  • I think Maria Tipo own the best performance of this

  • He is so special in technics and emotion!

I own a vinyl shop and I got records most of Chopin virtuoso like Argerich, Zimmerman, Rubinstein, Kissin etc and Thai Son. I like them all for different reasons, but I say Thai Son expression is very unique. He could make me cry in some passage, and make me strong in others

I prefer Ivo playing Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninof more than Chopin

    @ wagneristhebest:

Previous comments epxlained clearly. Martha left the room not because of Thai Son, she likes him

  • props to the audience's effort for holding their coughs

  • lovely, very polished, very detailed and musical, but no match for pogorelic. This lad is a very good pianist, but the distinction here is in purely natural genius, which he simply just does not have. Tonal colour and gradation is instinctive creation, no composer can give any terms to describe that particular aspect of playing. Argerich could not believe her ears and resigned from the jury in this year when Pogorelic was dropped. She was right

  • so detailed

  • He's vietnamies just like me

  • Look at a picture of a very hot babe for 1 minute then look at his face in 1:09, pause it!

  • He's doing a lot of unnecessary movements with his fingers. Avdeeva does that, and it's annoying to look at.

  • i love the glasses :D

  • @therealgorilla99

How many children does he have?

  • @KatiushaVN4 umm...0

    why

    r u a stalker...

  • @KatiushaVN4

He got no children. He is now a professor in Canada.

  • tremendo nocturno

    me encanta tocarlo en guitarra

ya que no puedo en piano

  • the sensitivity to each and every phrase, note, time interval, strikes me in this performance. I wish I could play like this if I practised every day. I know, stupid of me to want this unattainable goal.

  • But certainly the judges weren't prejudiced, except possibly Martha Argerich.

  • But it could be true that Asian were born not for playing European Music as they all belongs to other kind of music.

  • Well, and now I just heard such a ridiculous idea from some guy named stellinna96 that there are people who don't have soul. It's pretty funny to say that, isn't it?

  • I heard several times, some men and women, musicians especially from republics of the former Soviet Union say that, "Asians don't have souls, and they could never interpret European Music as well as we do". If this pianist did not have a "soul", he would not have won this prestigious competition. Well, he graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory. However, one can learn technique, but not talent. It's a relief that the judges of this competition were not prejudiced.

  • great interpretation

  • dang thai son is my hero.:) makes me proud of my country. I wish i could play like him someday!

  • Fantastic. Glorious.

  • hehe sorry everyone i was wrong :D the person i talked about is not this man :D hehe i's another sorry million times :D

  • Anh là niềm tự hào của người Hà nội ,của Việt nam.Nhưng anh cứ phải xa cách như

thế mãi không?Anh là người cô đơn? hay anh thích cô đơn?Cám ơn mailymuzik.

  • Do ALREADY world famous pianists ever enter these competitions? Lang Lang and Kissin came to mind. :)

  • @KarrotKun1 I think that for famous pianist like Kissin, Lang Lang or Volodos, there is like some kind of deal, they actually dont need to prove anything to anyone, but i also thoug alot about what would happen....Lang Lang its like 26 i think.....so he still can ..... its a little hilarious to imagine that...lol

  • @KarrotKun1 some of them do. Most winners and runner ups become world famous. Look at the list of previous winners and the judges of these competitions.

  • @KarrotKun1

What Chopin competition does is opening doors for those aspiring pianists looking for an international career (When they win, the get media exposure thus contacted by agencies and record companies),not helping those to "prove" anything. Since Lang Lang already got famous (more than 10 years ago when he replace Andre Watts last minute) and enough media attention, there is no point for him to enter, consider his teacher Gary Graffman never likes the idea of competition to start with.

  • Amazing!!

  • fuck... just look at his hands. amazing

  • DTS said that he felt annoyed about the common talks of DTS/Ivo/Martha, because what Martha was not happy about is that Ivo couldn't even get into the final; Martha didn't say the she felt Ivo is more worthy to get the first prize than him.

