  • cette chanson est dans la bande annonce du film marie antoinette de sophia coopola J'ADOOOOORE

  • 2 chords , what magic !

  • I think this is my favorite version of the song, I like that its a little faster then other versions. OKSauceOK, your video goes so well with the song.

  • Fantastic brought back memories of our 6th form common room. Despite being a headbanger I love this and for the single which was in a thick gold cover.

  • Lovely

  • You just don't see quality like this anymore.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • :) :( its that kinda morning. But this is helping.

  • Perfect to start another creative work day:) Damn I really like this

  • A great post. Really beautiful:)

  • I think that this video is the soul of the eighties and of new wave movement. Let's all watch indie videos;they're all inspirated by MASTERPIECES like this.I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hello music theory people!

Could somebody correct me if this is wrong? :

This song is written in key signature of C major and is basically just

a I to IV chord progression? thanks.

    P.s I love this song

  • @BlackEyeDog012 That's pretty much all there is to it lol! They weren't great innovative musicians but wrote brilliant songs!

  • Woah, awesome job. Love the interactions with the girl, and how she expressed emotions. Fantastic combination with color, B&W and filters.

    Simply marvelous. Thanks for sharing!

  • Nice filming,where is it?

    super8 rocks

  • whose the girl on the video

  • To me it looks more than 20 years old (from the cars). But I love it, the analogue qualities and it matches the song (which I have known for 20 years) very well. Fine work.

  • one of my favorites songs

  • This is awesome.

  • This is awesome.

  • thank you for merging this song with your video - it's epic.

  • the 7 people that didnt like this video must have mental problems..

  • Very well shot piece and i do love this song but prefer jds live version:P

  • Love the song and love the video too! :)

    Great job!

  • my favorite song ever.

    therefore, the best video ever.

  • Super niceness. Well done!

I do hope you can re-transfer the video or simply stretch it and redub the sound. Dead easy in any video editor. Would improve things 100%. Actually, I would do it for you.

  • Awesome, I think that time has actually given the lyrics more power, especially, combined with the video it gives a sense of the past remaining constant in the wake of the present.

  • @bobby58585

    Slow down

  • This is amazing...so deep and full of emotional. Nothing like analog.

The girl is quite beautiful too ;)

  • Wonderful!!

    It gaves me emotions!!

    Thanks!

  • 'two chords just two chords' ! ..........so simple and yet so affective ,what magic !

  • Top video seems this track was made for rough grainy building shots and the greyer they look the better!

  • I think I posted way ago, but I don't mind doing it again: Good video! It's beauty really does the song justice. Thanks for uploading.

  • i love this video! thqanks for posting (:

  • Amazing work!

  • Really well made :) My Dad died on this day in 1990 when i was 17... I'm watching this to remember him 20 years later. I Love You Dad! Amen. Thanks for this experience via your beautiful video/song.

  • Love the bleakness of the landscape , goes so well with the song , brilliant work thankyou

  • man i love the eightiesness of this vid. amazing.

  • Dude, all I can say is THANK YOU for posting this! You have allowed me to take a stroll down memory lane. The effects on this are really cool. Thank you again!

  • timeless

  • Check out Atlantic Stereo (this profile) for a cover of Joy Division's "Ceremony." Listen and enjoy.

  • hi this the robin you are talking about, the director and creator of this apparently loved video which we shot in the eighties! just found it, can't believe this is on here, tony get in touch. i'm just touched by the great comments

  • love this

  • This is Brilliant!

  • Great video. Loved it. :)

  • Beautiful video for one of new orders amazing song. Thanks for this; really hits a nostalgiac vein when the world was still mysterious and full of promise.

  • nicely done!

  • wonderful excellent video- except i noticed the speed is slightly too fast-- please repost with slower speed on the song if you can, thank you

  • with your sense of music and flow and structure and timing, you could make a drugstore run for toothpaste seem like a life-changing epiphany.

  • Great video.... goes well with the music and all the sights, colours and just the whole ambience, so easily could have been used for original if filmed that little bit earlier in the 80,s.

Also could not help myself in thinking of ian up there right now, god bless and yes we do think of you always.

  • Fantastic video, seems to fit perfectly with the songs sentiments....however,would go better with the much slower, original release of this,1981.

  • @077glenn , this version of the song is the original from the 7" single. the version on 'substance' we all know and love was recorded a few months later and released as a more successful single. this version actually does not have gillian playing. i'd love to get an exact date on this video. i'm guessing somewhere between 88-91?

