@CelesteK It took 8.100 tons of steel and 160 million $ to construct the Fleet Center. No amount of materials or money will ever be able to construct an arena that would be able to live up to the old Boston Garden in the minds of most sports-fans in Boston. The Garden was one of the last historical arenas used in pro-sports built adjacent to the old arena was the Fleet Center on the September 30. 1995 many B's-fans lost their beloved arena and got a state-of-the-art replacement right next door.
The Boston Garden should of never been demolished. The city of Boston could of made such great revenue money had they kept it up as a museum. What could of happened is they could of had the new Boston Garden, mean while leave the old Boston Garden vacant.. then put money towards the buidling in renovating it. Could of even been a training place for the Celtics or Bruins before games at the Fleet Center. I mean honestly the new Boston Garden has nothing on the old one.
thankfully in canada we have the good sense to preserve our temples of hockey. i can't say the same for you americanos. obviously we appreciate the game more.
i live in Los Angeles and i cant stand the fricken Lakers..i was a Celtic fan..what a great place to watch a game..johnny most was a great announcer a total team player
great you once had the boston garden and now you have the shit garden. you should have preserved the old garden as a museum, a landmark or something similar. these buildings have become monuments, they cannot be demolished.
These places are historical landmarks and have near-monument status. They should never be demolished. If they needed a new arena sto badly, they could have preserved Boston Garden and converted it to a basketball museum or something. It's truly a shame. If I was a Celtics fan, I'd never go to their games again.
they shoulda re-built the new 1 to like the old Garden retro like all the Baseball stadiums are now ....I think someday there will be "retro style" Hockey Arena's or @least I think there should be
oh man, that's one of the saddest sights i've ever seen - why did the city of Boston allow this to happen to the greatest basketball arena in history.
Went to a game there in '85 - an amazing place - though it was old, it was clean as a pin, well maintained, not a bad seat in the house and those banners over the court - game atmosphere was sublime - "ladies and gentleman, your World Champion Boston Celtics" - no screaming PA, just organ music, no damned dancers - all about the basketball.
This is one of the first things I saw when I original moved to Boston . . . sitting at North Station, watching them tear down the Boston Gardens. It was surreal to say the least, the only thing more surreal is watching it now, over a decade later, on an internet video.
@ThePhenomm I remember that place being hotter than hell especially when it was packed during a celtics game, but man were there good memories made there.
Fleet Center/TD Garden has been in use for over 15 years now and it honestly doesn't have a scratch of the history the true Garden. The greatest home court advantage there was. No AC and a dead floor that the Celtics studied where the spots were and refused renovation. I mean you're not even allowed to refuse renovation like that anymore....it's just not the same. I miss how unique everything used to be. This was where true legends were born...to tear it down. So sad.
I sorely miss old school New England. Along with Boston Garden and the rebranding of the Hartford Civic Center & loss of the Whalers, places like Ames, Bradlees, Caldor, all of the thriving shopping malls, all the small knit suburbs...in the past 20 years our area has changed massively and a lot of the charm in the little things in life are gone. It's sad as the memories get more distant...someday humanity will have forgotten about it as a whole. Golden times are long gone. Poor society :/
I remember watching many great WWF wrestling matches here at the boston garden back in the early 80s, like when the Hart Foundation face the British Bulldogs or when "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan teamed with the Bushwhackers Many great memories and matches from this lovely arena, kinda like the WWF's second home at the time only to Madison Square Garden. To be honest, this video is kinda hard to watch.
Not only is it a shame that the Garden is gone, but also the West End Elevated Green Line (which you can hear squealing above the street). The area just doesn't feel the same.
@binmai00 Lakers fucking blow. Congrats on getting every whistle during the most important game of the entire post season. We took that championship from you in 2008, with a blow out game. And what did you guys do? Get a shitload of BS calls that gave you just enough space to win. Ray Allen put on the worst 3 pt shooting clinic in history and we still almost beat you guys.
@blacklabel67k Oh well since you like excuses, did you forget in 2008 the Lakers were playing without 2 starters? Trevor Ariza & Andrew Bynum were absent the entire playoffs in 2008. Ray Allen also had the greatest 3 point streak in Finals history in Game 2 and just barely won. So it balances out.
@DiverseLA . Trevor Ariza played in all 6 games of the 2008 NBA finals.3 point shots as of 11/28/2010. Ray Allen will have the most 3 pointers in NBA history before his career is over.#1 Reggie Miller 2,560 6,486 .395 # 2 Ray Allen 2,482 6,260 .396 The C's played gm 7 without their starting center in the 2010 finals(Perkins), got killed on the boards and lost by just 4. L.A. had a 23-8 edge in off rebs and a 53-40 reb edge overall, the team that won the battle of the boards won all 7 games
On one end I'm happy that they got rid of the garden. It was infested by rats, you couldn't see and it was gross. On the other hand, I'm sad.you can fix the rat problem, you can be a little higenic and it had history.
@tkkrupnikas I agree, I saw Aerosmith there New Years Day 1993, Sure there's tons of history but I couldn't believe how much of a dump the place was, you had to climb winding, narrow stairs to the top and then go down to wherever your seats were, and that was assuming you wouldn't have an obstructed view and the seats were wooden relics that must've been salvaged from Fenway Park
Chiller equipment was in a rat infested area, with levers, dials, and gauges that no one had no idea what they were for. The ice surface was smaller than other rinks. Better for us, possibly at home, a definite disadvantage on the road.
Sight lines sucked. If you were too far up or tucked into a corner you couldn't see half the ice / floor. Seats were run behind pillars and those "seats" that you couldn't sit in were always sold.
there is no common decency anymore for heritage buildings anymore they gutted out the old forum now it looks like a piece of crap they turned MLG into a supermarket half arena due to open in 2011 when it comes to heritage buildings nothing matters
no sure whats worse? tearing ti down or what they are doing to Maple leaf gardens in Toronto right now (turning it into a grocery store). yeah, bobby orr scored a series winning goal in the produce section
I remember driving by on 93 when this was going on, it was so weird to look inside the building from the highway after having been in there so many times.
btw.... I love the screaching of the Green Line train that always sounds like the wheels are coming off!
the arena had to be torn down, even though it had history. It was extremly out of date and inadequte and not up to standerds, there were bad locker rooms no A/C and the place had rats. its really was falling apart.
Professional sports have went to GARBAGE. Theirs so much history there in that building. It's all about money, this arena, bulls arena (jordan, pippin, rodman played in) old yankee stadium. I cant believe they would get rid of them.
actually Jordan and Pipen played in the current home of the bulls; united center, they moved in there after their first dynasty, and then pipen and jordan came back to play in the new arena.
