Ah, last but not least...when Forest of the Amazon was recorded, Bidú Sayão had already left the stage for two years. In an inteview, she said that she did Forest off the Amazon because she could say "no" to Villa-Lobos and he was dying of cancer. I have a Forest of the Amazon long-playing authographed by her in a visit she did to Rio de Janeiro in the late 70' ties, I think. It is a treasure for me. From Brazil, JAL

You are right. Villa-Lobos, whose 50th anniversary of death was 5 days ago, has got recognition but deserved much more. He's in every way equal to Stravinsky, Prokofiev and all the greatest 20th century composers. His importance to Brazilian music is essential, not only in Classical Music, but also in popular genres like MPB and bossa nova and also in dozens and dozens of Brazilian folk songs he set to piano and vocal songs. His Bachianas Brasileiras is a work of genius as very few others.

His Bachianas Brasileiras are very famous abroad (I don't know if more in Europe or in the USA, though), but unfortunately his abundant and varied work is little known. Some pieces are as amazing as the Bachianas, like his Choros and symphonic poems, besides his simple but enchanting songs. It's a pity people, especially in the Americas, don't get to know this who was IMO (not only IMO, I must say) the best composer the Americas ever had (with all respect due to Copland, Barber or Gershwin).

É, mas devo dizer que ela não cantou bem, porque ela cantou de uma forma mais simples, praticamente sem variação e sem ir muito para os agudos e para os graves. Ou seja, foi um "genérico" da canção, não considero isso cantar bem. Mas concordo que ela também não fez isso com a pose de "eu sou a nova Bidu Sayão". Mesmo porque ela estaria louca se tivesse pretendido isso! hehehe

Yes! Perfect comment! What I discovered here comparing so many fab singers is that Bidu had a delicate approach to the music that seems to be very rare. My aunt (now 84) heard Lilly Pons in Rio in the 40´s and says that Lilly also sung in an angel-like way...
