  • we proud of you.ustad

  • Khar ahang mordar seh , kho, khar awaz e pateh sho!

    The legend.

  • my GOD, this song/music is awesome! and his voice is mervelous!

sad that not too many people listen to this kind of music :P

  • anyone know the name of those 2 instruments that the guys in the background are playing?

    thanks for any help :P

  • The background accompaniests are playing the tanpura which is a four string instrument that plays two notes depending on the rag. For this particular rag HEM Kalyan is tuned to PSSS. The instrument Ustad is playing is called a Swarmandal. This is a western instrument called Autoharp and it's been integrated in Indian classical music not too long ago just like harmonium.

  • thanks for the kind reply. i'm looking into getting one soon :P now that i know the name, i can search for it.

many thanks, and we all appreciate all the video's you are posting! if it werent for you, i would not have been able to listen to such a master!

  • beshak sartaj e mosiqi. wow

  • Well! you guys are too good!! I guess if you know music, you should know these things..I love Ustad's music for his lyrics and Ustad's use of Ustad Baidel's poetry..No one comes close to him for chosing the right poems for all his compositions..He will be missed "the true tressure of humanity" Thanks for uploading

  • Thank you for posting the video. Ustad was one of the best in our country. It is so sad to see so many great people are gone. May Allah reward him the Jannat inshallah

  • Uncommon raga!!! Wah Wah Ustad!

These old melodies (Hem Kalyan, Khem Kalyan) are rare among classical vocalists but Ustad Sarahang presents it a special beauty. Between "Shyam Kalyan" and "Hem Kalyan" the main difference is in "Thaat". "Shyam Kalyan" based on "Thaat Kalyan" and "Hem Kalyan" is based on "Thaat Bilawal". The characteristic of "Hem Kalyan" is the usage of "Mandra Saptak" where tonal focus is on notes (S, P' D' P' S)...

  • You are absolutely correct. Also the main difference is the additional use of teevra madham and nishad in Shyam Kalyan. Shyam Kalyan is an Audav Sampooran jati raga vs. Hem Kalyan which is a Shadav Shadav jati raga. Good educational comment. Thanks

  • Hem Kalyan uses the nishad but in a very weak manner. You can hear Sarahang touch a few times on approach to taar Sa.

  • Shyam Kalyan is a mix of Kamod and Yaman with a few extra touches of its own.

Hem Kalyan is mix of Kamod, a bit of Hameer and a few touches of its own.

  • Hum, don't know. I think even though these ragas use the notes of Yaman, Kamod, and Hameer, the feelings brought through their own phrases are nothing like Yaman, Kamod, or Hameer. If it was yaman and kamod, it would be Mishra Kamod. The phrases and feelings in these ragas are way too unique to be mishra.

  • Well the term "mishra" means something different to what you have used here. "Mishra" is a term used for thumri-ang ragas such as Bhairavi or Khamaj etc. and in that context it is when performers add vivadi swaras to the main scale of the raga.

  • In thumris, one can add notes that are not usually found in the scale of a raga or one may add little phrases from another raga in which case the raga performed will be deemed Mishra. However, these additions are at the performers discretion and are not set as the 'rules' of the raga.

  • What I mean when I say that Hem Kalyan is a mix of Kamod and Hameer for example is not in the "mishra" sense. I mean it in the 'jod raga' sense. "Jod" ragas are 'compound' ragas that take phraseology from two or more ragas. Other examples are Jogkauns , Kaunsi Kannada, Miyan Malhar etc. These ragas develop angs (themes) from their respective parts.

  • Kamod is in the main a mix of Shudh Malhar ang and its own signature phrase, M R P (Malhar)+ G M P G M R S.

    Hem Kalyan uses the the Kamod 'ang' with the addition of some phrases from Hameer and its own signature. G M R S and G M P G M R S (Kamod), S G M D P (Hameer) and S P' D' P' S (its own signature).

  • Shyam Kalyan uses the Kamod phrases G M P G M R S and M R P and also uses Kalyan ang phrases such as R m P, m D P etc.

Notice that these 'jod' ragas have very 'inflexible' rules, unlike the 'mishra' ragas.

  • You are absolutely right that both Hem Kalyan and Shyam Kalyan have distinctive 'airs' which sets them apart from the ragas they are derived from but it still stands that they are related to certain ragas.

  • thanks for all your very educational comments and clarifications. as usual i enjoy your comments. the term mishra is not limited to just thumri anga ragas. I have heard mishra darbari where the performaner uses an asavari pharase for emotional effect. But it's not a jod raga becuase he is not mixing the two ragas. In this situation, it is considered mishra because it's a mix. The term mishra in hindi means mix. You are right jod raga are compound or mixture of two ragas.

  • wow. i am a musician and i love ustad sar ahang, and i even have performed some of his songs, but i don't know anything about classical music. i wish i had some outlet for learning all this that you guys know.

  • most of the ustads are in India and/or Pakistan, if you want to learn from the best :P

  • This just beautiful. Thanks so much for posting.

This is not raag Shyam Kalyan, however. This is a very rare but quite beautiful raag called Hem Kalyan.

Not many people sing this lovely but difficult raag so it is fantastic to hear it in the voice of the legendary Ustad.

    Keep up the good work.

  • you are absolutely right. this is hem kalyan. SRS PD SGMP GmRS phrases are used in Shyam Kalyan except in Shyam kalyan tevra madham is used in the arohie. thanks for your great feedback. I will change the title

  • Indeed Hem Kalyan and Shyam Kalyan do share some phrases, as you have mentioned.

    Thanks for changing the title.

  • Thanks Zekria jan for uploading such uncommon ragas!