  • Fantastic! Just look at his hands. Such a genius!

  • Enchanting.

  • Wonderful.

  • You need to listen the famous Nocturne no 2 op.9 played by him :no pianist can play this nocturne with so much emotions and truly feelings like him ..I have the completed selection of Chopin Pieces by him ,I really pround about that and I listened to his nocturnes every night instead of Arthur Rubinstein ~!Vietnamese persons pround of him and I'm pround to be Vietnamese~! Sorry for my English.

  • @DarknessL12 can't find the piece on youtube. now I really want to listen to it.

  • he's the most excellent pianist in the world for me. his parents and some members in his family were dead because of bombs in 1972 when american people conquering vietnam. And after passing this bad pain, he became the first asian people to won chopin competition in 1980

  • @ilovevietnamful I don't know where did you find the information that some members of his family were dead in the war.he has 1 sister and 1 brother. His sister,Professor Tran Thu Ha,the old director of Hanoi Conservatory are still ALIVE as well His brother who is a architect is also alive. And even his mom(who taught my teacher)who is nearly 100(92 years old,if my memory serves me right)is very healthy at the moment! His dad died because of his own disease, not because of the war.

  • @ilovevietnamful Is he the first to win it? Thought vietnam had a couple of title holders.

  • @Ianthe22 he's the first asian to win this

  • @ilovevietnamful Yea he is.

  • @ilovevietnamful This is not true, where have you heard this from? I've read an interview of his MOTHER, Madame Thai Thi Lien, conducted around a year ago!

The myth sounds quite believable but that's not the truth.

  • @ilovevietnamful that's why that pain you quote makes better

  • @ilovevietnamful everyone says the same in each videos on youtube

  • @beelo1220 can you play better?

  • ÔI! Bác Đặng nhà ta chơi hay quá

  • @abidoful

    i love you

  • omg... listen to the polyphonic passages...

I can feel the agony... :'(

  • Another pianist who makes Chopin turn in his grave. And he is a jury's member at a Warsaw Competition 2010 too! Unbelievable indeed!

  • Sobrio, elegante, equilibrado, mesurado. gran talento de interpretación.

  • he is the best Chopin's player in every era.Vietnam is so proud to have a genious like him!

  • @linhpiano, I would not use the word genius to describe Son. Chopin was the genius. Thai Son is very talented.

  • @linhpiano In fact Vietnam sucks, cause this nation didn't appreciate it's taents. That's why Dang Thai Son doesn't live there. And I'm saying it as a Vietnamese

  • Actually Dang Thai Son and Zimerman are only two Chopin winners that have broad reportoire...

  • @yenhoho hmm, what about Pollini, Argerich, Bella Davidovich ?

  • i am so upsad about his technique and talents, that i haven't.

  • Oh I see... he still looked a bit upset to me though :P

  • does anyone know where or how i can download this?

  • Install Download Master freeware, and so on...

  • senunotrop - if you look at the Pederewski edition you will see that at 3:10 - bar 48 - he didn't make a mistake. That trill in the left hand is written in. He plays this to perfection in my estimation. It's beautiful.

  • That was incredibly rude of everyone at the end, they started coughing instead of applauding him. That's really horrible I would be really upset if that happened to me... well done Dang Thai Son!

  • 3:10 there was a little mistake, but the pience is very well played. marvelous interpretation!

    Bravo!

  • Simply the best...perfect played Nocturne...

  • Wow i play it even faster than him and even posted it

  • @callenishss I saw your vid. Please do not think that you're better just because you played it faster. You also have a tendency to play the left hand too loud.

  • The best rendition I could find on this sight. Absolutely perfectly played, at least for my tastes.

  • cool!!

  • hermosa interpretacion

  • If you don't like him,you don't need to comment anything! He is the pride of my country.Hes A LENGEND!Hes the heart of Vietnam and you know,he made Vietnam's music more radiant! How will you feel if I say something like that with your idol or the pride of your country?I know Vietnam is a poor country but we have self-esteem!And I felt really hurt when I saw what you guys said about him. Many pianist in the world respect him!So R YOU A SUBTLELY PIANIST?I just need to know that HES REALLY GREAT!

