its sad how people view lrts as streetcars. LRTs in Transit city would provide a higher average speed than St. Clair or Spadina, even some portions of the Eglinton Crosstown would be faster than the BD subways. An average light rail vehicle can hold nearly 200 people in crush load, it would take atleast 4 buses to fit almost as much. And all TC lines would have dedicated stops so that passengers don't go into the middle of the street for a vehicle. LRT is much more than a "glorified streetcar"
You wanna see your TTC dollars at work. Any day of the week at any time, check out Maybrook Drive in Scarborough, you'd have to go to a registered breeding kennel to see THAT much dog fucking in one location!
Interesting, I wonder how Streetcars are safer than buses. Often people get hit by cyclists and cars when they get off from streetcars because there are way too many idiots driving in downtown. With buses, there'll be no accident like that. Also, Streetcars are too old, they don't even have A/C. Slower than buses and when a streetcar gets stuck, the whole line is blocked and have to divert for a few good hours. No worries with the buses.
@bassplayer923 Oh good question sir! Good question indeed! I wonder whose fault it is that a driver doesn't know what a STOP SIGN IS. Hmmm.....well it's obviously the streetcar's fault because that's what Ford says, and we know Big Bro Ford is infallible! And I wonder - why aren't our 30-year-old streetcars being replaced, oh yeah, they ARE. I wonder which has a faster scheduled speed. Oh yeah, STREETCARS. I wonder which is faster in heavy traffic...oh yeah, NEITHER.
@gricer1326 Read it carefully, I never said who's fault it is and streetcars not being replaced. I said there are too many idiots, you idiot! - everyone knows its the idiotic drivers' fault. Also, the new ones will be in service starting early 2013, it will take 5 more years to replace entire old fleet.
Answer my question then - What happens when a streetcar gets stuck? Or what if there's a collision at some intersection? Shuttle buses? Dude, experience the wonderful streetcar ride in downtown.
@bassplayer923 I experience it every day, thanks very much! And I must say that diversions are rather rare, but then again (and with the issue of running stop signs) it's about educating motorists. What happens when a streetcar gets stuck? Well here we are lucky to have a lot of track, enough that streetcars can circumvent accidents quite easily with only a few turns. As I said, those incidences are rare, and when they do happen it's the result of police taking their sweet time (cont'd)
@bassplayer923 with an investigation in the middle of traffic as opposed to moving everything out of the way to streetcars, motorists and cyclists can continue on their way.
@gricer1326 There are crapload of delays on streetcar routes, also diversions aren't rare. Go check TTC twitter or Facebook page, you'd be surprised. When diversions occur, ALRV's fuck up the road not only for the cars but also for pedestrians crossing the streets, just end up with making everyone to wait for the next green light and worsen the congestion. In downtown, streetcars are slower than cyclists but also block the traffic at each stop. At least buses don't block at each stop.
@bassplayer923 But if you look at the @TTCnotices feed you'll notice that there are just as many, if not more delays on suburban bus routes as streetcar routes. I have to use both streetcars and buses to get to work each morning and they can both be a pain in the ass. Surface routes are, by nature, unpredictable. As for streetcars blocking traffic and people getting hit by morons, that's one reason why we have dedicated platforms. Besides, streetcars are always carrying many times the number
@bassplayer923 (cont'd) of people that are driving. Is there reason why the 15-70 people on a streetcar (160 for ALRV) are less important than the single-occupant cars? If there is, I want to know it.
@gricer1326 There are more notices regarding Streetcars than buses. Also, we all know streetcars carry more than cars and buses. Toronto should have scrapped out the streetcar back in the 60-80's and built more subway lines or underground LRT/LRV lines so that it's more reliable and safer for the riders. Budget issue? Haha, the cities poorer than Toronto has better subway lines. Countries poorer than Canada has better subway lines.
@bassplayer923 Just to verify that statement i read through the @TTCnotices page on Twitter and interestingly all of the streetcar alerts had something to do with cars getting into accidents and accident investigations. The two guilty parties here are the idiots who can't drive properly (affecting everyone) and the police who take their sweet time "investigating" the accident instead of moving the wreckage off of the street and conducting their investigation later.
