Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne were songwriters, very good songwriters !! They never set out to write music for friggin Dr Who!!..Yes Lynne was commisioned to write the soundtrack to the God awful movie `Xanadu` but im sure he`s got over that by now...Check out the film `Boogie nights` the Roy Wood penned `Feel too good` features or check out `Heartbeat` which features `Flowers in the rain`...another Roy Wod song..or `Life on Mars` which features `See my baby Jive`..Grammatically correct....i hope x
CONTINUED-->Pardon my grammatic goofs...But as I was saying, Jeff Lynne may hang out in bars with Ringo Starr. He also made 2 great albums with other star(R)s, Tom Petty, Gorge Harrison, Bob Dylan & ROY ORBISON. Some of which had songs that Lynne was featured as lead singer!). The man did great stuff with 2 Beatles. I've pointed out Lynne's pretty darn good career. I'll open to hear from anyone about Woods famous/often played songs that get featured in Dr.WHO & other shows.
I've heard maybe 2 song by Wood outside the Move aside from stuff people(not radio or TV) had to show me. OfCOURSE Wood is a genius! But I don't hear his music in many different movie(yes, Xanadu was a awful flop. But 'Don't Walk Away' , 'All Over The World', 'Im Alive', and to be fair, Lynne's remake of 'Xanadu' are music I here OFTEN. Lynne's Music is feature on 'Doctor Who' and in a various commercials. WE(this includes you & I) don't here Wood's stuff in populars circles, do we. MORE-->
Hey Matshoppahulle...Get a grip... so See my baby jive and Angel fingers are quite forgettable...i think not...Roy Wood is a Genius...and recently awarded many accolades by his piers, unlike Mr Lynne...who just hangs around bars in LA with Joe Walsh and Ringo Starr...so lets get to the instantly forgettable ELO no1 with Olivia newton john....Hot man...hot...although i do agree ELO produced shit after `Out of the blue`...Keep the faith my mate x
in reply to JeffELOLynne...wizzard had a string of hits from 1972-75, also Woods solo career spawned many hits including 2 criticly acclaimed albums `Boulders and Mustard`...Wizzard having 2 number 1`s in the form of `see my baby jive and angel fingers` they did not need olivia newton john to achieve these chart toppers unlike ELO with they`re only no1 hit Xanadu...nuff said i think
When I first got into ELO I bought a Move greatest hits....hated it. Thought it was lightweight and poppy. Only now discovering the later, bluesier, rockier Move. In my humble opinion Jeff brought a much heavier influence to the Move which was an improvement. I guess that Roy is singing his own composition here and I'm guessing that the competition was doing them both a lot of good.
Interesting, this must be a Beat Club outtake as this was never part of the original episode (they had not finished chroma-keying it as it is black in the background). I would guess that this was one of the last Move appearances. Apart from Bill Hunt being on keys instead of reeds, Richard Tandy being on guitar rather than keys, you have the original ELO line up.
Crazy seeing Richard Tandy playing guitar here and Roy playing bass and ? playing piano cos later Richard played bass for ELO then moved onto keyboard.
Richard played bass for ELO, I thought he went straight to keys as Bill Hunt played french horn. I guess that was while Roy was still in the band overdubbing oboes and before Michael DeAlberquerque.
Not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me :-) Are you saying that's Bill Hunt on piano?
Richard played bass on the 1st ELO album..according to Bevs Biog he switched to keyboards when they decided they wanted to try out the then new(ish) moog on the 2nd album. I wish I could play ONE instrument as good as any one of them. But a roomful of people so good on a variety of instruments that they can just chop and change? Brilliant
The flip-flopping of musicians between the Move-ELO-Wizzard transition is enough to make one's head spin. If I am not mistaken, Bill Hunt did go to Wizzard when Wood left and was re-joined by Rick Price. That might have been when Tandy went to keys and DeAlberquerque came in.
Well,I can't find anything of them I'm afraid. I like Jeff indeed, but not everything he did was good(his solo album was no good, for instance>>>) I see you have a great taste. You should look for Duncan Browne(Metro) at youtube,it's really a treasure of GREAT music. Have a nice summer!
Another GEM...how on earth do these things suddenly turn up after..what...38 years?! I have been an ELO/Move fan for most of my life and have never even heard much less seen this one! Thanks again for posting and making my day.
I know, I have been searching the keywords "The Move" on YouTube for months, probably dozens of times, and I am just seeing this absolute jewel. thank you. great to see/hear this version of The Move playing live., sounding tight. Can someone tell me EXACTLY what songs were played live on the Beat Club? Is there possibly another tune out there we haven't seen yet? I have already seen the other treasures.
As wonderfully proficient as Roy was on a number of instruments (the guitar, as you correctly noted), the cat was an absolute MONSTER on bass. Check out the entire Message From the Country album for proof.
richard tandy was there already hahaha on guitars, ultra cool video thanks a lot pal

I preferred The Move after Jeff joined. The songs got a little more grungy.

@davo7461 So having no. 1 hits means it is great music. I think their 2 number 1 are quite forgettable.
ELO made some great albums that have stood the test of time, but not after "out of the blue" when they also started making forgettable songs.
The Move made som great ones too.

You're right about that. And to add to the confusion, Hugh McDowell left ELO with Roy for Wizzard but later came back!

He was never a member exactly but helped The Move in some performances
like Bill Hunt here in piano. Richard Tandy was also in some Move recording sessions

The Move makes ELO and Wizzard sound lame by comparison.
moorlock2003 2 years ago
Agreed. Though both bands have some fun hits if you snoop around.

ELO was god,Wizzard is very weak. The Move has some nice songs, especially with Jeff Lynne.

Jeff Lynne has alwayd admired guitar playing by Richard Tandy.
Understandable cos in the opinion of Jeff
Richard was the second important when ELO music was created.
That doesn´t mean that Richard Tandy would be a bad guitarist.
FinnMove 2 years ago
Yeah,Tandy is certainly the second guy. Third:Bev Bevan,Fourth:the 2 bassists
