Is that... Telecaster... The Charlie Christian or the Joe Pass Model ???....It sounds a bit like both of them...It must be the way it`s being played.!!
during the A, most often you don't follow the changes but just play blues lines over it... which is not wrong, but something you can do with almost any piece from the swing era...
tss i get so messed up with these scales i come from a blues funk background and i just dont get these scales, my teacher has been giving me all these new jazz scales but i cant visualize them next to the pentatonic ones, which is how my head works on the fretboard... any advice?
Im not sure it has something to do with playing a diferent scale over the minor pentatonic that makes it suddenly sound jazzy... I have to star recording my lessons :P
jazz "scales" are basically the modes that comes from the chords. if you want to make a blues sound jazzy, incorporate some of your major blues pentatonic scale with the mixolydian mode, the 5th mode of the major scale. then if you want to sound even more jazzy you can study the modes of the melodic minor scale and from there you will be able to play some stuff with more "tension", such as altered scale
@sollinkmaster You dont have to over complicate things by learning a dozen scales. Know what key you are in and add colour tones from there. #11s to major chords(thats a F# on a Cmaj7 chord for example), b9 and #9 to dominant7 chords(Ab and A# on a G7), and #7s to minor chords(C# on a Dm7) are good starting points. From there you can add more exotic sounds like tritone substitutions, diminished scales and all that theory stuff.
Learn basic harmony, from there on the rest is very logical.
That's what i could hear. (And that's what most people do use on this progression, higher level players will throw in altered notes and other outside playing techniques)
I'd reccomend getting a book called 'The Jazz Theory Book' by Levine. It will help you with that kind of thing, and alot of other useful stuff.
Thanks again, Paul for posting this. I watch it about twice a day and it helps me prepare for my practice session. I've been learning guitar for about 5 months and I want eventually to play in this style. Wonderful stuff!
Would someone please let me know how I can obtain this exact backing track as heard here? What is the chord sequence on this? This is exactly what I am looking for. Could anyone do me a CD copy? Many thanks for any help. John.
Great playing man! Thanks a lot for posting. I'm a sax-flute player and really love the way you use the Blues scales over the Rhythm changes. Can you give me some tips on that? Thanks again Bro.
thanks again! The chords are widely known as "Rhythmn Changes" These are standard changes and can be found anywhere on the net. I think I played it im Bb.
The backing track is from Band in a Box software. I recommend this highly for practice purposes.
Thanks Paul. Would someone please tell me where I can purchase a great jazz/blues backing track like the one you use here. Failing that would you be able to copy me a disc you have and send it to me? Many thanks, John
hey jmsbk12345, if you still havent then you have to check stuff from Jamey Aebersold. I havent found that there but iam sure he has to have rhythm changes somewhere in the multitude of publications he made. You can check with issue has this and order it, youll get a nice transcription and a backing track on cd or tape!

appreciate your post; just wish there was more playing over the chord changes. lots of ii-V-I 's in these changes that need to be negotiated.

A Tele for jazz... interesting.
Have you ever thought about putting some of those super thin (9s or 10s) GHS Flatwounds on that thing?

how did you get that tone out of a tele?
erandolapedorra 2 years ago
put the neck pickup on the tele and maybe roll down the tone knob. Add a dash of reverb and your there

I like the way your solo phrase can stay within about 1 1/2 octaves and say so much, before beginning a new phrase.

Nice, this music puts me at ease. I play bass and what people don't realize is that Jazz is actually one of the hardest genres to play.

To all those who have contacted me regarding the backing tack for this piece.
It was produced using Band in a Box software and uses the classic rhythm changes sequence in Bb.
I no longer have the original backing but I could easily redo it and post it as an MP3 for download. I will try to get round to doing that this week.
