As a Brightonian I feel ashamed that one of the world's greatest bands should come to my town and face such pitiful questions. Sonic Youth sound 60s? A few bands in the 60s experimented with discordance a little bit, but that was hardly the sound of the 60s. Maybe if SY used hammond organs and sitars it would almost be a sensible question.
One band in particular that's relatively obscure is Michael Yonkers Band...they recorded an album (Microminiature Love) in 1968 that was never released until recently that eerily foreshadows post punk and especially sonic youth's use of tuning.
I think they have a website, it's definitely worth checking out for any fan of punk history
We sound like Bad Company :)

What word that would be, like hard core or industrial? Those words are so lame next to rock.
