Illegal immigration is about one thing - CHEAP LABOR. It's a collusion between:

Being from poland and as a new computer science grad from American college my experience was exactly the contrary. It took 3 months for me to land an OK offer while most of my American classmates got offers earlier than me. Many companies came to the on-campus job fair with a 'No sponsorship for H1B's', because of the saved cost and hassles from the immigration procedures.

It is clear that many companies will not sponsor H1B if they can hire an American.

BTW, I visited my senate representative with an engineering org. We told our stories, then the staffer said that local companies need the H1-B cap lifted because of a shortage of skilled people. One staffer suggested that we should consider getting re-trained, even though we all had engineering degrees, including at least one doctorate and a few master's degrees! Re-trained to do what--flip burgers? It is clearly a democracy of the corporations, not the people.

I have been through two so-called retraining programs after a Ph.D. in biophysics. One, a JTPA Title III program got me 2 yrs of low-paid high-stress call center work after I agreed to lower my expectations.