  • His name is Dang Thai Son, he come from Viet Nam .. now he is living in Canada

  • lol, well hes not, obviously

  • he is Vietnamese!!I'm so proud! He is so amazing!!!!

  • poor rubato, very good technique

  • it's actually a diploma piece

  • in which country and curriculum?

  • @callenishss

ABRSM, regardless of the country. The same syllabus from ABRSM is used in almost every country in the world - God knows what kind of pieces are on the diploma list for Vendetta5246's world where this is a grade 3 piece.

  • i agree

  • Really, was someone singing this SONG? I must have missed something!

  • The piano's strings were. They're just not inside a human's body and ain't pronouncing any words (you're able to understand).

  • This nocturne begins so beautifully and then develops to such a strange middle section. With all my love for Chopin, I don't 'get' that section at all. Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this?

  • personally i love that section, the agiato section i think you mean. this section is very sad and i think it represents someon fighting with himself in his own thoughts. maybe something along the lines of "HAVE I DONE THE RIGHT THING??? NO IT WAS RIGHT!!!! NO IT CANT BE I WISH I CAN TAKE IT BACK!!! BUT NO ITS FOR THE BEST!!!?? NO YOU HURT HER AND YOU CANT TAKE IT BACK!! BUT THERE MUST BE A WAY OUT!!! WHAT DO I DO??? HOW DO I DO THIS" and ll these thoughts are going on the persons mind. t

  • Yes, I did mean the agitato section. Your analogy/story describes or rather tries to make sense of the music in a brilliant way. Thank you very much for that insight. I think I appreciate the piece a whole lot more now.

  • thank you =]

  • very relaxing, thank you for the video.

  • that ra trinh` do^. cua? minh` chua bang` anh Son. nhung cung~ choi kha' roi^`

  • He's quite a looker on top of everything else.

  • Alien's hands. I can not ignore his hands when he run the scales :) It really look alike alien fingures.

  • I love You - Dang Thai Son !

  • This is the video that makes me think why DTS deserve to be the winner. His playing is so musical that truly reflects Chopin's heart and soul. I think Pogo has got the technique but when it comes to great interpreters like this, the technique is not important anymore as they all mastered the songs and play them with ease.

  • This version is MUCH BETTER than Pollini...I like it!

  • @phamxuantung he is not just a great interpreter. he's also a great expresser.

  • @phamxuantung That's the true. No doubts.

  • Very beautiful thank you!!!!!!!!

  • DTS did played very well, this piece is not easy to be played so musical.

Did anyone can post IVO's playing in that competitiion ?

  • Furthermore, music is about reaching and grabbing the heartstrings of people that can hear. If no one understands your music, if no one can feel what you feel when you play, then clearly you're missing something important. In 1980 the person who won was DTS. The Chopin competition is tough, and if they didn't think anyone was clearly the winner, they wouldn't have awarded #1 to anyone and instead only give #2. DTS won that year, enough said.

  • I agree that Ivo should have at least hit the final round, but DTS is indeed skilled, and only the blind would say he didn't deserve it. Martha was not the ONLY qualified judge that year, and the other TOP qualified judges thought DTS was better. Like many have said, music is subjective, and it was understandable that Martha felt insulted that someone with a very similar style to her was eliminated. She probably felt outdated and irrelevant because of the outright rejection of similar style.

  • @123Clean123 I agree with you that there were many qualified judges. Few people realize that Martha was opposed only to Pogorelich's elimination from the semi-final; she was not against any finalist (which she explicitly stated in a televised interview during the competition). In fact she sent Dang Thai Son a telegram of congratulations after he had won. People should do research, and appreciate that both Dang Thai Son and Ivo Pogorelich (Ivo, pehaps less so now) are great artists of merit.

  • @123Clean123 You mean only the deaf would say he didn't deserve it, blind people can still listen...

