no it's because the tires a cool and when they touch the concrete at 200miles per hour they get extremely hot in less than a second that's why you see smoke.
the tires are filled with nitrogen....when the aircraft touches down, yes the rubber melts, but nitrogen is released as well which makes up the majority of the "smoke" you see. So you were partially correct.
I think the issue is if you were to fill the tires with air the tires will expand (in the wheel wells) and put stress on the rubber. Also during expansion of a gas there is a release of energy (heat) which would not be good either.
a little thermodynamics will aswer that question. At high altitudes gas expands and thus it releases heat(due to work done) which is not good(last thing u'd want would be commin down with flaming tyres. Nitrogen gas dosent expand much as compared to air and thts y its used.
@sunnyatscot yes they do have air in them but that is the only comparision with them and automotive tyres others than that they are completely different
@sunnyatscot its when an areoplane lands the tyres arnt moving untill they hit the ground and they go from 0 - whatever speed the plane is going that is y they have smoke come up and i think areoplane tyres have air in
No! i'm sure!^^:p It's an A330-200! Air caraibes doesn't have any Boeing, the Air caraibes's a330 lands every day in Martinique and 767's have not winglets: yes, but not a lot! In addition there are corsairFly 747's , A330's and Air france 777's!

nirogen is inside of them...and the white "smoke" emitted on touchdown is not rubber melting, but nitrogen being released.

yea ok still I have douts about that i'm gonna ask a pilot to see if he knows. see ya ;-)
charlieechovictor 2 years ago 2
i was gonna ask does airplane tyres have air in it, or are they just made from rubber?

A good question ! i can't answer your question !

impressive videos u have hear, greatings from your Caribbean neighbours of St Kitts and Nevis

they don't have normal air in it, but special gas... so the tires can take the enormous forces at take off and landing.
but can't tell you what kind of gas...

Thanks Buddy, i was really curious and i coud'nt find the answer elseware :)

nitrogen
Saguaro24 2 years ago 2
Airliner's tires are filled with nitrogen gas. I believe it is because nitrogen will not expand at high altitudes like air.
Saguaro24 2 years ago 3
re @ Saguaro24
yeaa but why would some one want to turn down the landing gear whilst in high altitude ?
sunnyatscot 2 years ago 3

well that make's sense

@sunnyatscot air, but a very thick and strong rubber around.