  • I absolutely love this video. Beautiful. A must for anyone on the architecture field.

  • Great video!

  • oh my gosh.. amazing.. i swear i was born in the wrong era.

  • its lovely!

she looks like a super slim alison moyet....lol

ceremony reminds me of my lost colagen ;)

  • This was shot at 24fps and telecined at 25fps, hence the slightly speeded up audio. I did try to slow it down before posting by using an audio manipulation program, but it started to sound a bit 'electronic'.

  • @OKSauceOK The audio is perfect. I didn't realize it had even been sped up! I just figured it was the best version of the song I've ever heard. I wish it were a 15-minute extended version. Very well done in every regard.

  • @OKSauceOK You made a great work! I love this video.

  • This video and song set me back in time when there were so many first experiences. The sound and edginess reek of youth.

  • @OKSauceOK it sounds rather lovely with the sped up audio.. plus with the conversion you can tell it came from tape/analogue.. so there's like that digital warmth plus nice pitchy sped up quality found in music in cinemas and records :D. great imagery. i've commented on this before i believe.

  • The tempo of this version is too fast..x

  • Gosh...It fits so well to the song. Great job, honest!

  • Gosh! Great job, honest!

  • L'âme des années 80 !

  • really amazing...

  • BRILLIANT!

  • bravo !

  • really impressive.. for the quality of the tape maybe only with a 8mm camera is possible to capture images with this quality, poor but always incredible rich of feelings, i'm really a 80s lover,

  • this is so beautiful!

  • at 1:16 theres buildings and they look oddly familiar to a photo that joy division was in.

  • Fuck! You're right :-O! I know exactly which photo you mean! Joy Division geek that I am, I'm ashamed I hadn't noticed it before!

By the way, Sauce, this is still one of my favourite Joy Division video's on the site! OK, performed by New Order but since they were only with the three of them when this version was recorded, I consider it Joy Division minus Ian ;-).

  • wonderful.....

  • perfect... thank u so much!

  • If this video didn't have a five star rating I would've killed myself. Amazing.

  • Really nice video. Well done!

  • Where was this filmed?

  • Judging from the architecture and the fact that cars drive on the left side (see at 2:40), this is definitely shot in the UK. I don't recognize any of the buildings or landmarks, though. The person who posted the video would know. I hope you get a reply because I'd like to know the city as well.

  • Manchester, UK, maybe?

  • It was shot in and around central London in the UK. The country scenes were filmed in Surrey in the UK - wasn't raining for once LOL

  • wooow i love this!

  • wow. wow. WOW!

in my opinion the best ceremony-video ive seen as well!

you should have somehow forwarded it, i am very very sure they would have loved it and also put it onto that nice video collection dvd they released a few years ago.

  • This is by far the best video I've seen for this song out there.

  • so sick man. super 8 always looks so good

  • Very nicely done....

  • love it :)

  • very interesting visually

  • great vid + tune! super8 ftw

  • Nice work.

  • No mercy shown

  • beautiful song! And beautiful video, which city is shown in it?

  • London UK

  • How did you transfer the super 8 to this? super 8 to DVD or video ,then a capture device?

And when did you add the sound?

  • Brilliant film. There's nothing I don't love about it.

  • Awesome!

  • The most perfect song forever!!

  • this is such a fantastic video

  • spot on 10/10 on video

  • this is absolutely fucking perfect, spot on!

  • this video is perfect

  • Nice! I Love it! The Films great! + i love this song, so that always helps. Like the little story about how and why you made the video, made me feel all warm and fuzzy. hehe

  • me two

  • me three

  • Me four

  • Me'ye early...me'ye late?!? Oh swell! EYE'M 8!

  • The video is cool butit sounds a bit thin... maybe replace the soundtrack recording of this great song...?:>)

  • i love this video. thanks for posting.

  • Straight to my favorites. I love this version.

  • I love it. The most beautiful version of 'Ceremony' on the YouTube

  • genuine and superb

  • i loooooooooove it<3

  • this was one of the most brilliant musicvideos I ever seenD:

  • breathtaking

  • im 15 ok

    wasnt around during the time

but my love for these guys is all there

im sure we all want these times back

    they are geniuses

we all love you Ian R.I.P

  • how did you get the vintage feel in this music video?

  • this is genuinely beautiful...

