What a very sad film but beautifully made. Congratulations to the writer and to the director. The music is haunting; the acting,superb. Pacing is wonderful.Whether or not the man did this out of his love, Japanese culture dictated that out of a sense of justice and integrity, the man claimed accountability for the accident. He paid for it by sacrificing the tools of his trade...his eyes.
What do you say at a time like that? THANK YOU is not enough. Everything she sees is because he doesn't. Every time she opens her eyes, she has a gift she'd never had asked for. She feels bad, speechless, guilty. He's paid the ultimate price (his life - career, way of living) it revolved around his "eye" in the camera. She "sees" that now, and she was "blind" to the fact just moments before. She was sad for what she didn't have, not thankful for what she did have - not knowing it was a gift.
