That helps very much, when I hear people recite Haiku in English I don't hear the structure because it isn't there

Thats because when writing in English, the 5-7-5 rule isn't needed.

Er... Yes it is. Only when translation japanese haiku you don't always get 17 sylables.

Original work should always have the 5 7 5 rule. It is what defines a haiku.
