I was working as a runner in 2000 when I came across some reels of film labeled 'Dark Blood' in the basement of a production company in Soho. I didn't at the time know the title so I asked around at the office and I was told about the sad and tragic tale of River Phoenix and this abandoned film...

Judy Davis had no trouble with River, that is Sluizer's fabrication. The argument was between George and Judy, not Judy and River. There's an article describing River kissing Judy's feet. - that doesn't sound like a bad relationship to me. Judy has also said she was concerned about River because George's direction was vague and he kept pressuring him to be more kabuki and over the top.

@AdArmand I, too, think the conflict was a professional one, between Davis and The Director; although, she may have taken-out her frustrations on her young co-star. I think she thought of River as a kid, considered some of his behavior to be "antics" and wasn't protective of him during the shoot, focusing more on challenging the director. Phoenix was a likeable darling. I think he wasn't used to people not...liking him - or, at least, attempting to be nice to him. His death was just unexpected.

@mollyvital She was really rude to everyone on the set. She made filming hard on them all with her attitude and would not even acknowledge River when they weren't filming. I've heard she was like that with everyone. He-River-admired her and partly wanted to do this movie so he could work with her. It hurt him a lot. She was just hard for them to work with. He didn't like the way she treated everyone.
