it's my job but in france i'm a supervisor of 25 pickers and we make 100 ton in 2 months
the bigger producer makes 200 ton !!
this year we let 20 ton too small
when i see this video i'm affraid ! here we paid half an euro for one kilo picked (to the picker) it cost us 84 cents of one euro with taxes add the package cost and production cost ,we must sell it 1.5 euros per kilo
@upsweet07 why afraid? on a good production year, he picks 400 tons in about 3 1/2 weeks. but... you know how it goes. ........ frost, rain, hail or too cold for the bees to work... and then there is no crop. or if everyone has a big crop.. then the prices are low. with Cherries, you might get 1 good year out of every 5.
this year we had big rain at the begining with big splits !
i said affraid because this buisness is going down for 5-6 years and it became hard to sell a good price and some countries of east europe (turkish) are comming in the buisness but they don't have the same cost for handworking
3 years ago i've seen some californian cherries in paris they was perfect !
@upsweet07 its very hard here too.. for obvious reasons. too many acres in california. at one time I considered planting on my property but now, I'm glad I didnt.
nobody is coming out ok money wise this year. He estimates he will let 100 ton of cherries drop on the ground because they are too small for the shed. and yes!! I remember 25 ft spikes! also, Orondo orchards had 30 ft wheel ladders, sometimes a platform built half way up in the tree to set ladders on! a whole family would pick all day on one tree.
I hope yer friend came out ok money wise...lotsa of fruit left on the trees this year.
A real informative vid, brotha Ken. Too bad they didn't have camcorders back when I was climbing a 25 foot spike ladder on trees that took all day to just pick one tree.
amazing !

Farmwork is hard work they say, picking all those cherry trees, too bad if he has to drop alot of the cherrys in the trees.
Nice of your neighbour to let you work for them, thats what I like about the country side, nice neighbours :)
