They sacrificed their lives, their futures ... lost loves and families of children's children never born to know the freedom they died for ... we will remember ...
@Napoleon501ste Although my knowledge of WW! is limited I'm aware that extreme European nationalism and mishandling the events before the war by their leaders was the prime cause of that horrible war. They were the cause of sending their innocent men and women to be the fuel of that conflagration. Therefore their near and dear ones are right in commemorating their memory in all generations, so should the world at large.
We should not lie to our self. The soldiers that died, died for nothing. Germans, Belgians, Brits, Canadians, Americans and all the other nationalities that fought there. Like most wars, this was a war based on the greed a few men. We must learn from our mistakes and never, ever follow these fools in war again. It is sad that they died, they were the victims of the system, made heroes to glorify the system that cause there death.
@thebaldybishop No disgrace at all. I just don't see the need to glorify war when remembering these death. They died in a bad place for a bad reason. That makes there death very sad and we should remember them so that not more people have to die like that. If I would say the same thing about people who died in the concentration camps would you call that disgrace?
@thebaldybishop It sounds cold but that does not make it untrue, the truth is not pretty. And I don't know about the other countries but I know that in Belgium you had to fight, and deserters were shot. How is sending these boys to run towards machine guns any different from sending Jews in gas chambers. They died for nothing in a war could have been avoided if Europe wouldn't have been so driven by extreme nationalism.
@Napoleon501ste Very true.. it was an egotistical war.. Childish behaviour from Governments. Yet humanity will never change.. We all feel obliged to seek our own justice and show of force when wronged.. It's in our nature as men.
Nov. 11, 2011...................I listen to this every Veteran's Day...and even days in-between. It brings tears each time. My granddaughter's school choir sang it and I could not stop the tears then.........and now as I listen.
What a surprise! This is from a recording my high school jazz choir did many years ago. I always loved this arrangement, and I'm happy to see that many others do too. Thank you for making it part of such a beautiful tribute.
So strong is our ability to fight, and yet so weak is our ability to love. We should use our time loving each other, not being creative in finding new ways to kill ourselves.
Lest we forget those who died for the freedom of our country, and paid the ultimate price for it.
@muckychimney : Don't think we will ever forget what people like you're grandfather did for us in Belgium/Flanders. We are still very greatfull. Greetings from Flanders...
RIP Private James. My great great grandfather. I cannot even begin to imagine the fear and terror of war. I have deep deep respect for you and your friends and the soldiers ALL over the world. RIP All fallen soldiers
I was (and hopefully will be again, next year) a member of a choir who sang this exact same arrangement of "In Flanders Fields" every November 11th at the Cenotaph in Downtown Vancouver BC as part of the city's Remembrance Day ceremonies, and this is one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I have ever had the pleasure of singing. Lest We Forget
@Icantafford Very well, if I get the point wrong then half the people here do (those patriotic drumbeaters). In the case of which I haved a valid point to make.
At my school someone always starts the 11th day off with reading this poem.....and then we watch the video (Pittance Of Time by Terry Kelly) but even tho we dont speak for 2min i dont talk for the whole day and tend to keep to myself....my friends get really mad :(
It is truely amazing how many people here actually seem to believe that the Allies of WWI were fighting for freedom and democracy against an evil enemy. Don't they know any better or are they looking for cozy comfort in the blissful ignorance of the majority?
@jensww22 I beleive your missing the point of this poem. It's not about what ideal the soldiers were fighting and dying for. It's about the hardships of the soldier in the trenches and the death they were all exposed to on a scale uncomprehensible to the average person and extreme even to todays hardened soldiers.
Lest we forget the men and women who have given the greatest sacrifice for this country. They laid down their lives for our freedom. We shall never forget those who pay the ultimate sacrifice. So please during this Memorial weekend take the time out of your partying to thank those who served and those who have fallen.. We thank you men and women of the Armed Forces.
And this the year 2011... Lest We forget... Flags and flowers in devoted array A loving tribute this Memorial Day This moment this day and so a pause To honor those who lived a cause With valor and sacrifice life they gave And embraced the call yet to be brave Answered they did to liberty's plea That freedom be held for a you, a me Memory of each life gone never to fade Live we life's blessings for sacrifice made. In loving gratitude. Rose Marie Raccioppi Poet Laureate Orangetown, New York

