My big strong dog taught me how to Telemark ski by standing on my ski tails while I was trying to ski. He could jump into the back of my Ford F150 when he was 10 months old without lowering the tailgate. He is more athletic than you or me, so he knows more about it than you probably do. If you do not agree, I invite you to jump into the back of my F150 without lowering the tailgate. If you can't do it, maybe my dog could teach you....like he could help you with your Telemark turns.
WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! This is how PSIA is ruining the telemark turn. Do not take a lesson from this guy. He is teaching tele-fakie - it is an alpine turn with a heel lift. This is not a true telemark turn. I agree with haugan3 - "You are wrong! At 02:16 you say that it isnt the telemark movement that does the turn..." COMPLETELY WRON!!
You are wrong! At 02:16 you say that it isnt the telemark movement that does the turn... That is because you do an alpine turn before you do the telemark movement. You actually do it wrong! Trust me i know how to do this!
I have actually teled for about 15 years and unfortunately it is much harder on my knees than Alpine. FYI-I'm 35. However, I take some ibuprofen and continue on.
@DenverTide im an alpiner and i tried tele this year, i had an acl reconstruction two years ago so im very carefull with that leg, i have no trouble with it in alpine exept for minor soreness and swelling, tele was going to tear my knee apart in a week lol, it sure is a blast though
Does anyone think it is unreasonable to make a beginning snowboarder learn telemark skiing in two lessons then have to go into the backcountry on a hut trip? Might he pick up this sport on his second lesson because he didn't on the first one.): but it's not a choice.
He's got some good points here. But if you're a GOOD skier and if you know how to use a ski, you'll catch on. Granted, It will take you a while until you can do the same stuff on tele as you did on alpine, but then you can do much more/different things. Especially in powder.
Get ready to do some climbing for the complete telemark experience. There's no good incentive to try much climbing with locked heels. The feet easily get torn up from stiff alpine boots.
With telemark skiing the runs will open up to you. You can consider going up a run instead of always going down.

Here's a tip... at 3:49 - Keep your upper body still and facing down the hill in the turn.

Think of the old legends from Telemark who actually did this on skis made of wood. That was impressive. =)
Don't get me wrong though, this is also impressive. Just wanted to make a point. =)

I would like to try, I do Alpine ski and Telemark looks easy on your knees, it is something I would appreciate in this sport.