  • This is one of the finest arts on youtube... each time I watch this I cry, simply because it's so beautiful!

  • I love it when she smiles at 2:02.

  • Whatever happned to the likely girl in the video? She's lovely looking. Or was........

  • This is a really good job - you forget that the things you record today will have significance that you'd never expect at the time. So much has changed in twenty years but Mnc is still Manc and New Order will always be fantastic. Very evocative. In the JD/NO spirit of 'strangeness' too. Ta.

  • this is really great, fits the song perfectly

  • it seems like another lifetime away when this album came out. those were good times!

  • love the story behind the video!pre-youtube video makers-ye really were ahead of everyone else!

  • I've heard many different versions of this song BY New Order,, one wayy slower than this, one at a moderate tempo, this one which is faster, the one thats has the kick pedal come in abit earlier than this and the singing isnt like this either, its more mellow and pained plus the guitar is different.

Way too much... lol but all of them very good.

  • AHAHA, the version that i have and was first introduced to is the one with an early kick pedal and the different guitar, if you find maurowalrus's vid of this song watch it, it has my version.

  • looks like a lack of fancy video fx creates a better feel

  • that quality of super 8mm gives a real good feel to this music video, like it takes me back 25 years while iam only 20 years old!!

  • Terrific job! I greatly enjoyed this.

  • Oooooh fuck I can feel nostalgia knocking at the door again... Noooooooo!!!!

    Good damn video btw...

  • GREAT job!. I usually hate unofficial videos but I like this more then the official Ceremony video

  • You really know how to make music videos. You should've made a career out of it. The video is brilliant.

  • Really Beautiful!!!

  • What the f*** ? this version is way faster than the version i have .

  • poetry.

  • god wHAhtever happened to music,,/?

  • AMAZING footage.

  • FAC 33 (Nearly!!!).

  • 8mm film is so rad man, taking a class where we use and edit super 8.sweet vid.

  • This is excellent work. Perfect complement to the song.

  • Great vid man, I love the footage with this song.

  • Does anyone know any more songs like this?

  • Try "Age of consent" by New Order (as well)! That's also a very special but very great song! (in my opinion at least!)

  • Their song "Temptation" is very similar in mood. It's long and there's several versions of it that vary a bit from each other (verse and chorus placement).

  • this is such a genius tune

its generally the dogs bollocks the intro riff and general riff are brilliant + lyrics brilliant

this is what a 3rd joy divison album wuld have sounded

    such a fucking shame

  • I love how old this video feels... I wish i was born back in the 70's...

I just cant seem to relate to people nowadayz...

  • NEW ORDER- CEREMONY 1981.

  • where was this video filmed looks like manchester to me no to sure of it tho

  • London

  • this is so awesome! Great song, great footage. This song just brings memories, dont ya think?

  • Bloody SWELL, mate! Oi...

  • if this Robin, is your mate, then that makes me your First Mate. Boy you Brits really love that word, ohh and Bloody, bloody is a brit word too :P

  • That's just a SWELL (!!!) comment!!

  • OK, truth is, i like the word swell, its a good word and can be used for almost any reply!

"I say chap, why dont we head down to my lab-or-at-ory for some tea and crumpits eh'?

  • no no no "I say OLD chap" not just chap!!! LOL

One of my best mates is american but lived next door for five years in the UK - we shared a "common" language and laughed at the differences but both discovered our cultures are really quite different - fascinating stuff! Luv your country - visited 17 states thus far

  • Yikes, I wish I could say I have been to england, but I haven't :( I have always wondered one thing though, do people wear wife beaters in england? OH, and btw, I live in utah so yeah, I doubt you been here, because there is lots of religious extremism. Not that im part of it!

  • Yep - been to Utah! :-)

  • Then you went skiing, guarantee it!

  • Wow Utah? im in Los Angeles...cant even imagine what it would be like to live there....

  • it's brilliant! thank you for the vid

  • I heart 8mm film. Great vid to a great song!

  • what's the version on the marie antoinette trailer? is that album?

  • Basel-II Accord compliance in the USA successful...MwaaaaahaHAHAHA!

    Oh Monty! PYTHON!

  • Is that Russell Square?

  • I can't remember it was a long time ago!

  • Looks like that square in between Pall Mall, Lower Regent St and Picadilly..forgot the name of the square! St James's possibly.

  • Yep St James Square.

  • hey this is great, thanx for sharing!

  • I absolutely adore this. Super 8 is a lost art.
