Very nice - both listening + viewing pleasure !! Every player here makes it look so damn E-A-S-Y .. especially Shad on fiddle & Noam on banjo. And the fact that it's actually NOT EASY at all to do this so well, in reality .. signifies their skill & talent as musicians of repute !! Great posting, thank you backporchpicker.
Noam is a very talented musician... but it sure would have been nice if he had hit the melody of the song at least one time thru before going on to the hotlicks. What is it with all these hotshot jazz banjo pickers?? I'm just a good old boy bluegrass banjo picker, and I know that you play the melody at least once before taking off for the twilight zone. I did have fun with this video though... I perfected my break to the song playing along with it. Thanks guys!
@FlyingTiger64 No offense, but you come across as a little arrogant. Like Noam doesn't know how to play the melody, serously? I mean, John Cowan doesn't qualify as traditional "bluegrass." He may play tunes usually played in bluegrass settings, but he and his band are very "hotshot jazz" players. Since Noam and John are both very progressive guys, I see no problem with the jazz mindset.
I will never inderstand why bluegrass musicians think their way is the only way.
@TheBibleWitness I'm glad you like Noam's solo. I take it back - he did play the melody for the first half of the A part. He's obviously a very talented musician, and I enjoyed his creativity. Man, I wish I could play half that stuff he did! It comes down to a matter of context and taste. Considering the song, it just seemed like he was looking to show off more than actually giving a good rendition of that beautiful melody. Sorry you disagree.
Wow!! What a sound! Eventhough the tune originated in Canada, this band embodies that chique charming Good Ol' Southern Swing! Not just great individual players, but also outstanding collective band-musicianship!
(oh and just for splitting hairs and because I feel like it, mongorich: it's actually written rigor mortis, as in two words and not one. This is because it is latin and it actually means stiffness of death, hence the "is" which is the genitive form of the word "mors", death. At least I'm being a correct smartass. adios!)
Yes, it's bluegrass...when John Coltrane recorded my favorite things, it was still jazz, and as far as comparing /rating Shad vs. Michael Cleveland it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges, each is wonderful. Don't worry about who's best. You,re missing the point.
note this is not cape breton music this is metis music. dont get all huffy and disagree yet. metis music and cape breton music are similar.this is michif music cause it orginated in st annes manitoba thats y it got its name.but cape breton music is similar that people often get confused with it with metis music
Shad is awfully good (I've seen him play live five times: twice with Mike Snider, twice with John Cowan, and once with David Grier) but I don't think he's in the same league as Michael Cleveland. Michael Cleveland is a freak of nature, one of those where your jaw drops and you just go "Wow!"
I LOVE YOU SHAD COBB!

are Shad and Jesse brothers?
biglipdfool 2 years ago
Yes! When they were in their teens they were in a bluegrass band with their other brothers! They made a wonderful project called, "Time Machine"
I believe they should re-release it!
