The big argument of fans is the 48-10. This statistic is misleading b/c the Habs were playing in an era when the majority of teams were weak. Even the Bruins, Red Wings, and Leafs were shadows of their former selves. With a roster stacked with talent, the Canadiens easily swept through a league where their only competition came from 2 teams. If you doubt this, read Drydens autobiography, he says so himself. The Islanders were dominant in a strong time, the greatest team of all time.

The Islanders may not have as many Hall of Famers, but the ones they do have are better. Mike Bossy is indisputabllly better than Guy LaFleur, and the Canadiens. Doubt that? Bossy had more goals than any player on that team, despite the fact that he only played 9 seasons.
Bryan Trottier is also better than Jacques Lemaire, or anyone else playing for the Canadiens, again he has more points (over 1,400) and assists (almost 1,000) than anyone on that Canadiens team.

Montreal kicked NY Islanders' asses twice in the 70's during their dynasty. 1976 (in 5 games) and 1977 (in 6 games). They showed the Isles how to win the Cup. Problem is the Isles did it mostly against weak opponents in the 80s. Any team the Isles beat were good enough to be there you say? LOL. Yeah they were, but it still doesnt remove the fact that the Isles beat weak opponents time and again. When they faced a monster opponent like the 84 Oilers, they clearly failed. R.I.P 80-83 Isles.

Analysis, you need analysis dude. The Canadiens of the early 80's didnt have Cournoyer, Lemaire and Dryden (they all retired after the 79 Cup win). So the early 80s Habs were NATURALLY weaker. Remove Trottier, Gillies and Billy Smith frm the Isles team AFTER the 1983 win and I guarantee you the Isles wouldnt have it made to the finals in 84. The late 70s Habs were a better dynasty, period. Canadiens 48-10 from 76 to 79. Islanders 60-18 from 80 to 83. Do the math, and tell me whos better.

May around you that the NHL had the same 2-3-2 format in 1982 and 1983 but it wasnt controversial because there was no game 5 in either of those series. The Islanders are the most underated dynasty in history. They could beat any team at any kind of game. They could beat the Habs in skating games and they could beat the Flyers in checking games. Also, people say Gretzky is the greatest, but Bossy is the greatest. If he had twenty years to play like Gretzky did he'd hold all the records. Not Gretzky.

At the end ot the Habs dynasty they were better,but at the end of theirs,the Oilers were better.I still think The Habs of 76-79 were a more dominating dynasty and I'm not taking anything away from the Isles.I think Mike Bossy was the most purest goal scorer I have ever seen! I hate to admit it because Guy Lafleur was my favorite player,Gretzky was awesome also Lemieux,but Bossy had the best hands in hockey! 573 goals in 752 games Ouch!!

of course the Habs were the greatest. Only some ignorant people dont recognize that. It wasnt just 46 losses in 4 seasons, it was only 10 playoff losses in 58 playoff games 76-79. the islanders could only dream of having a record like that. the only reason why the isles won 19 straight series is that they didnt face the Habs in the 81 or 82 playoffs. had they, they would have been shut down completely. the canadiens had the best defence in the 80s. and best all time. good post.

Remember...a year later The Islanders would take out The Oliers in 4 straight as well and The Oilers were a far more skilled team then The Canucks ever were. I wonder why there's no video of the Islanders' 1983 cup win. The Canucks had nothing to be ashamed of in '82. Nobody thought they'd ever get as far as they did that year. It was a huge surprise that would not happen again until '94. Who knows when it will happen a 3rd time?