  • greatjob

  • Only 20 here?, and he plays this even with a lighter touch than Maria Tipo, one of the great names also. Looks perfectly calm, never know it was a competition.

  • Comment removed

  • 22, actually.

  • I love this guy

  • 素晴らしいです。

  • Martha probably thought that he should go onto the final round, but certainly not the first prize.

  • I mean pogo...not DTS

  • fascinating technique

  • ダンタイソンは初めて聴きましたが、素晴らしいですね。

  • that was beautiful

  • High ratios difference between his body size and his fingers size :D

    Whoever agree thumps up :D

  • me up :D

  • Sensational! One of the best versions I've heard . Thank you for posting this video.

  • I think this piece is the best classical piece ever. But it's not easy.

  • Good performance. Dang Thai Son seems to have some understanding of the flowing nature of Chopin's music, although he sometimes lacks percussive emphasis.

  • I think people are influenced by the rhythmic style of chopin, and the melodies

  • what glasses are those???

    wtf

  • i find his fingers very annoying, but he plays really good

  • I am proud of he is asian

  • 1st asian ever won

  • he is viet ^^

  • absoultely beautiful

  • Also in this nocturne (I heard recently from him) Pogorelich demonstrates to be at another level of musical poetry. No comparation, this

is industrial pianism, Ivo is a poet.

  • Dang Thai Son's freaking hands look like spiders because he has long fingers and they crawl up and down the keyboard. it looks cool

  • What brings you to making such a self-evaluation at youtube, theweasler?

  • You look at his fingers. Man, that is alien..cuz fingers longer than usual. No doubt about he is chopin winner after 70 years at 1980.

  • Man.. This guy is legendary in chopin music. Now he is also one of the judge for world pianist contest.I agreed with you some point Pogorelich is little better than him. But in general Dang is better. Dang is talented at 4 years old with piano and coached by many world famouse teacher in Russia, Poland.

  • He might be better trained, but he was not better than Pogorelich.

  • at time, vietnam was unrated on the world pianist map. The only person training him at time was his mom. I dont think he had better training from people coming from much more developed countries ;)

  • He studied in Tchaikovsky conservetoire. It was like 6 years before he won Chopin piano competition.

  • Ivo also received very decent education, more decent education than that of Dang. Dang studied with his mom (during war time) until being discovered later to study at Moscow. While Ivo received formal training since he was 12 and later transferred to Moscow conservatory.

To me, one's success in a competition is subjective but can be used as a relative measurement of one's talent. Arguments on this subject are rather childish.

  • Ivo and Dang were classmates 1980 and lived in the same dorm of Tchaikovsky conservatory.

  • I can't believe that this guy could win Pogorelich...

    Pogorelich is much better

  • You Ivo can possibly win, he did not pass the second round?????????

  • How can Ivo Pogorelich possibly win?????? He did not pass the second round.

  • Wrong, that is a idea of Martha, I think Dang Thai Son muce better

  • Pogo has the same style as Martha's, the reason why she made the scandal in that competition.

  • I like both of them,Ivo AND Dang. Both of them are genius.Ivo is more "agitated" and Dang is more "soft".I am sooo happy tha Maurizio Pollini won at 1960 and Martha Argerich at 1965 the chopin competition...just imagine Martha and Maurizio at the same year, same piano competition, that could be the most dificult decision for the jury and exactly that was the problem of Ivo and Dang, unfortunately!!Both of them are incredible, first class pianists and Chopinists

  • SarrasaniPianoCircus:Thank you for your response.I respect your opinion, I respect your way of view but I don't agree with you.Dang Thai Son's playing is also very poetic and very interesting. And if someone don't like him it has to do only with taste and not with his quality as an artist and as a pianist.

  • You are SO right. People can diss your comment all they want, it won't change the truth..

  • it will not change the true that DTS is always better than pogo and the winner over pogo forever by the world. listen b...

  • Ahaha, the truth? This is subjective, hence there is no "ultimate" truth. But good musicians see one thing, bad musicians see different things. That's all.
