I don't understand why people are so surprised about this. The Bible greatly supports (and in many cases even commands) torture, murder, rape, slavery and incest, I am astounded to see christians not doing these on a more regular basis. I guess kids these days just don't read the Bible anymore.
A Christian explained this to me - apparently there are two types of morality;
1. Subjective morality - that includes it is wrong to steal, wrong to torture etc.
and
2. Objective morality - that includes... well I'm not quite sure - and I'm not sure that he was sure either.
But 'Objective morality' is superior because it comes straight from God and I guess that if you are Objectively moral you don't need to worry too much about being Subjectively moral. Though I may have got this wrong.

I am a Christian but I also believe that organized religion will be the downfall of our society. So many crimes have been comitted "In the name of God" - none more barbaric and savage than the use of torture. The question is what won't an individual confess to under this tactic. How can we allow this to be done to some, but call it a crime in our own nations? Let's be honest, the use of torture is, by definition an act of terrorism! Do we really want to regress to cave dwelling savages?

You can draw any conclusion you want to. I was raised in a Christian household (but have been agnostic since high school) but that has NOTHING to do with why I detest Islam as an exceptionally dangerous religion and even more so as a completely backwards ideology.
Not all Muslims, but far TOO MANY still have (or tacitly accept) the kind of outdated "crusade/jihad" mentalities that the Christian world has largely moved on from long ago. You just don't see Christian suicide bombers.