@gricer1326 There's no way to prevent the idiots going on the road and sadly, amount of them is keep growing up. The investigation process needs to be more time efficient instead of watching the officers drinking coffee and having donuts. Our idiotic mayor only wanted to hire more cops instead of improving the service in any ways.
@bassplayer923 Actually there is - if an idiot driver does something stupid like run a stop sign, track them down, give them a hefty fine, take away their license and make them apply for a new one. Better safety comes from removing the idiots.
The cost of infrastructure maintenance with streetcars is marginal at worst. It's much more expensive to buy buses that only last 8 years, keep replacing them and keep buying gas. Not all stops have platforms, but many are scheduled to receive one!
@bassplayer923 Any DRL would not replace any streetcar routes. It is planned as a way to bypass Bloor/Yonge. There would be few stops and the line would not follow any streetcar routes. There is no point to be made there.
@bassplayer923 What do you mean by more reliable and more safe? Streetcars and buses are equally reliable and safe, in fact streetcars are often more reliable and safe than buses are! You know what's unsafe? Idiots. Also, where would you build new subway lines? And what would you replace an overfull bus line with?
The reason Toronto has poorer transit than poorer cities is because the provincial government is not committed to transit, and neither is the current municipal government.
@gricer1326 As I said before, the better reliability comes from more diversion ways and less things to maintain - tracks and overhead wires. Not all streetcar stops have dedicated platform, the regular stops are often dangerous because of the idiots who don't stop when the passengers get on/off. Better safety comes from not having to worry about the idiots at the stops.
We'd get to know when TTC finishes studying regarding DRT.
@bassplayer923 Modern buses pretty much are upgraded streetcars. Buses can run off of electricity just like streetcars. When have them all over the place here in Vancouver.
@Chaoitcme Upgraded streetcars? Buses and streetcars aren't even close to being that similar. This is why streetcars will never be replaced with buses of any kind.
@bassplayer923 Not even remotely accurate. LRT uses bigger, faster trains on dedicated tracks with protected intersections, signal priority, bidirectional cars, multiple-unit running, all-door boarding and dedicated STATIONS. How many times do I have to repeat this before you understand?
@Zirocket8 more like Subway>Bus>Streetcar. Subways put people underground, it takes millions of people and moves them around underground the city, every world class city on the planet has proper systems. Toronto is growing, we need to put these people underground.
The surface routes are cheap fixes that will come back to us and haunt us later. If we continue to build on station every 2 years adding to TTC we would have a world class system.
What a moron. The entire North American culture is becoming based on vehicles. What ever happened to giving the people a home? Now we're giving machines priority. Roads are huge, while bike lines and sidewalks are tiny. Look at a city like Copenhagen, where there's a record low of car accidents per year. Let's get transit city back on it's feet, and start replacing huge, gas-hog buses with subways and streetcars, which impose less on pedestrians and are much safer.
@cheeriosinabowl Let me think - what should be a higher priority, filling a few holes or upgrading bus routes so overfull they're almost a safety hazard?
... a few holes ??? Have you ever been to Toronto? Do you drive a car or even know how to? Your notion of "upgrading" a few bus routes makes me laugh hysterically. We have for more than 30 years needed subway or LRT expansion BADLY. And nothing has been done. Toronto's population has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 30 years and a few upgrades of bus routes won't cut it! Thanks for the laugh !! Hahahahaha ....
@cheeriosinabowl EXACTLY, THAT'S WHAT TRANSIT CITY WAS YOU MORON!!!! Upgrading is an understatement, more like replacing with something much less woefully inadequate. We need all the transit expansion we can get, so why spend any more money on fucking roads!?
@cheeriosinabowl and @gricer1326 Ford cut the $60 user fee on new cars, which, um hello, was money that was put towards road work. So when you lose the front axle of your car to a pothole, and you can't catch a streetcar because he thinks they're a nuisance, and have to wait forever for an overcrowded bus, because that's what Ford plans to do for the TTC- would you thank him then? Roads need work AND the TTC should not be cut.
... that $60 cash cow fee imposed by Miller was just another greedy money grab foisted onto us already beleaguered taxpayers. Miller wanted us to pay another $60/year when we renewed our license plate stickers, on all cars, not just new. And if you think that 60 bucks was going to improve the roads, you must be dreaming on cloud nine. Miller did minimal work on Toronto's road the whole time he was in office. Glad he is gone.