Even though this is kinda off topic i noticed people talking about it so i thought i would throw in my two cents. Yes, Fenway Park is historic and as a lot of great memories. But lets be honest, its in pretty bad shape. I don't think they would ever tear it down, but there will come a day when they will need to build a new one. In which case they would probably just turn it into a museum or something to that extent.
Sad day in sports history. Living in Massachucetts, I did bug (bribe) a construction worker and got a few momentos. I hope they never do that to Fenway, which would be a crime against sports, but I have a feeling its days are numbered. What a sad day that will be!
P.S.- Hated them, but also hated to see the old Forum in Montreal go...another shrine gone to mans greed.
5inhole What momentos did you get? I remember living in lowell and my wife and i would drive to the garden and park int he back. Have a few in the bar there. Cant remember the name of the bar. Horseshoe? Holyground.
@RobertFosterMullen I got the top part of a 1st balcony chair and a few other momentos. The coolest thing was-remember the shots for Bruins, shots for whoever was the opponent? I got the front glass of that!
@jayblob716 It would be a great idea to tear down Fenway. Fenway is an ugly stadium, it's old, and left field is too short. A new stadium with luxury boxes and large LCD screens is needed. Preferably a dome style that opens & closes, and has swimming pools like the Arizona Diamondbacks. An astro-turf field would be better too since it requires less maintenance and would save money.
@jayblob716 im a detroit native... fenway and tiger stadium in detroit opened the exact same day and they tore Tiger down like it was just another building in the city. Absolutely make me sick......
@icemanj12 Yea its disgusting. If you don't appreciate the past, how can you care about the future? One of the reasons the red sox are so popular is because they play at one of the oldest ball parks in existence. We love it, we have minitiature fields designed just like it for wiffleball and such. The goalie on my hockey team has the fenway painted on the back of his helmet, its pretty sick.
@jayblob716 They can't, its a landmark. So Fenway, will last until it disintegrates into dust. Besides, if they even tried, all of Red Sox nation would disown the team, so I don't think they will pull a stupid attempt to get rid of Fenway Park anywhere in the foreseeable future.
@StilezC hey retard, no its not. They were talking about tearing it down a few years ago, but decided they'd rather make renovations to it instead to keep up with modern technology. The boston garden was a historical land mark too, it was about 70 years old. Why do you think fenway wouldn't get torn down if the garden could? Dumb ass.
@jayblob716 it takes on click of the mouse and a few words in a google search. Its a Historical landmark and when something is considered a historical landmark in Mass, they do not get rid of it, or tear it down. how about you go back to 5th grade and learn sum more and come up with some creative insults instead of the most common "dumb ass" and using mine, "retard". As I said, Retard. Fenway will never be town down, it will be there for as long Boston is there.
@StilezC Yup dude you're right, you're totally right, you're super awesome. If its considered a historical landmark, why would they have considered knocking it down? Just a bad tasting joke? I stated a simple truth, if they knocked it down I wouldn't watch another red sox game. Did I say, "OMG fenway park is going to be torn down!"? No I didn't. I stated a simple hypothetical scenario and you got all butthurt over it, chill bro, chill.
@jayblob716 i didnt get bumb hurt about it. just makin sure a friend didnt make another silly mistake. and you cant get all bitchy just cuz they might tear down fenway. yankees fans still watch the games with there new stadium, no reason us sox fans should stop watching with a new stadium either.
@StilezC Yea but they preserved old yankee stadium and turned it into a museum. That would be fine with me, I wouldn't care if the Sox moved into a new stadium. I am just saying that I would be devastated if they tore down fenway, theres just way too much history there to consider it.
@jayblob716 dont worry, fenway will never be torn down. and if it was, it would be completely stripped. i mean stripped. it would be the metal frame left when they take it down. all the seats, the wood, the grass, the bricks, hell, they probaly would break the wall into pieces and sell it.
I doubt fenway will be domlished anytime soon, the thing is the Garden was not up to par with other arenas in the times, it had problems with A/C, locker rooms, rodents, etc... Also small seating capactiy. Fenway however dosent have to worry about A/C, obviously, and with all the new editions they have put in over the years, I doubt they will have them all go to waste. Fenway is actully up to par now with all the other stadiums, they are doing a nice job with that.
they should've just preserved this building. so many great memories. my idol larry bird played in this building! so as other great celtic players and their moments!
its too bad you never got to go. I could try to explain how intense it got with 15,000 sweaty fans hovering over the ice/court. We used to go the day of the game and get $15 dollar obstructed view seats and just stand in the back of the rafters near the beerstand. Ahh sweet memories of getting drunk in the Garden! Seen many big games there.
I went to the Garden for the WWF Survivor Series in November '93 (got to see the late Owen Hart, Bret Hart, Undertaker, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels) and then another WWF event in '95. I wished I was older so I would have seen The Who, Queen, Pink Floyd (especially their 1977 performance with the pig and pyro (which was off limits I heard)), Led Zeppelin, Rush, Styx, Bob Seger and Jethro Tull at the Garden (at least The J Geils Band's 1975 and Bob Seger's 1980 shows were captured on live albums).
I only went to one Celtic game here, It was the game the night after Reggie Lewis first collapsed. I remember the demo too, seeing the Morse Diesel sign. NASDI??? They were around back then too??? They're everywhere!!! The old Garden, Hingham Shipyard, The chemical explosion on the North Shore, South Shore Plaza, they take down everything!!!
Sorry for your pain. Can you actually see the seats you sat in? It hurts me, as a Kansan, to see this place torn down. Something should be preserved there.
Memories anyone? Seeing the garden, hearing the green line squeak through above causeway, near the artery traffic, heading into halftime for a few slices.
I know Boston needed a new facility....but it always seems such a shame to see a piece of sports history being lost forever. I had always hoped to one day see the bruins play in the old gardens and see the the house that Orr built in his hey day...but unfortunatley it never worked out for me.....my loss!
they used to do a great shot of the Garden before big games from the front of the green line trolleys when it was still elevated. Anyone know a post to a clip from that?
Former Bruins GM Harry Sinden couldn't bare looking at this view, so he purposely altered the route he took driving to work every day. Say what you want, Harry loved hockey and the Bruins, and everything their traditions represented. I'll drink to THAT!
Reminds me of the Winnipeg arena during it's last days! A buddy and me snuck into the Arena just after the North Wall had come down! Video I took looks just like the footage posted in this video! Certainly a sad thing to see...
yeah i was born in 94 so i never went to the old garden. It was demolished in November 97. I heard it had horrible ventilation and views, but it's still sad to see a place with such history get knocked down.
that be like taking down FENWAY park-that will go soon like the house that Ruth built-AND SHA-MEET THE THE METS-WHAT FOND MOMERYS WE HAVE HERE THE CUB'S -BACK,IN,THE-DAY-WHO-NEED A TIX-GET,THE-OLD-LADY,COOKING.DOGS

