1981? 0.o Has anyone seen Mary Steenburgen out in the daylight? The lady doesn't age! She is gorgeous and could pass for Jaclyn Smith sister as today they look very much alike. Both classy, beautiful & youthful.
From the mists of memory.... I do believe Kris Kristofferson was supposed to present with Diana. He had to drop out when the show was postponed a day because of the assasination attempt on President Reagan (Kris was shooting ROLLOVER in NYC with Jane Fonda). Non-nominated Donald graciously stepped in. What a gent! As the only principle cast member not nominated for OP, he was the only actor who really could have given DeNiro competition for top award. And still has never gotten a nod.
Hey she´s still acting and is pretty relevant today unlike those other nominees but I like the look on Moriarty´s face - thank god I didn´t win. Hahahah
Cathy Moriarty gave the best female performance in a Scorsese film hands down. So real and so able to hold her own De Niro at his peak! She's incredible!
@JOJO22858 no this wasnt a terrible injustice as u may think, best supporting actress is the most notorious category in the oscars and marisa tomei's win for my cousin vinny was far worse
@deanriam I miss Cathy Moriarty because her acting appearances have been very infrequent over the past ten years. I should have said I miss her appearances terribly, lol.
I think that this was a pretty weak field. Eileen Brennan should have won IMO. But I would have preferred if Mary Tyler Moore was nominated here, then she would have won hands down. Bad campaigning. And they campaigned Timothy Hutton leading. Perplexing!
Cathy Moriarty is an awesome actress; I miss her terribly. Diana Scarwid is a BRILLIANT character actress (hers and Gary Sinise's portrayal of the Truman's in 1995's "Truman" were spectacular).
I'm not familiar with LeGalienne's work, and I never quite understood the appeal with Steenburgen, (but I didn't see the film, in all fairness), though i like the outfit. Brennan is a hoot, and is very dynamic/diverse in her roles.
Oh, and Donald Sutherland looks quite dashing here, also. :)
@withrowag I much prefer Mary Steenburgen in Melvin and Howard than Cathy Moriarthy in Raging Bull, but that year was particularly strong for this category.
mary steenburgen is still gorgeous!!!

I liked her speech. You can tell Moriarty really wanted it by how hard she tried to look like she didn't care.

This was one of the Biggest Blunders in Oscar history!! Eileen Brennan was so much
funnier in her hysterical performance in "Private Benjamin" than Steemburger was
in "Howard." Eileen Brennan delivered one of the BEST comedic performances of
all time in that movie. She deserved to win the Oscar HANDS DOWN!!

This was one of Oscar's BIGGEST BLUNDERS!! Eileen Brennan should have won
for her hilarious performance in "Private Benjamin" which I think is still one of the
all-time BEST comedic performances ever recorded. She was much more deserving
of this Oscar than Steenburger.

Why did they cut away to Duvall when she was talking about Malcolm McDowell?
jh193187 11 months ago
@jh193187 I think the line producer got his cameras mixed up and they cut to the camera fixed on Duvall instead of McDowell.

Hard to believe Cathy Moriarty was 19 or 20 at the time. Very deserved, although all five nominees gave the performances of their lives on this one.
