Chaplain Barry Black, has been an inspiration to me for many years now and the more I hear him speak the more my desire to make a difference in this world grows. God less you Sir!
The most amazing thing about this interview is that Barry Black is 62 years old - only seven years younger than Brian Lamb. I'd have guessed he was in his mid-40s.
Mr. Black is a wonderful man and you can truly see god in this mans life. He is a wonderful inspiration and romodel for others I attended the same chuch as he and his family. In norfolk virginia and i was a teenager and i would always look forward to hearing admiral barry black preach I now live in Johnson city, TN and we would love to have admiral barry black come visit us. So if you see this Dr. Black please write back. The Adams family.
Esqmooth, For your information, their are two different chaplains for both houses. For the senate it is him , and for the congress the chaplain is a catholic priest. We respect your point view about religion and politics, but please get your facts straitght before making such misleading comments.
As sincere as this guy is, prayer/religion/bible study, especially limited to 1 religion, should not be allowed in the Senate. When will we enforce the Constitution? Separation of Church & State should start w/religion, even if this guy is not associated w/ a particular Church. If one doesn't think this guy influences legislation even unintentionally, then that person is looking the other way. No decisions or legislation should be influenced by a senator's "spirituality". Reason over religion!!
He is a Seventh Day Adventist you tool. Isn't that scary enough? Counciling senators & conressmnan? That just ain't right. What bullshit. If they need God get the it the fuck out of where they work. What else do we know about him? This isn't about him, There should be no religion with 5 miles of DC. Religion corrupts as much as power. You gotta chaplain where you work? If so, it is a bad idea. If not, good on ya. Stay away from that shit. All of it is garbage,Two words: Christopher Hitchens.
I thought you were going to actually say something smart with facts and good reasoning... but you seem like an atheist and I don't have anything against them, but an atheist who tries to destroy religion should be a problem. He is a good man, he came to my school and talked to us for about an hour, he's not converting the senate into his religion, he's like an advisor and teaches them how to be good people in general not adventists.
The principle whether it is in the Constitution or any American document is that religion should not be anywhere near the govt. or people in Washington who we elected. IF A SENATOR HAS TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO BE A GOOD PERSON AFTER HE HAS BEEN VOTED IN, THEN WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DOING? Are we voting in teenagers who have just discovered pot? I don't care if he's a nice guy. If you think his 7th day stuff doesn't leak into his counseling you're not being rational. I'm glad he's a nice guy. hooray!
"The aspect of his job the public gets to see is his opening prayer in the Senate everyday. Chaplain Black said he tries to be sensitive to the heterogeneity of the audience that is listening to me. However, he admits, Some times I will end my prayers in the name of Jesus. yeah what's wrong with Christianity?
Read Christopher Hitchens and he will tell what the hell is wrong with Christianity. Listen to me I was Episcopal then Catholic then a once a year Catholic; Good Friday, I didn't like Hitchens but the fact is there is no god and you must rely on your own bad self and your own morals and behavior. Barry Black ain't goona shape up one bad congressman. Seriously, I read Hitchens because he was a jerk but a smart jerk. A polemical style i now enjoy
LOL... Christopher Hitchens a jerk already explains a lot... how smart can a jerk be to put up against millions of Christians, ask yourself. I'm an orthodox Christian myself, I can't defend any protestant religions because I don't agree about how they interpret things. But telling me there is no God? and about Barry Black it's not his fault that congressman need a guy like him, because if they didn't, they wouldn't have a chaplain.
You missed my point. I disagreed w/Hitchens' style on TV a long time ago, so I educated myself. Have you read any Hitchens books? I'm an expert on Hitchens as much as anybody who has read his articles & many of his books. I've met him, spoken w/him & I've listened to countless debates he has had w/very smart Christians. Near geniuses. He destroys them all. I listen carefully to BOTH sides. BTW, when I met him he was hardly a jerk. He listened well, was quite cordial, respectable & respectful.
Your ignorant and you dont even make sense. The founding fathers of this country made it possible for Admiral Barry Black to be chaplain to the United States Senate. He is a better man than you ever could be i knew him and his family personally and i am a seventh day adventist as well and you dont know the first thing about being religous in the first place look at the way you talk. Ingnorance! Your the tool and need to be prayed for!!
@eqsmooth -Why is that scary? What do we know about Black? Good grief, his life has been an open book & there have been plenty of magazine articles, tv interviews, and witnesses that testified to his life. He's not hypocritical and openly talks about his faults. Chris Hitchens, has said a lot of opinions regarding his own beliefs and views, which took a very hard-nosed dive after his mother and her lover both committed suicide back in the day. Hitchens has been very angry & bitter for years
There has never been a non-Christian Senate Chaplain, that's how! For Barry C. Black to be paid with my tax money is a grave affront to our democracy, a violation of the separation of Church and State.
" Black states that his position is comparable to being a pastor at a Church with 7,000 members, counting Senators and their staffs and families. When non-Christian senators and staff members are in need of chaplaincy, Black brings in other clergy. He says Its an opportunity of facilitate their religious needs without actually participating.
@eqsmooth I understand your point of separation of church and state, but that does not mean that a senator/gov't worker cannot be religious or ask peoples about religion. The point when it is going too far, is if he went to senators/reps to introduce bills, etc. that require others to believe their religion. Everytime he is asked for advice, he does not tell them to enforce religious doctrines, etc., he only helps them to come to a conclusion by reasons they already know.
(continued) Just because he is religious, it doesn't mean that he has say over bills, legal discussions, etc. He respects separation of church and state and he never steps over the line. He is there to help those who want it with spirituality, not law discussions.

In my opinion there should not be a chaplain for a legislative chamber. It's bordering on violation of the separation of church and state.