@icemanj12 Yea its disgusting. If you don't appreciate the past, how can you care about the future? One of the reasons the red sox are so popular is because they play at one of the oldest ball parks in existence. We love it, we have minitiature fields designed just like it for wiffleball and such. The goalie on my hockey team has the fenway painted on the back of his helmet, its pretty sick.
jayblob716 1 year ago
@jayblob716 They can't, its a landmark. So Fenway, will last until it disintegrates into dust. Besides, if they even tried, all of Red Sox nation would disown the team, so I don't think they will pull a stupid attempt to get rid of Fenway Park anywhere in the foreseeable future.
SickVicious996 1 year ago
@jayblob716 hey retard, fenway is a historical landmark. it cant and will never be taken down.
StilezC 10 months ago
@StilezC hey retard, no its not. They were talking about tearing it down a few years ago, but decided they'd rather make renovations to it instead to keep up with modern technology. The boston garden was a historical land mark too, it was about 70 years old. Why do you think fenway wouldn't get torn down if the garden could? Dumb ass.
jayblob716 10 months ago
@jayblob716 it takes on click of the mouse and a few words in a google search. Its a Historical landmark and when something is considered a historical landmark in Mass, they do not get rid of it, or tear it down. how about you go back to 5th grade and learn sum more and come up with some creative insults instead of the most common "dumb ass" and using mine, "retard". As I said, Retard. Fenway will never be town down, it will be there for as long Boston is there.
StilezC 10 months ago
@StilezC Yup dude you're right, you're totally right, you're super awesome. If its considered a historical landmark, why would they have considered knocking it down? Just a bad tasting joke? I stated a simple truth, if they knocked it down I wouldn't watch another red sox game. Did I say, "OMG fenway park is going to be torn down!"? No I didn't. I stated a simple hypothetical scenario and you got all butthurt over it, chill bro, chill.
jayblob716 10 months ago
@jayblob716 i didnt get bumb hurt about it. just makin sure a friend didnt make another silly mistake. and you cant get all bitchy just cuz they might tear down fenway. yankees fans still watch the games with there new stadium, no reason us sox fans should stop watching with a new stadium either.
StilezC 10 months ago
@StilezC Yea but they preserved old yankee stadium and turned it into a museum. That would be fine with me, I wouldn't care if the Sox moved into a new stadium. I am just saying that I would be devastated if they tore down fenway, theres just way too much history there to consider it.
jayblob716 10 months ago
@jayblob716 dont worry, fenway will never be torn down. and if it was, it would be completely stripped. i mean stripped. it would be the metal frame left when they take it down. all the seats, the wood, the grass, the bricks, hell, they probaly would break the wall into pieces and sell it.
StilezC 10 months ago
@StilezC heh, I could see it now. "Fenway park old used toilet paper straight from the bathroom. $50 starting bid"
jayblob716 10 months ago
@jayblob716 lmao, thats great. glad to see we made up our differences.
StilezC 10 months ago
@StilezC Yea! I love you.......
jayblob716 10 months ago
@jayblob716 Big Green Monster=Unfair advantage for the Sox.Its hard to get homers.
yellowfish32 6 months ago
@yellowfish32 The wall itself isn't very far away. In fact, the wall makes it easier to homer if you're one of those pop-up guys.
Coastergeekperson04 6 months ago
when they brought the forum down it was one of the saddest days in my life...and i hope it never happens to fenway
themike56 2 years ago 2
I doubt fenway will be domlished anytime soon, the thing is the Garden was not up to par with other arenas in the times, it had problems with A/C, locker rooms, rodents, etc... Also small seating capactiy. Fenway however dosent have to worry about A/C, obviously, and with all the new editions they have put in over the years, I doubt they will have them all go to waste. Fenway is actully up to par now with all the other stadiums, they are doing a nice job with that.
navymmw 2 years ago
actually there plan of a new Fenway park but its undecided if the statium will be built
ChevyRoll48 1 year ago
haven't they had those plans since like 2000?
navymmw 1 year ago
they should've just preserved this building. so many great memories. my idol larry bird played in this building! so as other great celtic players and their moments!
GabJero 2 years ago
It would have sucked up too much money, there is no way they could have kept that open.
Not a Bruins fan, but I totally understand where you are coming from bro, lots of great games in that building for sure.
mrceebees14 2 years ago 2
well they can probably just open that for tours and make money off of it hehe
GabJero 2 years ago
Would not have worked.
They should do that with Maple Leafs Gardens.
mrceebees14 2 years ago
@GabJero But ask yourself as a taxpayer would you want to see your tax dollars going into an aging faciility nobody uses?
jennifersman 1 year ago
@jennifersman thats whats happening to the pyramid so why not preserve historical stadiums in other cites that deserv to remain standing

