Skates have pretty thick material on the tops as well as some padding and the leg gaurds merely have socks over top. Skates cut like razors.

One time I caught him in an awkward position at a wawa with 3 of his kids and his wife. I can't argue with you, I've never met him. I'm only going off his media appearances. But it would hardly be a first if he merely "played" a character to sell his "brand". This has existed since we've established pop culture, and people will always market themselves. Pronger does well in that respect because people love seeing interviews with him because you're guaranteed he'll be sharp or talk trash.
He could be a great person. I guess I just don't like the character he plays.