No one likes war except maniacs. But a true hero knows that if there is one, he(or she) will do everything in his/her power to do what is right. Also, it's "Heroes," Hero's means that something belongs to a Hero.
Incredibly beautiful. As soon as it started it made me think of both my grandfathers (talk about waterworks!). I remember the only time I ever saw grandpa cry was when I was very little and someone had asked him to relate what his experience in WW2 was like. Once he started remembering his buddies that didn't make it he couldn't continue. May we never forget their sacrifices.

sum1 has to come in here and b a kunt dont they, umm i dunno? hitlers plan for world domination? nazism? racism? japans attempt to take hold of my country? freedom? u can get fukd kunt
That someone that you call 'cunt' is from Flanders..
Oh and btw, grab a history book will ya. WOI has absolutely nothing to do with nazism, racism, or japan, not even freedom was at stake... It was a purely economic war, unlike WOII, displayed in all it's senselessness. That's what this video is about, that's what the poem is about.
It surely ain't about people going round yelling 'cunt' at each other :D
Thouse in power take us to war sean1980 but its the comman man who suffers on the battlefield ,remmberance day is not about why we went to war but to remmber our fallen who gave the ultimate sacrfice so we could have the freedom we have today.
@manfrommars340 And then a whole set of Alliances and Treaties were put into motion and all of Europe was engulfed in Flames. Its a shame really, only a few years before they were all fighting together against the Chinese...
@manfrommars340 It is actually economics, but nationalism as well. All European powers (not just the so called enemy) had dreams of a new dominant role in Europe. One way was by making alliances with other nations. The other way was by expantion drift (colonies). In those days colonies were seen as an unconditional access to all kind of resources and sort of proof that you were a world power. However, there was not much left in the world to be taken as a colony...
@manfrommars340 (continued) Most powers were therefore not against a war that would redraw the map. And by all those alliances and pacts the cake would be divided amongst the victorious. Nobody believed the war would last long anyway, looking back at previous wars. But they forgot the advance of the new technologies. The assassination of Frans Ferdinand was just the trigger that they needed. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia although Serbia agreed with 9 out of 10 topics of the ultimatum...
@manfrommars340 (continued 2) Russia (pact with Serbia) came to help Serbia. Germany (pact with Austria-Hungary) came to help Austria-Hungary. And the chain reaction went on and on. That's the start of WW1 in a nutshell. So yes, it's actually economics.
@skbdfkrew - Remembering here as well, in the Eastern USA. Also remembering with undying gratitude our Aussie brothers and sisters who have fought so bravely beside us for so many years. May peace prevail....
lol I keep seeing "why are there pictures of WWII" The answer seems pretty simple: This songs commemorates the dead of *all* wars now. While it was originally composed *during* WWI it no longer only represents that war. It's a song for all wars.
so many of these clips say one thing but have a few other photos slip in lol. im sure flanders had the d-day landing at the same time. but stil, amazing how many photos actualy got takens back then.
I am not a fan of the British, but I have to admit that tens of thousands of young men from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand (as well as the USA) have risked their lives or their limb fighting tyranny. When Hitler wanted to eradicate the national sovereignty of Poland and others by creating a large nation out of many different countries the British said no.
I hate to say it, but the fact that the British inflicted Nazi Germany's first ever military defeat is incredible.
Ypres was just a conflict, In Flanders Field was taken and its the song that EVERY Canadian knows to show love to soldiers.... Im assuming your from America... If so! I ask you... Where were your men in 1939
Shame on you.... I'm dutch and without the american hero's who crossed a continent to die for our freedom we would all be speaking German... shame on you, respect those who deserve respect.
I respect them for comming to help us the troops that is not there goverment ,us british were fighting the war single handed for years and allmost lost the war if we had not won the battle of britain germany would of invaded ,lets face the fact america joined after japan bombed them not because they came to there allies help, but i respect them american lads that fought and died to give us what we have today god bless our boys overseas in afgan come home safe british and american,
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.
No Australians ever died in a war. Only AMERICA! You all are too worried bout ut brits acsents and sun tans! America withs wars with god and god alone!
i think u may have sunstroke or something wrong with u, Australia has been there and done its bit as has every other country that has fought. If u think that america is the only one that wins think again, read a book called The Great War and see how good ur americans were and just so u know it was written by a yank also. (they failed by the way)
the battle of the somme was remembered tonight (1/7/09) in Northern Ireland... its called the mini 12th... all those Irish men who volunteered to fight in both the Great War and WWII are remembered.... men from both sides of the divide fought together...and died together... we are still losing volunteers in afghanistan... young men and women who think of others before themselves... your sacrifice is appreciated... lest we forget... N.Ire certainly hasn''t
Thankyou for uploading this. It takes a big toll on my emotional side. How can we be so selfish? when this and WW2 happened? I'm crying, at what happened, if you think about it seriously, it is utterly unexplainable how I feel.
I did this last year at a cathedral service on rememberance day. My schools choir. I was on serprano...its really hard and tbh we were no where near as good as this one because this is so heartfelt and pure... most of our choir has chavs in it so it was oookkkk but not at all like this one.
Its about the wars fought in flanders fields.. look it up and research it. My chorus sung this song and we got a history lesson on it. Though, this verison isn't the best, its still pretty.
Thank you for the respectful, moving video of this great poem. My mother use to quote it to me. She had to memorize it in grade school in the 1920's. She passed on April 1, 2009. I searched the internet for Flander's Field and found yours first. She was from the WWII generation and the greatest. We are losing them minute by minute. I miss them dearly.
God bless the men and women of all nations who fight for Liberty and Democracy against our common foes, the forces of statism, bigotry and religious (particularly Islamic) fundamentalism.
I know the words are Lt-Col John McCrae's beautiful poem, but do you know who arranged and sang the music? It is both beautiful and eerie.
Uhm, because the poem/song is "In Flanders Fields"?
And the idea of the poem is universal to all fighting men and women, though this is from WW1, don't you think anyone who laid down his life for an ideal would agree with the message of these few words?
Excellent. I only wish my life could mean as much as the Allied Forces who gave their lives. My family is from the Netherlands, so I have nothing but respect for our forces.

