Well Graf beat Venus Williams in Graf's last Wimbledon in 1999, and and in 1999 French Graf beat all the power players including Davenport. Graf retired because of her age and injury. I don't recall Seles ever using the stabbing as an excuse, actually Seles said the stabbing and time away made her more mature of a person and that she realized life was more than tennis. Graf and Seles are two all time greats who won about everything and beat everyone.
Martina Navratilova won this match. Some of you here say that Steffi Graf didn't play as good in this match and do not give Martina Navratilova credit. That's your opinion. in my opinion, Martina won, bottom line. Steffi wasn't injured, and Martina won. And Martina beat Steff in later matches too.

Losing 4 out of 5 matches to someone who was aged 28-34 at the U.S Open and nearly losing the other. What a disgrace for a 22 slam winner. Graf and Seles are the two most overrated players of all time. Just look how bad both did when the power hitters like Davenport and Williams came. Graf retired like a coward and Seles got her ass kicked for years and used the stabbing as a pity excuse.
Agreed, grafgirl. 91 was a forgettable year for her. I admit, though, that I loved watching her lose so badly to S-V and also those matches vs. Sabatini. It was long overdue.
1991 was probably Graf's worst year of tennis ever discounting 97 when she was so badly injured she shouldnt have even played. She lost 6-0, 6-2 to Sanchez Vicario at the French, and lost to Jana Novotna on SLOW courts in Australia. She lost almost every match she played vs Sabatini. Truly an embarassing year of tennis for her standards.
Alot of people analyze Graf's slump in the early 90s. I think alot of her slump was due to Seles. What I mean by that is I am aware why people say she was in a slump since she was losing to others besides Seles like Martina, Sanchez, Sabatini, Novotna, more than usual. However I think Seles cracked Graf's aura by beating her twice in the spring of 1990, then stripped her confidence by taking her #1 early in 91. Others were no longer as scared of Steffi and Steffi herself lost some belief.
@selesfan30 Seles certainly seemed to have Graf's number at this point in time. It would have been so interesting to see if she could have come up with game plan to beat Seles. But then, came the crazy German fan of Steffi's, stabbed Monica and she was never the same. For me, every big title Steffi won after that is a bit suspect and open to the question: Could she have won if Monica Seles were still playing?

It was no coincidence in my opinion after the Seles stabbing Graf fully regained confidence in her own play and her aura of invincability and she began to win all her matches with Martina, Sabatini, Sanchez, and Novotna again which she wasnt all the time while Seles was #1.

Interesting match. Martina played well, but Steffi didn't seem to be hitting with nearly the velocity she usually produced.

Nö, das war die Sabatini, gegen die habe ich damals an einem Punkt sieben von acht Spielen verloren.
Die Seles habe ich meistens besiegt, sogar als sie #1 war.
