I think this is my favorite version of the song, I like that its a little faster then other versions. OKSauceOK, your video goes so well with the song.
Fantastic brought back memories of our 6th form common room. Despite being a headbanger I love this and for the single which was in a thick gold cover.
I think that this video is the soul of the eighties and of new wave movement. Let's all watch indie videos;they're all inspirated by MASTERPIECES like this.I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To me it looks more than 20 years old (from the cars). But I love it, the analogue qualities and it matches the song (which I have known for 20 years) very well. Fine work.
I do hope you can re-transfer the video or simply stretch it and redub the sound. Dead easy in any video editor. Would improve things 100%. Actually, I would do it for you.
Awesome, I think that time has actually given the lyrics more power, especially, combined with the video it gives a sense of the past remaining constant in the wake of the present.
Really well made :) My Dad died on this day in 1990 when i was 17... I'm watching this to remember him 20 years later. I Love You Dad! Amen. Thanks for this experience via your beautiful video/song.
Dude, all I can say is THANK YOU for posting this! You have allowed me to take a stroll down memory lane. The effects on this are really cool. Thank you again!
hi this the robin you are talking about, the director and creator of this apparently loved video which we shot in the eighties! just found it, can't believe this is on here, tony get in touch. i'm just touched by the great comments
Beautiful video for one of new orders amazing song. Thanks for this; really hits a nostalgiac vein when the world was still mysterious and full of promise.
Great video.... goes well with the music and all the sights, colours and just the whole ambience, so easily could have been used for original if filmed that little bit earlier in the 80,s.
Also could not help myself in thinking of ian up there right now, god bless and yes we do think of you always.
@077glenn , this version of the song is the original from the 7" single. the version on 'substance' we all know and love was recorded a few months later and released as a more successful single. this version actually does not have gillian playing. i'd love to get an exact date on this video. i'm guessing somewhere between 88-91?
This was shot at 24fps and telecined at 25fps, hence the slightly speeded up audio. I did try to slow it down before posting by using an audio manipulation program, but it started to sound a bit 'electronic'.
@OKSauceOK The audio is perfect. I didn't realize it had even been sped up! I just figured it was the best version of the song I've ever heard. I wish it were a 15-minute extended version. Very well done in every regard.
@OKSauceOK it sounds rather lovely with the sped up audio.. plus with the conversion you can tell it came from tape/analogue.. so there's like that digital warmth plus nice pitchy sped up quality found in music in cinemas and records :D. great imagery. i've commented on this before i believe.
really impressive.. for the quality of the tape maybe only with a 8mm camera is possible to capture images with this quality, poor but always incredible rich of feelings, i'm really a 80s lover,
Fuck! You're right :-O! I know exactly which photo you mean! Joy Division geek that I am, I'm ashamed I hadn't noticed it before!
By the way, Sauce, this is still one of my favourite Joy Division video's on the site! OK, performed by New Order but since they were only with the three of them when this version was recorded, I consider it Joy Division minus Ian ;-).
Judging from the architecture and the fact that cars drive on the left side (see at 2:40), this is definitely shot in the UK. I don't recognize any of the buildings or landmarks, though. The person who posted the video would know. I hope you get a reply because I'd like to know the city as well.
in my opinion the best ceremony-video ive seen as well!
you should have somehow forwarded it, i am very very sure they would have loved it and also put it onto that nice video collection dvd they released a few years ago.
Nice! I Love it! The Films great! + i love this song, so that always helps. Like the little story about how and why you made the video, made me feel all warm and fuzzy. hehe
This is a really good job - you forget that the things you record today will have significance that you'd never expect at the time. So much has changed in twenty years but Mnc is still Manc and New Order will always be fantastic. Very evocative. In the JD/NO spirit of 'strangeness' too. Ta.

AHAHA, the version that i have and was first introduced to is the one with an early kick pedal and the different guitar, if you find maurowalrus's vid of this song watch it, it has my version.
Their song "Temptation" is very similar in mood. It's long and there's several versions of it that vary a bit from each other (verse and chorus placement).
One of my best mates is american but lived next door for five years in the UK - we shared a "common" language and laughed at the differences but both discovered our cultures are really quite different - fascinating stuff! Luv your country - visited 17 states thus far