May we never forget their sacrifices.

skbdfkrew 2 years ago
That someone that you call 'cunt' is from Flanders..
Oh and btw, grab a history book will ya. WOI has absolutely nothing to do with nazism, racism, or japan, not even freedom was at stake... It was a purely economic war, unlike WOII, displayed in all it's senselessness. That's what this video is about, that's what the poem is about.
It surely ain't about people going round yelling 'cunt' at each other :D

Thouse in power take us to war sean1980 but its the comman man who suffers on the battlefield ,remmberance day is not about why we went to war but to remmber our fallen who gave the ultimate sacrfice so we could have the freedom we have today.

ww1 was actually not for economy
it was fought because the austria-hungary next in line for the throne was assasinated
manfrommars340 2 years ago
@manfrommars340 And then a whole set of Alliances and Treaties were put into motion and all of Europe was engulfed in Flames. Its a shame really, only a few years before they were all fighting together against the Chinese...
russellrush101 2 years ago
@manfrommars340 It is actually economics, but nationalism as well. All European powers (not just the so called enemy) had dreams of a new dominant role in Europe. One way was by making alliances with other nations. The other way was by expantion drift (colonies). In those days colonies were seen as an unconditional access to all kind of resources and sort of proof that you were a world power. However, there was not much left in the world to be taken as a colony...
jayhellcat 1 year ago
@manfrommars340 (continued) Most powers were therefore not against a war that would redraw the map. And by all those alliances and pacts the cake would be divided amongst the victorious. Nobody believed the war would last long anyway, looking back at previous wars. But they forgot the advance of the new technologies. The assassination of Frans Ferdinand was just the trigger that they needed. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia although Serbia agreed with 9 out of 10 topics of the ultimatum...
jayhellcat 1 year ago
@manfrommars340 (continued 2) Russia (pact with Serbia) came to help Serbia. Germany (pact with Austria-Hungary) came to help Austria-Hungary. And the chain reaction went on and on. That's the start of WW1 in a nutshell. So yes, it's actually economics.
Greetings from Flanders.

lol I keep seeing "why are there pictures of WWII" The answer seems pretty simple: This songs commemorates the dead of *all* wars now. While it was originally composed *during* WWI it no longer only represents that war. It's a song for all wars.

Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

i think u may have sunstroke or something wrong with u, Australia has been there and done its bit as has every other country that has fought.

R.I.P and God rest all those that died for us.

It's impressive - but why call it 'In Flanders Fields'? Many images are from world war 2...
robirana 2 years ago 2
Uhm, because the poem/song is "In Flanders Fields"?
And the idea of the poem is universal to all fighting men and women, though this is from WW1, don't you think anyone who laid down his life for an ideal would agree with the message of these few words?
trublgrl 2 years ago
Yes of course - I'll go with that. The sentiments are certainly well put.
