Haven't got the CD to hand, but I can well believe Dianne Warren wrote it, she writes for lots of artists.

Now, if someone heard Desmond Child's version first, they might well give it preference, just like Boo Hewerdine's version of 'The Ship Song' might sound better than Nick Cave's original. Hear the cover first, and you might even overlook Boo copping out on the 'remove your wings' line.

Personally, I think Childs is one of those slightly too earnest singers...

This song is really great. I don't get how come the entire album was so ignored back in the 80s? Madonna could get away with changing sounds and peple call her Reinvention Queen, yet when Cyndi changed from funky "Girls want to have fun" to a much mature sounds, people ignored her and not buying her CDs. It has seriously put me off Warren, and I actually prefer Lauper's version, it's charged with more pensive emotion, the push-and-pull of wanting one thing and feeling another is perfectly pitched with her discarding 'go now' and the self-pitying lyrics of the verses, not to mention the acute production that still tingles with bitersweet regret. I always think this sounds like a Bette Midler ballad
