Damn right!!! He makes that pill bottle sound insane
Hes the only man who emulates the sound of a car reving and changing forward gears with his Slide! Its face melting to say the least . He is a master of the slide guitar.
I miss him so much. Wish i could take him for a spin in his souped up ford.
HEY Ste Kelly? Friend of Al Roughley? The Apprentice Hippy? Him, not you. St Helens Tech Coll? Circa 1975? Any more info? Er. Pete Bullen and air rifle? Frank Zappa, Bongo Fury? Clifton on Sea in Bath, ur coz Paul. That Scrumpy thats made me this weird? You There?
The greatest Irish Guitar Player that ever walked the face of the earth. U2 are good songwriters, but they were never as hot as Rory's band. Lou, Rod, and Gerry were amazing musicians also.
I was fortunate enough to see Rory destroy so many bands he opened for in the 70s. Deep Purple for one. Saw him do the same to Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson asked the crowd how they were supposed to follow Rory after he blew up the stage with his performance in '76. What an axeman. I swear he came back and played "Messin' With The Kid" along with Tull at the end.
Wish I could have seen him live, sadly I'm too young! To me he's the worlds best guitar player! BTW this song is about a Ford (Zodiac) MK IV Executive he bought from Muddy Waters! RIP Rory
@77pob Not the whole concert officially anyway, there is a DVD of a collection of Old Grey Whistle Test songs though which does have one of Rory's songs from this concert, not sure which one though
@77pob Hey man, have it on video from when they re-broadcast it in 1995 (just after Rory's death) on BBC, first time since its original airing in '76. Fantastic show, blows your head off. I could've sworn someone told me that it was on DVD a while back, maybe I imagined it
I discovered Rory just a few years ago and he blows me away! I can't believe I never heard of him sooner. He is now my alltime favorite! So pure and real!
I would love to see Ford Motor Company pick up this classic for their commercials, I think it's time they learn of this gem. Rory loved Fords, I read he bought Muddy Waters Ford tour Van and proceeded to tour Eurpoe in it. The man loved Muddy and his Ford. Most awesome I'd say.
Rory is just an amazing guitarist, seen him a few times live, left every time drained with a sense of seeing one of the best shows ive seen, what a loss to the music world in my opinion, souped up ford was the closing song, amazing....
MY GOD! I don't know if I've ever seen a better example of live rock&roll. I wish I would have seen Rory live back in those days. The only time I remember him coming to play Chicago, he was the opening act for Bachman-Turner Overdrive. How did those hacks have the balls to follow an act like Rory Gallagher?
Hey, kw21925. I saw Rory during that tour!!! I was 11 years old. I remember they intro'd him and said, "Please welcome Rory Gallagher." I said, "Who is Lori Gallagher?" He played this as his last encore and I was a fan of his!!!
@kw21925 I was there during that tour!!! I was 11 years old. It was in Minneapolis. I remember they intro'd him by saying, "Please welcome Rory Gallagher." I said, "Who is Lori Gallagher?" He closed with this song and I was so BLOWN away!!! :-D
I think his brother had that car, see irish tour dvd.....
He also has arrives in jensen at the macroon festival and a jag at the marquee. Do not think Rory could drive, or had a licence....Pardon me if i am wrong that was what i was told he did not drive....
That's true, Rory never learned to drive, somebody always had to drive him to where he needed to be.
When Muddy Waters was recording in London, Rory was hired to play on the sessions. One night Muddy was trying to get a taxi back to his hotel after the session. Rory offered to take him back in his car. He kept that car over 20 years until the day he died, even when it fell apart. He wouldn't get rid of it because Muddy Waters rode in it once.
Always my favorite Rory song. Hairs standing up on my neck as I write this. I'm gonna plug into my 8x10 and play along with the best damned guitarist. Cheers Rory!!!!
@dylanthumb I TOTALLY TOTALLY agree with you, the hair stands up on the back of my neck at 0.59! I taped this show when it was shown on BBC back in '95 shortly after Rory's death, I was 19 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The power of this is just unbelievable...
Until just now I thought "sure" was spelled "shure" like I had pronounced it, but after looking it up and finding I was wrong all of these years, I decided to change it to "zure"... from now on your not 100% zure.
@originaltbyrd Rory would use open G or Open A then the capo would change Key in this case to C tune your guitar to e a e a c# e and but your capo on the third fret. I have to do it in G with the capo on the fifth. Make sure you raise the action of your strings a bit!

I saw him in 1975. I was 11. He was warming up for Bachman-Turner Overdrive. There were 4 bands and Rory was last before BTO. The announcer says, "Please welcome, Rory Gallagher!" I said, 'Who is Lori Gallagher?' He played this tune ans I was BLOWN away!!!
P.S. This is also a great vid because it shows Rory stinging the Telecaster (even though the famous beat-up Strat was evidently his favorite guitar). He was a maestro of the electric guitar.
And he could blow most folks out of the water with electric sitar, harmonica, mandolin, acoustic guitars, saxophone... and probably a whole bunch of other instruments.
Generally when he played slide or in open tunings he didn't use the strat. In fact in this concert he hardly used the strat at all. Thanks for watching.
Rory nearly always played slide on one of his strats - he had mre than one of course - in D G or E open tunings typically. Check out the big white Strat he uses to play "Philby" in one Youtube clip. As a great muso he had no problem playing his normal numbers in open tunings and could easily solo around such tunings - most guitarists would flounder doing this.
Alternately he would leave his slide pieces to the end of a set typically before his acoustics numbers.
In the early years with Taste Rory played slide mostly on the telecaster in open tunings, later on he played a lot of his slide work on the strat in standard tuning.
Excellent, thanks for posting. Rory was truly a man of the people,no flash living, and playing from the heart..pity he had to leave us before he was recognized for the great musician and performer he truly was.
I remember this from when I left the UK to live in Australia; the guy was a creative hero. What did I end up doing in gawd's own earth? I teach music!!!