i went to garden when the Celtics lost to the bullets. man i remember that long ramp to walk up.
shaolinlueb 2 years ago
As a little kid I mainly only remember the ramps lol. And it was too loud for me but I loved the Bruins games there.
gobruins1211 2 years ago
i never went there (only 18) i wasnt old enough to go to a game.
chevyjeffgordon 2 years ago
its too bad you never got to go.
4porka 2 years ago
I went to the Garden for the WWF Survivor Series in November '93 (got to see the late Owen Hart, Bret Hart, Undertaker, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels) and then another WWF event in '95. I wished I was older so I would have seen The Who, Queen, Pink Floyd (especially their 1977 performance with the pig and pyro (which was off limits I heard)), Led Zeppelin, Rush, Styx, Bob Seger and Jethro Tull at the Garden (at least The J Geils Band's 1975 and Bob Seger's 1980 shows were captured on live albums).
floydgenesisnut 2 years ago
@floydgenesisnut You forget Aerosmith's performances were preserved on their Pandora's Box set
jennifersman 1 year ago
only game i ever saw there was by the harlem globetrotters in 1993 when i was six...wish i had seen a celtics game while it was still around
bstnsportsfan3 2 years ago
I spent many awesome nights sitting behind a 4 foot wide concrete pillar at that place!
Never set foot in whatever they are calling that soulless shell they have there now.
abark 2 years ago
I only went to one Celtic game here, It was the game the night after Reggie Lewis first collapsed. I remember the demo too, seeing the Morse Diesel sign. NASDI??? They were around back then too??? They're everywhere!!! The old Garden, Hingham Shipyard, The chemical explosion on the North Shore, South Shore Plaza, they take down everything!!!

