the first one, is interesting to me. Just the way they showed things. I am no way racist, I'm sure my best friend (who is coloured) could put her veiw on it :)
@Mschampagnekiss I don't think they necessary tried to make it "racist". There were servants of many different backgrounds back then...even the white angels are servants here, preparing the centaurs as well...
@KatiKosta At that time, yes there was black slaves but in the 21st century, given the history of black people, it isn't appropriate. That's why they took it out. And yes I am aware that there is white "slaves" as well. They still have the 2 other black girls in there but their bodies and appearance are a lot more feminine and they were not cut out or removed from the film, only Sunflower.
@Mschampagnekiss Yes, there was made in the 20th century, put this cartoon takes places in a time 'thousands of years ago" or whatever. I'm aware this is the 21st century currently, but we cannot ignore the face that people of different race/culture were slaves/servants to other people of different race/culture. Imagine if we cut out the scenes with the black servants in Gone With The Wind...The film would not be right just cause some found it 'extremely racist'. That was just society back then.
@Mschampagnekiss And Sunflower? She is a little girl. And of course she doesn't have the appearance as the other two centaurs - because they are women, with woman bodies. Sunflower has braids, like a child would. Why, because she has larger lips? So what? Some blacks have larger lips than others. i don't see it as a negative, 'racist' quality. I mean, some Jews and Greeks have large noses, some Brazilians have more defined hips, Asians have almond shapes eyes...Different people, different looks
@KatiKosta Alright you asked why they took her out of the film and I told you why. I also didn't mention anything about her lips but clearly you know a lot of black people, such as myself, have larger lips than white people. This is a childrens movie and yes black slaves are apart of our history but innocent children don't need to see this. Why do you think they took it out of the movie in the first place hun? This isn't a proud part of the worlds history that should be seen at such a young age.
@Mschampagnekiss Hun, I'm black too...I'm just saying there wasn't an urgent need to take it out...This film is a classic and I've watched it my entire childhood...I guess this bothers/offends some people more than others...
@KatiKosta It does bother some more than others and you've watched it your entire childhood without seeing sunflower in it which I believe is for the best. Once again, you asked why it was taken out and I told you why. I wasn't the one who took it out of the film, if you have an issue complain to Disney and maybe they will release the original Fantasia with the black slave. Then lets see how the rest of the world reacts. And urgent? this is the 60th anniversary edition.
@Mschampagnekiss I just don't see how the world would 'react' over a little girl with angel babies preparing centaurs...Do people react with Gone With The Wind with Sissy? Did they cut out every Mammy and Sissy scene in the film? No, because it is a classic
@KatiKosta This type of imagery is no longer accepted this day in age. People don't look back at these movies and wish there was more movies made today with black slaves. Sure, that movie is a classic but im talking about Fantasia.Trust me, the world would react if they were still selling the movie with Sunflower in it. It might have been made in the 20th century but we're viewing it in the 21st century. I don't understand your argument here. How is this appropriate for children? It's racist.
@KatiKosta I'm not insecure about it. You don't even know what you're saying and you're not listening to what I'm saying. Do you want these images back in the classic Disney movies? They're sickening and painful for people to watch. Black people have died and you're telling me I'm being insecure? Have you no shame? Do you know what blacks went through? Brush up on your history and stop being so ignorant. THIS IS A CHILDREN'S MOVIE!
im glad tht classic disney blends real art into their creations, but does any girl out there feel disturbed when they see topless girls in the beginning? but i guess it's nice to see how this was normal and innocent back then. unlike if we were to how this today pplz wud wud b ranting about how inappropriate it is. especially parents
@afrivan03 I don't know why but old fairytales are always disturbing, little red riding hood grandma's is eaten by a wolf, rappunzel is kidnapped in a tower since she was a girl, the queen of hearts cuts everybody's head, snowwhite is buried alive and somehow disney classical movies reflect that in the worst and most disturbing way as possible and somehow they are considered great movies for kids.
the cut out parts of this is so unforgivable. however, some of those centaurs have some pretty dark skin on them, which is nice because it gives the scenes some diversity.
idk even for its time the black centaur girl seems a pretty damn random and misplaced O_o still a nice scene but seriously wtf and the editing is terrible : /
Don't forget that the "Original Theatrical Version" you have sourced from is actually just a Laser Disc copy of the film, is not representative of the original version of the film. Both copies of the film is this video are in a CYMK colour timing, whereas the original was in an RGB colour timing :)
the original theatrical version is not integrated on the american & german Laser Disc. I have both of them. If you know a data source for the original version, you can tell it to me. ;)
I think the newer version fits better. First off, makes Dionysus (they call him Bacus even though that's the roman name. ) look a hell of a lot more drunk. second I don't feel that the slave really fits in (Yes there are black slave girls with dionysus but that's more like his harum, and not really slaves and yes I realize how sexist that sounds. but that's just my opinion.
Thanks for the upload.. this is exactly what I was looking for!
Disney puts a lot of thought into what the public thinks about them, so it was removed. I'm pretty sure that if they decided to leave it tho, People would understand. Also, the part where they zoomed in to edit it, that was terrible!
Ja, ja. Disney und sein späteres Saubermann Image. Da war in den 60ern eine dunkelhäutige Dienerin mit dazu auch noch äußerst stereotypischem Aussehen nicht mehr "politisch korrekt".

When did they get rid of the black centaur girl? I've had this film on VHS as a kid in the 90s, I don't remember it?

@KatiKosta Disney took it out because it's extremely racist; she represents a black slave.
