film about him... and 3. Never Cry Wolf (24:48).

released i 1984 by Windham Hill. get it if you ever see it, it's out-of-print and will probably never be re-issued :-(

  • I'm lucky enough to still have that cd, too, but I've never visited the Allegheny County Courthouse/jail?

I have researched the story quite a bit and must confess I wish I hadn't. I like this version better, though some of the details of the actual character's and chain of events is even more incredible in many ways.

  • The old Allegheny County Courthouse and jail where this was shot is still standing, awesome building, they invested $34 million to convert the former jail into a [Family Law] courthouse.

Was lucky enough to visit it (not as a jailbird lol), walking where they were made me love this movie even more!

  • Thanks for sharing!!! I first heard this Isham piece almost 10years ago and it's still as haunting as the first time I heard it- the video is a master piece as well, wonderfully moving.

  • serbia.I guess you are no where close to that place :(

  • I really want this movie, but I can't find it enywhere!I have like all Mel Gibson movies,I just don't have this one!!Can someone tell me where I can find it?!

  • I saw it in a shop here in my hometown.....where do you come from?????

  • there should be a good remake of this movie -although it was quite good.

  • OH please enough with the silly remakes... You can't get this one any better!

  • nancywallace69

there should be a good remake of this movie -although it was quite good.

OMG stop it people with the lame remakes !!! What Lindsay Lohan and Justin Timberlake with a rap soundtrack?

Leave those classics alone... i.e. Rollerball from Jewison, amongst so many.

  • Yeah, except everyone cheers when Justin shoots Lyndsay in the gut!

  • awesome job on the video!

  • Mel gibson was so handsome in this movie , he's still for me the best actor , and yes this melodie is so beautiful . thanks for this video , great job !!!.

  • One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard...Eres un genio, Mark.

  • This is one of my all time favorite Love Stories! Great job with the compilation, I am so glad you added the poem at the end, I was waiting to hear it, I know it by heart!

  • You did a gorgeous job with the video :)

  • which brother was responsible?

  • I'd have to look around for the region 2 DVD looks like a good viewing for the story.

  • In the film .. what exactly had mel and his brother done ? .. to be deathrow inmates.

  • The Brother's were convicted of killing a grocer during a robbery. The movie starts later with them in prison. A confession of sorts is made during the movie, that only one of the Brother's was responsible.

  • This is what is known as being "impossibly handsome".

  • Mel at his best

  • mel too hot for words! :-P

  • This is one of the greatest movies of all time, a gem of a love story. I could watch it a million times and never tire of it. the chemistry between Keaton and Gibson is inbelievable. Mel and Diane at their very best.

  • anyway Mel Gibson is living legend and very proud we are having him! He have his character!

  • directed by Gillian Anderson... as in Scully Gillian?

lol I can't think of a better example...

  • oops! I wonder if you're the only one who caught my error. Mrs. Soffel was directed by the Australian director Gillian Armstrong. I've corrected it. Thank You!!!

  • Mel Gibson,Diane Keaton movie with an Isham soundtrack. Not too bad.

  • hallo allemaal.

  • Thanks for putting this up. One of my all time favorite movies!

  • You're welcome. It's one of my favorites too.

  • Thanks for posting this. Mark Isham's beautiful score is one of the best I've ever heard in a film. I had the soundtrack years ago, but lost it at some point and now it's out of print.

  • Your welcome. I agree. Whenever I think about this movie, Isham's music is automatically connected to it. I love his other work, but this soundtrack is the one I most associate with Isham.

  • do you have the movie?

what is the real opening theme?

  • I have the movie. In the movie, the opening theme starts just before the "True Story". First, there is the sound of 1901 Pittsburgh's mill works kind of making a poof, poof sound. During that and a bit beyond, an erie type of music maybe 20 seconds plays, then starts the opening piano music, where they show the woman and her kids walking along side the prison.

  • In this video, the girl is playing from the end of the movie's last piano movement when Mrs. Soffel is re-reading Ed Biddle's poem he read to her before the escape. (In the movie) So, in this video, the first and last piano segments are just switched around. When I mixed the music, some of the music was lost in the overlay. I know I've probably confused you more, but I know the movie by heart and everything I hear on the cd I have, is in the movie too.

  • thanks kk, I really don't remember at all...

the only thing I know is that there was a piano theme,

a very simple thing, played by the girl, suppossed played

by her, it's not a concert! just some easy piano background,

that tan, tan,tan,.... tan, tan, tan...,

tan, tan, tan, maybe some very simple ascending arpeggios,

and it is not what sounds in the beginning of your spoiler,

maybe just 20 seconds, the most interesting thing in that

    movie

    damn, I give up!

  • Well, you got my curiosity up, so I just now put the DVD in and you're right. The little girl is playing a beginner's, hesitant piano tune. It is not on the cd.

  • PS: The girl IS playing from the opening piano music. Sorry. Also, you might be thinking of the part where Mrs. Soffel is teaching her daughter how to play the piano and makes a mistake? That's not on the cd. On the cd, they also include the piano part in the end titles where they combine almost all the music as the credits roll.

  • yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!

  • when I tell you about something in the movie but not in the

soundtrack cd, I mean that maybe that music was composed while

doing the movie, and later they put only part on the cd,

it use to happen with many soundtracks, the cd is not the same,

the real soundtrack is much more wider,

  • and after listening now the last notes that the girl is doing

while he reads the last line of the poem at the end of your

spoiler (4:30 to 4:39), I'm convinced that that tan, tan, tan, 3 times

is played in the beginning and just by the right hand, I mean

it's a pure arpeggio, simple and clean

yes, I remember that first scene of Diane with the kids, but

what i'm saying is maybe before, while the initial credits,

before the action, what music is while the initial credits?

  • wow this youtube chat scheme is a shit,

but at least you could tell me that I was not wrong,

I'm really worried about any possible alzheimer,

but I remembered that part very well, they use to play

that movie when I was dining, and I use to walk to

    the kitchen singing tan,tan,tan,... tan,tan,tan...

  • ....

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    ....

    years after (now)

I've searched on google and I only could find

that cd of three songs, but there is not the main

    theme the girl is doing

  • let's see, I remember that movie when it was on TNT classic movies a lot of years ago, so... I remember that in the opening, or.. I'm not sure... some dark images of the prison builiding, and the daughter is playing the piano... she's doing some simple notes... something like arpeggios, very easy to memorize, tan,tan,tan... tan,tan,tan... tan,tan,tan,.... TNT repeated that movie many times so I could memorize that theme, it was very beautiful but now I can't remember :(

that thing is in the movie, for sure

  • amaaaaaazing video,

    thanx alot kkbronson

    thanx

    thanx

do you know something about the piano theme?

there are some few notes... it's a very simple thing, not in the soundtrack cd...,

    just some notes, ...... !!!!

but not what you listen in this resume,

    ...

  • Thank you for the compliment. I'm not sure what you mean by "not in the soundtrack cd".

Lyle Mays does the piano work, although Mark Isham is also listed as doing some piano. Isham is credited for the Synthesizers, Penny Whistle, and Piano.

Perhaps there is another cd? On the one I have, it has three movies: Mrs. Soffel at 13:59 minutes, The Times of Harvey Milk at 8:32 minutes, and Never Cry Wolf at 24:48 minutes. Hope this helps.
