is the geometry going to be quad or triangle? By the way, if anyone wants to make $ with your 3d models check out cgworld(dot)com. You get an instant payment from your buyers.
It is possible to create 3D face from a number of photos automatically! Just use PhotoScan (agisoft.ru/products/photoscan/). You can also export you model in a number of standard formats.
@ShenaFilms [solarnavigator (.dot.) net/history/winston_churchill (.dot.) htm ] there youl find that image. but anyway william howard taft doesnt even look like this!!! so i have no idea on why you think so.
If you are looking into 3d but feel you do not have the skills to make your own head, (car, dog etc etc) NEVER use a wizard like this, this is crap and your just cheating yourself out of experience. Get Zbrush and find some tutorials on sculpting, and retopo's in there FIRST. Any studio are artist worth mentioning will never use this in there workflow because it will only slow them down.
@enger123 well you're right. But, for example, i know 3d modelling and i can make a head in 3ds max or zbrush. And i can also have fun with this wizard. Of course, it's not for movie models but it's good for fun and it saves alot of hours of work. So i am interested in it even if i won't work with it. Sorry if i said something wrong(gramaticaly).
@enger123 Hey Enger, I have to disagree with that statement, at least partially. Zbrush is probably better (I'm not too familiar with either program) but also most likely more expensive. Nevertheless, even this program is infinitely faster at creating a good 3d model than doing it from scratch, which many artists still do. I've seen video footage of both programs and both seem good. Anyway, those are my thoughts =)
@Matsuemon13 No problem. You have to use these programs to understand how important it is to do it those ways, and if your talking price, blender is a program which is free / open source. The best modelers, (they work hard to get there) don't touch these because it would make things more difficult, those guys get jobs and are paid well.
@enger123 Your right this isn't for people learning 3d, but as I've witness first hand, major companies do use crappy software like this in low priority areas where the emphases is quantity (e.g crowds) as it only take 2 minutes to knock out a model.
@enger123 That kind of narrow-mindedness commenting is against the flow of technological progress. Sometimes a goal might not be about being an artist but about the research and exploration on the look of a character or any object. A phone is not the same as an in-person meeting, but that does not make them useless. Software that speeds up the process of modeling a face might not fit into the paradigm of being a worker bee, but it does show the radical leaps that technology is making.
@NoahHornberger I am sorry you feel that way; however, lets not compare apples to oranges. Second, the working bee would use this... 3rd, to get that detail (which is not much) you could push around a default head in zbrush and project the texture on probably quicker. Sir, have you worked with any 3d software yourself?
@enger123 At the core I just find it more fun to support and enjoy the new programs people are making instead of trying to promote a 3d-worldview. Yes, there are many ways to model a head. How can we say what tool will benefit or harm another person's project, unless if operating from a narrow set of assumptions motivated out of personal interests? What I learned at Pixar (for Wall-E) was that unconstrained creative exploration in all directions is what creates the things people love.
@NoahHornberger I must say, I have found some of your shading work and it is very impressive. :) I've been wanting to touche Renderman for a while now. I still must respectfully disagree though. I would like to explain my side a bit more though, there seems to be 2 kinds of people in the 3d world, 3d artists and programmers, both are very talented in there own ways. This seems like something a more programmer minded person would use for there personal project.
@enger123 While that be true (and I prefer 3d-coat to zbrush), this software demonstrated in the video seems to have given a very quick approximation/silhouette of the face you're aiming for, which could be imported to voxel/sculpting programs afterwards perhaps. While it is cheating, it is IMO a little faster.
Drawing the lines, that's sorta like cheating, isn't it? The program is still dependant on the human's vision abillities to process that picture. If it was good program it could determine where to draw the line by itself.
This is a lot of manual editing for only a faked 3D model! I accidentally discovered this company: Visualsize that can construct all kinds of 3D models - partial or complete - using photographs collected from random locations around a 3D object. They do real faces with the correct texture and structure from digital photographs - and there is no manual intervention at all! The technology of Visualsize is really cool and I haven't seen anything like it.
but what is the advantage of generating a 3d object with an image as texture if the shape is predefined?? Everyone has a different face and face shape; why hypothesize you could use one 3d object for 6 billions of different faces on earth...
With free facial recognition software that can work in real time (see Logitech and HP webcams) it seems odd to have to draw the facial features. The human brain can instantly recognize the features of the face, even sometimes seeing them in abstract/random textures on a wall, ceiling (or tortilla). This tech isn't perfect, but it should be used to start off with and then let the user refine the selection.
Facegen is another software that will also do this, but once your model is made, it also preserves your face texture, color, facial hair, and allows u to alter your facial expressions and phonemes (the way ur mouth moves when u talk). Then you can use it with lip syncing software or export it to games if u purchase the software. The free version (which doesn't expire) even allows you to save faces in the native FaceGen format. This looks pretty cool tho too, only facegen does it all for you.

Not the same thing...you won't be able to make your living on taking a photo and use this program to make a head out of it. Either learn to draw or learn how to model. Or both...this is a cheap shortcut. This is usedby people with no skill. If you are serious about 3D learn how to model yourself...
you can probably export to obj or 3ds format and import in blender. But this is just a cheap shortcut. If you want to get good in 3D you should model that face by yourself.
@grampaj0e it would be if you understood the software. you select several reference points, and it morphs the default model to match the picture, and it applies the texture for more realistic-ness,
I once photoed a friend and modled his fase in maya it turned out similarly nicely.. exept i never did anything about the eyes... so they where just creapy black sockets X3
depends if you like modelling proffesionally or not. use blender (or better software like 3ds max or cinema 4d) if you want to make your own, but this is better if you like to let a computer do it.
