..it's called getting old!!!...you get tired..you lose your teeth, your voice, your health goes down...your memory collapses..you lose your sight...you age..you retire..you die and go into eternity!
kingofpunk177, I agree to some of the things you say. Especially the way he dresses now adays, but "You never listen to word that I said, You only seen me
For the clothes that I wear" so...let's not be to harsh on him! Guess nobody can stand against time, not even Lydon himself. He has mellowed out a bit, but he'll never be an ordinary bloke! :)
lmao Lydon is not dead i saw public image limited perform on late night with jimmy fallon two nights ago, and yes it was Lydon singing, you people really shouldnt listen to shitty fucking rumors like that lmao its pathetic
Ah - just trying to picture how the teatime audience 30 years ago would have reacted to this on TOTP sandwiched between Abba and Shakin Stevens ! Love it.
Imagine how 'out there' and disturbing (to parents anyway) this must of looked and sounded for a lot tea time TV viewiers in 1979. Even more so in 2010 it would confuse and bewielder the majority (ie the plebs) what with the charts being the safe, stale, generic guff they are nowadays.
John wrote this song about his mothers lingering death from cancer - he was only 20 -21 years old. He wrote it for her at her request. She heard it and loved it !! Difficult song for him to play now - maybe even more difficult then all those years ago.
Never knew this got on TOTP - great! It's a lot like "Mushroom" by Can who also got on TOTP just once. 70s was much more open to music I think than now.
Sad to say I can remember when this was on TOTP. At work the next day, a really tedious office job, all the ELO fans were saying how much they hated it!
Its such a shame John Lydon is dead. I used to rate his usual style of singing & as a dresser & performer. Pistols were smart & Pil 78-82 were even better & ahead of the game but when Levine left , He got smug & yes maybe Rise & those Mid 90's Pistols shows were good, but can anyone tell me what he has done of any serious quality since 1986??? He's fat ,arrogant, forgets his words at gigs, dress shit, lost the once amazing "Rotten" vocal for this Larry the Lamb wine. Reality shows & Butter ads??
You will have to read my original comment again. Lydon is still alive but as a truly exciting performer he is dead. This 1979 performance is excellent.
When it comes to reunion tours it depends if the ethuisams there or not. Killing Joke 2008 was smart as indeed Radio Birdman & Eddie & the Hot Rods are still worth seeing but I saw the Damned & SLF not so long ago & they have lost it along with Lydon. Sort of pucnh drunk.
It could be argued that between 1978-81 Pil were even better than the Pistols. This particular track still sounds modern now! It really saddens me that Lydon does not care anymore his age has nothing to do with it , it's his attitude. The singing style changed sometime around 1982 for the worse. He is like the Oliver Reed of the music world.....in other words had the potential to be the greatest thing in music since Hendrix but he fucked it.
@tstsullivan797 Hello I have left various reasons on this site why I think Lydon as lost it as a performer, but I have to confess I did go & see PiL at the Electric Ballroom 2009 to give him one more chance. Well the band the good but he was the weakest link
@kingofpunk1977 the point of being mr. rotten is that HE CAN AND WILL DO WHATEVER THE FUCK HE WANTS TO. if you dident have your head up your ass with al your labels the you would relize this.
@kingofpunk1977 generic 'punk' you are. Your name gives that away. Worry about your own llife. Lydon doesn't live for you to emulate. If he makes a living by doing a commercial for a product he likes, why not? It financed his current PIL tour. Anyway, quality is subjective. You 'punks' should know that. That term was made by the media anyway, you sell out. :)
@kingofpunk1977 Couldn`t agree more. I loved this man especially when he swerved "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle". Those butter adverts ! Oh and you forgot to mention his time in the jungle. I thought that was a chance to redeem himself but what a wanker he turned out to be. A real spoilt bratt who liked getting his own way.
@lnc0 Log on to any Pil performance 2009/2010 or Pistols 2007/2010 to hear this annoying "Larry the lamb" style vocal regardless of any adverts. I like John Lydon very much but I think he is very much resting on his laurels at the moment
@kingofpunk1977 Maybe if his mother died again he would write another song like this. Or maybe not, because the first time is bound to affect you more.
@HeadlandRoad No one has to die? I just want Lydon to stop getting drunk using it as a crutch & put some bloody effort in 2011. Ok he wrote 2 of the best albums ever but its all about now!
Blah blah blah. Up to that point he'd been producing music, lyrics and gigs of a very high standard for 11(eleven) years. How many artists can you name have done that AND done it while being hassled by the police in their own home and attacked in the street by "monarchists"
"Butter ads"
He's STILL the most honest and decent rock star in an industry that mainly produces puppets and monosyllabic bores. Only Lennon is his equal
@H4rryF Well if your pushing me on musical people who get harassed by the police in time the Rolling Stones Hawkwind Crass The Levellers Prodogy Fun da Mental etc . Listen mate I have followed John Lydon s career since Dec 1976 (LWT show Janet Street Porter I was 9) & when I was old enough 12 (stopped playing with toys got pocket money etc) I bought Pistols/Pil records back catalogue during 1979 & you are right he is still a very interesting person but from 1986 musically there has been nothing
@kingofpunk1977 " I have followed John Lydon s career since Dec 1976"
So have i, sonny. He was a sewage worker with.menigitis that gave him epilepsy, bad eyesight and teeth and wiped his memory. Now he's a worldwide hero. Pick on Westlife or some other faceless fucking band who really deserve it. He is one of the few people that makes me proud to be British. To quote his reply to a journalist who questioned his credibility,"When you have achieved as much as I have, come back and talk to me,"
@H4rryF If we are going to get into Lydon quotes "I don't have any heroes there all useless". Julian Cope has been fairly consistent and Bowies quota has been very good musically but 1986 to 2011 is a very long time and John has not delivered. I want to be proved wrong. I understand PiL are making an album now & lets hope it can be as good as Commercial Zone/Metal Box etc The very point of Lydons personality was to question the audience to challenge them make them not accept any old thing
Excellent clip, even moreso considering it's from TOTP! Can you imagine Jools Holland inviting this kind of (fantastic) racket onto Later With...? Of course not... x
Jah Wobble actually had the TOTPs make-up people black out his teeth so he could do a big smile when the camera was on him.
