Definitely one of my favourite pieces by Mehldau. The harmonic modulations are totally insane and make your hairs stand on end. Marginally prefer the version with Metheny as he totally rocks out the 2nd half which contrasts nicely with Mehldau's more subdued balladic approach the first part. But there's no doubt this rendition is sublime as well.
Jarrett is not a milestone of same power as Bill Evans. Jarrett is a fenomenal pianist, I REALLY like him, but his music is a further elaboration initiated by Evans. Pianists from the 60´s and on owe thanks to Evans.
Brad Mehldau is differ. He is up with lot of new stuff:
I'm sure even Mehldau can't deny the influence of Jarrett & Evans on the Trio genre of jazz, but to compare Mehldau to either of them is really quite ridiculous! There are just so many differences in the approach, the structure, etc. I personally love Jarrett, Evans & Mehldau and listen to each with equal pleasure, depending on my mood. All great stuff. We are lucky to have Brad Mehldau.
@jaredrwflores Definitly lucky! In these days talent doesn't count, only money...(actually talent even makes it harder.)And he is the rare exception!Almost the only one,so far.
I love this trio with jeff ballard on drums. I really like the grooves they get into. I think they have a unique sound. They blend their influences so well into a original sound.
Such attitude @ 4:35 onward

Brad Mehldau is differ. He is up with lot of new stuff:
Odd meters like 7/4
Two tempos at the same time
Different tonalities
Unlimited remarcable left hand
Both hands ad-lib simultaneously
Classic and pop infuencies into jazz
Incredible interaction with Larry

I like the rendition done with Pat Metheny. Metheny's guitar and guitar/synthesizer kinda give more expression

too groovy not to sway to the rythm, particularly in last 3 minutes.