I can remember being 5 or 6 and driving by on 93 and seeing it like that, sad that the only thing I saw in there was Disney On Ice

my heart hurts..... when i see the seats where me and my father sat at my 2nd game at the garden
sematic1 2 years ago
Sorry for your pain. Can you actually see the seats you sat in? It hurts me, as a Kansan, to see this place torn down. Something should be preserved there.
huskyjerk 2 years ago
never got see a game in that building biggest regret of my life!!!!
asham70 2 years ago
Memories anyone? Seeing the garden, hearing the green line squeak through above causeway, near the artery traffic, heading into halftime for a few slices.

I have to admit, seeing this makes me feel like my heart is being ripped out.

godwhyisthistaken 2 years ago
Really sad... I went there as a kid and sat in the obstructed view seats in the balcony with my dad. There will never be another stadium like it.
brian112381 2 years ago
I loved watch Bruins games there .... nothing like it now.
jedt338 2 years ago
why couldnt they keep the old place and upgrade it a bit like they did with fenway!!!
tom01757 2 years ago
I loved the Garden same as I love Fenway but it was time to move on.

i think its harder to renovate arenas than stadiums

It is the same as letting a museum burn.....

MyRey619mysterio 2 months ago
I know Boston needed a new facility....but it always seems such a shame to see a piece of sports history being lost forever. I had always hoped to one day see the bruins play in the old gardens and see the the house that Orr built in his hey day...but unfortunatley it never worked out for me.....my loss!
GTM57 2 years ago
they used to do a great shot of the Garden before big games from the front of the green line trolleys when it was still elevated. Anyone know a post to a clip from that?
KelDOTMa 2 years ago
I went to 3 Bruins games in the old garden..unfortunately I was to young to remember them...
GunsNRevolvers2 2 years ago
Former Bruins GM Harry Sinden couldn't bare looking at this view, so he purposely altered the route he took driving to work every day. Say what you want, Harry loved hockey and the Bruins, and everything their traditions represented. I'll drink to THAT!
OrrCountry 2 years ago
@OrrCountry Harry Sinden's only problem was that he was old school to a fault.

@ta4586 That's why i don't want to see a Bruins game in the new TD Banknorth Garden if I ever do visit Beantown.
landrykkb 1 year ago
Reminds me of the Winnipeg arena during it's last days! A buddy and me snuck into the Arena just after the North Wall had come down! Video I took looks just like the footage posted in this video! Certainly a sad thing to see...

you gotta admit, td banknorth garden looks nice too.....then again i was born in 1995 so.....
when was this taken
kingmister9 3 years ago
yeah i was born in 94 so i never went to the old garden. It was demolished in November 97. I heard it had horrible ventilation and views, but it's still sad to see a place with such history get knocked down.
